How Much Does It Cost Samsung To Put Together The Galaxy S8?

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus went on sale in some markets yesterday. The new flagships cost more than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge but those prices are justified. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus cost more to manufacture hence the reason for their high prices.

A report by IHS Markit has revealed the bill of materials of the 64GB Galaxy S8. It costs Samsung $307.50 to put together the 5.8-inch device. Of that amount, only $5.9 makes up manufacturing expenses. The rest is the cost of materials. That makes the Galaxy S8 $43.34 and $36.29 more expensive in terms of production than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S8 teardown

There is no breakdown of the cost of each individual component but the report says the 3000mAh battery costs $4.50 while the sum of the NAND flash memory and DRAM is $41.50.

You might wonder why Samsung is selling it for more than double the cost of production then. The cheapest price you can get the Galaxy S8 is $720 and that is a $412.50 difference.  To be fair to Samsung, they also have to bear the cost of shipping, marketing, and import taxes to destination countries. Retailers and carriers also get their cut and some is also set aside for research and development. There is also administrative costs which includes the salaries of executives and managers.

The HTC U Will Launch as The HTC U 11 and Will Come in Five Colors

HTC has announced that their next flagship will be unveiled on the 11th of May. Previous reports had revealed that the phone will be launched as the HTC U (HTC Ocean) but a tweet by Venturebeat owner, Evan Blass revealed otherwise. The HTC U will now launch as HTC U 11.

HTC U 11

The new name was chosen as a way to merge the former and the new naming schemes. The HTC Ocean will be the eleventh flagship device from HTC, succeeding the HTC 10 hence the addition of the “11” suffix to the name. Thinking of it now, HTC Ocean 11 sounds like a much better name. But only if wishes were horses….

For the colors, the HTC U 11 will come in black, blue, red, white and silver. All phones will have the same liquid surface design as the HTC U Ultra. However, color variants will be region specific.

Xiaomi Mi 6: Taking a Look at All 6 Generations Of Mi Flagship

While Xiaomi was teasing the April 19 launch of the Mi 6 which has finally launched, one caption that kept recurring is “You waited 203 days, we waited 7 years”. The company apparently was referring to the period since its inception until now and perhaps, looking back at the evolution of the Mi-series which is Xiaomi’s flagship series, the Mi 6 seems to be the perfect flagship both in design and specs, the best in the pack so far. How true is that? Only a comprehensive review and time will give a definite answer to that. But we’ll take a look at the six generation of Mi-series flagship to see how the line has evolved right from the Mi 1 till the Mi 6.

Xiaomi Mi 1

xiaomi mi 1

The Xiaomi Mi 1 happens to be the first of Xiaomi’s Mi-series smartphones and indeed the company’s very first phone. The device was launched on August 16, 2011, and went up for sale in October of the same year. It comes with a Qualcomm MSM8260 (Snapdragon S2) processor with 1GB RAM backing it up. The Mi 1 features a 4-inch display with 854 x 480p resolution and runs MIUI 3 based on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS.Xiaomi launched a refreshed version called Mi 1s a while later with a slightly faster processor and MIUI ROM based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Further, the Mi 1 packs an 8MP rear camera and a 1930mAh battery. It launched with a price of 1,999 Yuan (~$217), a price tag Xiaomi will maintain for successive devices until the Mi 6.

Xiaomi Mi 2

The Xiaomi Mi 2 came a year later, precisely on August 16, 2012. The Mi 2 came with a slightly larger and powerful 4.3-inch HD display. It also features a Qualcomm APQ8064 (Snapdragon S4 Pro) Quad core processor backed by 2GB of RAM. The Mi 2 sports an 8MP camera but runs MIUI 4 based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The battery was slightly upgraded to 2000mAh capacity. The Mi 2S was later released the following year with a  slightly faster processor and 32GB storage variant with a 13MP rear camera. Despite the upgrade over the Mi 1, the Mi 2 still started at 1999 Yuan.

The third-gen Mi 3 joined the party in September 2013 with the same 1999 Yuan price and a more sophisticated hardware lineup. It sported a slightly larger 5-inch display with Full HD resolution (1080p) and the display came with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The Mi 3 packs Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. There is 16GB and 64GB onboard storage options, as well as a 13MP rear sensor with dual LED flash. Xiaomi Mi 4

Xiaomi Mi 5

The cycle of release was broken by the Mi 5 which took two years from the Mi 4 to come. The Xiaomi Mi 5 was released 24 February 2016 with a host of changes on the design and hardware front. The Mi 5 sports a 3D front and back glass encased in a metal, thus adding to its premium look and feel. Xiaomi Mi 6

Bose Connect App Secretly Collecting and Selling User Data: Lawsuit Filed

A lawsuit has been filed against Bose for secretly acquiring personal data from customers and selling it to advertisers. Earlier this week, Kyle Zak from Chicago has sued Bose for disregarding the privacy of its users.

According to Zak, he had purchased Bose QuietComfort 35 headphones by paying $350 and then installed the Bose Connect app on his phone to “get the most out of your headphones.” Hence, he entered his details like name, email ID and the serial number of the headphone on the Connect app.

Through Bose Connect app, users can adjust some audio settings like noise cancellation and perform firmware updates. This app can be used with wide range of Bose audio systems such as SoundSport Wireless, SoundSport Pulse Wireless, QuietControl 30, SoundLink Around-Ear WIreless II headphones, SoundLink Color II, SoundLink Revolve and SoundLink Revolve+.

Bose Connect app

Zak found that the app maintains a record of all the songs and podcast he listened. This data is apparently sold to third-party companies like Segment.io, an analytics firm.

Zak’s lawyer, Christopher Dore has said that people make use of headphones considering it as private, but the company has been providing user details to third parties which should not be shared. He added that generally users do not read the privacy agreements of the app, and there is no information available on collection of data in the privacy agreement of the Connect app,

Dore is a partner of Edelson PC, a company that specializes in filing lawsuit against tech firms for violating privacy of the users. Zak claims that the user information that is collected and sold by Bose can provide insight on the behavior of the customer as well as their religious and political views.

Bose whose annual sales is $3.5 billion has not responded yet on the lawsuit which mainly claims that the company is disregarding the privacy rights of the consumers. Zak wants Bose to stop collecting user data through the Connect app and he is also demanding $5 million in damages for customers of aforementioned Bose audio devices.

Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone Allegedly Spotted with Huge Bezel-less Display, Button-less Chin

The elusive Essential Android smartphone has been allegedly spotted in a new ad from Michelin. A mysterious phone pops up in the ad at 0:07 and is visible only for a second.

Essential Android Phone

The still shot that we have here shows the mysterious phone with a huge display. Some may speculate that it may be the Xiaomi Mi MIX concept phone. The smartphone in the Michelin ad has only top corners rounded. However, Mi MIX concept phone has all the four corners rounded.

Also, it is not the Sharp Aquos Crystal or the Doogee Mix because the chin of the mysterious device does not feature any button. The Aquos Crystal as well as the Doogee Mix feature large-sized chin with a Home key on it. Hence, it is speculated that it may be the Essential Android phone from Andy Rubin.

The frontside of the phone is mainly occupied by its display and it has a slim button-less chin. The phone sports ultra-slim bezels. The protective case that the phone is wearing has three cutouts which could be for a USB Type-C port, a headphone jack and an external speaker.

Andy Rubin who is known as the father of Android is heavily rumored to be working on a flagship smartphone that is speculated to come with modular capabilities. Rubin has already released a teaser image that only shows a small part of the phone. However, the image does reveal that it features very slim bezels and it probably suggests that the screen occupies major portion of the frontside of the phone. Rumors have it that the phone features a pressure-sensitive display like the one present on recent iPhones.

Xiaomi Mi 6 Screen’s Oleophobic Layer Test Video

Oleophobic coating in now becoming a norm that is included on the screen of almost all smartphones, perhaps, except the cheap devices. In case you don’t know what an Oleophobic coating is, it is an anti-fingerprint (anti-smudge) coating on glass and ceramic surfaces which create an oil resistant surface that keeps dirt, dust, oils, and water. It doesn’t make it fingerprint proof, though, but keeps the grease at bay, not allowing it to adhere to the glass.

Xiaomi Mi 6

The coating is the reason why a simple wipe with a soft cloth will often leave the smartphone looking brand new, without the use of any extra cleaning solutions. Usually, if any normal glass has fingerprints on it, trying to wipe it with nothing but a cloth will only make the grease to spread across the surface without coming off completely. In that case, you may require some kind of cleaning solution to completely clean off the greasy screen surface. But the presence of an Oleophobic screen takes that away. Also, note that devices with Corning Gorilla Glass protection have their own coating.

The Mi 6 comes with an Oleophobic coating over its curved screen surface and that surface is put to test in this short video. One sure way to know if the display is still oleophobic is to sprinkle tiny water droplets on the display and if the coating is there, the water gathers into balls and rolls off the screen entirely. That is exactly what is done in this test and the result proves the Mi 6 has a functional oleophobic coating. The Oleophobic coating isn’t a permanent thing, though, as it wears off over time and the duration depends on the manner of usage. The good thing is that it can be recoated and it is something you can do yourself at home. You can check out the Weibo video post from here.

A beta version was made available two months after the announcement but it was buggy. Today, Elephone has released a stable version which can now be installed by anyone and that fixes the bugs in the November beta update.

The update comes with March’s security patch and the changelog says the fingerprint sensor has been optimized. The update is not available as an OTA yet so you will have to manually flash it for now. The update comes in at over 1GB in size.

Xiaomi Mi Note 3 Now Rumoured To Launch in Q3 2017

Xiaomi finally launched the Mi 6 yesterday and it still is one of the hottest topics in the tech world at present. One issue that continues to prop up is the lack of an OLED display on the flagship. The Xiaomi Mi 6 uses an LCD display, thus drawing a comparison with the Mi Note 2 which featured an OLED display. That apparently has given rise to talks about the Mi Note 3 which would likely be Xiaomi’s next device with an OLED display.

Xiaomi launched the Mi Note 2 flagship in October last year, the same day with the Mi MIX launch. There is no doubt that the Mi Note 2 is an awesome device, with a curved edge design which gave Samsung a run for its money. Xiaomi was earlier rumoured to be working on a successor to the Mi Note 2 dubbed Mi Note 3. A new rumour emanating from a Weibo tipster is now making the rounds that the Mi Note 3 will be launching in the third quarter (Q3) of this year and would use an OLED display.
