Geekbench listing reveals Nokia 8.1 specs: Snapdragon 710, Android Pie

The Nokia 8 launched last year as the first Nokia flagship phone following the takeover of the brand by HMD Global Oy. The device got lukewarm reviews with complaints about some missing features such as an AMOLED display and a higher IP rating etc. It got a refresh at the beginning of the year called the Nokia 8 Sirocco with the same processor but a new design, better display, and a bigger battery. A successor has appeared on Geekbench as the Nokia 8.1 and it appears it won’t be a flagship.

The Nokia 8.1 was benchmarked yesterday and the site reveals some of its key details. If you were expecting the Snapdragon 845, you may have to wait for the Nokia 9 or maybe a Nokia 8.1 Plus if there is anything like that as the Nokia 8.1 is powered by the Snapdragon 710 chipset. The upper mid-range chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM.

Geekbench also reveals the phone will run Android 9.0 out of the box. That should placate those who are disappointed about the less powerful chipset. The Nokia 8.1 scored 1841 points in the single-core test and 5807 points in the multi-core test.

TENAA listing reveals new color variant for the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite with 8GB RAM

The Mi 8 Lite launched last month alongside the Mi 8 Pro in three color variants and 2 RAM variants (4GB and 6GB). A new TENAA listing has revealed we may be getting a new color variant and an 8GB RAM model soon.

The new variant’s model number is M1808D2TT, similar to the original whose model number is M1808D2TE. It has the same specs, so you get a 6.26-inch FHD+ LCD display, a Snapdragon 660 processor, dual rear cameras, a 24MP selfie camera, and 3250mAh (3350mAh) battery capacity.

However, the images for this listing are of a black variant of the phone with a pink/ twilight orange frame and accents around the dual rear cameras and the fingerprint sensor.

We have no idea when this new color variant will be announced. However, we’ll advise not to get your hopes high. The images from the first TENAA listing of the device are of a white variant but Xiaomi didn’t unveil that color at the launch. According to both TENAA listings, the Mi 8 Lite should be available in at least 8 different colors including red, silver, rose gold, green, red, and pink.

Huawei announces 1TB backup storage drive for the Mate 20

Huawei‘s new Mate 20 series comes in multiple storage variants with support for storage expansion via the new NM card expansion slot. However, it is possible to lose all your files if your phone gets stolen or develops a fault that requires it to be wiped clean. To keep your files safe, Huawei has announced a portable storage drive for backing up your files.

The Huawei backup storage drive has a 1TB capacity and also doubles as a charger. It is shaped like a wireless charger and its top is covered in waterproof fabric. It has a silicone base to prevent it from sliding off the surface and the shell is made of plastic.

Huawei says it doesn’t require a special app to work. All you need to do is plug in your Mate 20 phone and it backs up your documents, photos, and videos automatically. You can also select the files you want it to back up. Huawei also claims the process is very fast, backing up to 10 hi-resolution photos in a second.

The Huawei backup storage drive has a USB-C port and works with 5V/2A chargers as well as Huawei’s 9V2A and 5V4.5A chargers. Sadly, it doesn’t support the new 40W SuperCharge technology.

Elephone U2 Pro pop up camera demo video and key specs outed

Just as it promised, Elephone has showcased the pop-up camera-sporting Elephone U2 Pro at the Hong Kong Tech expo which is ongoing. The flagship device was among the host of models that the Chinese company put on exhibition at the event. The company even let visitors handle the unannounced model to see how the camera works. There is even a video showing the camera in use.

The Elephone U2 Pro design is such that both the front and rear cameras are housed on the same pop-up housing. Thus, it is no surprise that the cameras pop up when the camera app is opened. The design of the U2 Pro looks even more beautiful in real life than on the render. It comes with a double curved edge design which gives a bezel-less appearance.

The Hong Kong Tech expo exhibition also revealed some of the key specifications of the Elephone U2 Pro. Among the details unveiled is a 6.42-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with ultra-thin bezels and dual curved screen. The device comes with a screen-to-body ratio of 928%. On the camera end, a 16MP dual front camera calls the shot. While at the back there is a 12MP+5MP dual rear camera setup. The U2 Pro also comes with an underscreen fingerprint sensor as well as Face ID unlock technology, NFC, wireless charging and USB-C port. The device will get its juice from a 3600mAh battery. Elephone is yet to reveal the chipset that would be onboard but it is likely a MediaTek Helio P60 or Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Apart from the U2 Pro, Elephone also showcased the Elephone U2 and Elephone PX. All three models are expected to launch any moment from now. The Elephone U2 will feature a 6.26-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with an equally high screen to body ratio. The stand out feature on the model is no doubt the triple rear camera setup at the rear. Although the device features a pop-up camera design, the pop-up housing only has the front camera. The rear cameras at aligned vertically at the top left corner of the back. The front camera is a dual 16MP+2MP combo while at the rear, there is a 12MP+5MP+2MP combo. The device will be powered by an Helio P60 chipset and has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on its glass back. As a result of the glass back, there may also be wireless charging support.

On its part, the Elephone PX will have a 6.34-inch HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The device will be powered by either a MediaTek MTK6761 SoC or an MTK6762 SoC. The processor will team up with a 3GB + 32GB memory as well as 4GB+64GB on some models. The Elephone PX packs a 16MP+2MP dual camera setup at the front and rear. The front camera uses the popup design as well. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor onboard.

Honor Watch to launch on October 31, possibly a cheaper variant of the Huawei Watch GT

Honor will unveil the Magic 2 phone on October 31 but just like its parent company, Huawei did during the launch of the Mate 20 series, it will also announce a smartwatch. A poster for the Honor Watch has surfaced confirming the watch will launch alongside the Magic 2.

The poster (pictured above) shows the silhouette of the Honor Watch. We can see it has a circular dial and two hardware buttons. The design is similar to that of the Huawei Watch GT but the dial and the straps should have a different design. We also expect the Honor Watch to have the same internals as the Huawei Watch GT but with lesser features which should translate to a cheaper price tag.

The Huawei Watch GT comes in two variants – a Classic and a Sports version. Both run a custom OS and not Wear OS. They are also powered by a Cortex-M4 chipset and not Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2100 or the newer Snapdragon 3100 chipset.

Recently, OnePlus changed the launch event date from October 30 to October 29 due to date collision with Apple’s event. Today, a Swedish retailer, Webhallen has listed the OnePlus 6T ‘Ultimate Limited Edition’ on the website with a stock of up to 100 units. The listing is giving us a first look at the new packaging box of OnePlus 6T. The package also includes a tagline of “OnePlus 6T as well as a host of secret things.”

The OnePlus 6T ‘Ultimate Limited Edtion’ box at first gives a promising official look but upon retailer’s denial of any explanation makes it feel like a fake product listing. We are not denying any possibility of OnePlus 6T Ultimate Edition as OnePlus has launched limited edition devices earlier also. In the past, OnePlus 5T received a Star Wars edition while OnePlus 6 had an Avengers limited edition. So, the overall possibility of the special edition OnePlus 6T can’t be denied.

OnePlus 6T special variant is expected to host high-end specs of 8GB RAM with 256 GB storage along with some OnePlus accessories like cases, screen protectors, etc. Additionally, OnePlus 6T will carry Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with a waterdrop display having an on-screen fingeprint sensors. It will be OnePlus’s first device to launch without a headphone Jack. OnePlus 6T is expected to come with the Android 9.0 Pie.

OnePlus brings forward OnePlus 6T launch to October 29 because of Apple

Everyone has been looking forward to the launch of the OnePlus 6T for weeks now. The launch date was eventually announced a few weeks ago and scheduled for October 30. However, a new development has caused the Chinese manufacturer to change the launch date. That new development is Apple!

A few days ago, Apple announced it would have an event on October 30, the same day as the launch of the OnePlus 6T, where it is expected to launch the new iPad Pro. The launch will also hold in the same state (New York) and begin an hour after the OnePlus 6T commences. Apple’s announcement changed everything for OnePlus. Both events holding the same day and in the same state and with a timing so close to each other would mean one product would get overshadowed by the other.

In an official forum post, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau says they had to talk to their press contacts who said sticking to the date would cause their product to be overshadowed by Apple’s launch. They also had to talk to members of the OnePlus community to get their opinion on the matter. After hours of debate, OnePlus had to “succumb” and announce a new date for the launch:

Yes, the decision OnePlus made was to bring the date forward by one day. The venue will be the same and the time will remain 11 AM EDT.

Lenovo to increase mobile production capacity by 10x upto 1 million units per month in 2019

In a bid to address the increasing demand of mobile smartphones in India, Lenovo is all set to increase mobile production by 10x. Currently, Lenovo is producing 100,000 mobile units in a month, but company is planning to increase it to 1 million units per month. Speaking to PTI, Lenovo group president, Edward Chang opened up about the Lenovo’s future plans in India and said, “We make mobile phones in India at our partner’s factory. At present we have a production capacity of 100,000 per month which we plan to increase in the range of 500,000 to 1 million units per month by the end of 2019.”

The increase in volume does not include Motorola devices, a Lenovo owned brand. Recently, Lenovo has partnered with Flipkart to sell its devices, estimating the sale of 6 to 7 million units in India.

“We have partnered exclusively with Flipkart because the share of online and offline market will be equal in India by 2020. This means it is 60-70 million units business opportunity every year,” Chang said.

Yesterday, Lenovo has launched three new mid-level devices at an event. Among the newly launched devices, Lenovo K9 is made available for Rs 8999 and Lenovo A5 in two models for Rs 5999 and Rs 6999.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro face unlock in the spotlight: gets fooled by two guys with beards and short hair

Huawei decided to tow the line of Apple by including a 3D Face Unlock technology on its latest flagship Mate 20 Pro. The device can be unlocked using an in-display fingerprint sensor and the 3D face recognition technology. Tech blog Android Pit has reported a recent discovery that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro3D face recognition can be unlocked by a person with some resemblance to the original owner of the phone.

According to the report, the review copy that was received was being passed around in the office, apparently for everyone to catch a glimpse. But interestingly, a second person who with a slight resemblance to the original user was able to unlock the phone using the Face unlock feature. Repeated tests showed that the feature isn’t very secure. A second Huawei Mate 20 Pro unit was used for the test and the result was still the same thing. Although Huawei had issued a disclaimer about the insecure nature of the 3D Face Unlock, we don’t expect it to open so easily despite both persons having similar looks. Even in this case, there are some key features separating both persons although they are both full-bearded and have short hair. First, the two men have different skin colours, different contours, eye colour. Also, one of the men uses glasses while the other one doesn’t.

It must be noted that both copies of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro use the same software version, with build number 9.0.0.113 (C432E10R1P16). In that case, the easiest explanation that can be adduced is that it could be a software glitch and should be something an update should fix. Since both units are earlier models, the same problem may not be on the commercial units.

Honor Magic 2 leaked photo reveals blue, black variants with triple rear cameras

A fresh image of the upcoming Honor Magic 2 smartphone has surfaced on Weibo. The leaked image not only showcases its two color variants, but also reveals that it will be the first Honor to arrive with triple rear cameras.

The Honor Magic 2 leaked photo shows that it is equipped with mirror glass back. The glass rear appears to be curved on all the four sides.

The blue variant of the phone has a tint of purple on it. The top-left corner has a triple camera system. At the top is the LED flash followed by the two sensors. The third sensor is placed after a small gap. The “AI Vision” text can be seen below the third camera sensor. The Honor branding can be seen at the bottom-left corner of the device.

Black is the other color variant of the smartphone. Instead of the Honor branding, the handset has a strange “Eiffel” text. Also, instead of “AI Vision” present on the blue variant, “Dual Lens” is mentioned below the third camera sensor of the black variant.

There is no fingerprint scanner on the rear side of the smartphone. Rumors have it that it will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint reader. Honor has already confirmed that the Magic 2 smartphone will be sporting a manual slider design. It will be the first phone from the company to be fueled by Kirin 980 chipset. It will also carry support for 40W superfast charging. It is speculated that the smartphone could be equipped with a graphene-based battery.

Samsung W2019 leaked photos reveal its design from all angles

The Samsung W2019 clamshell flagship phone was recently spotted on the website TENAA, the telecom authority from China. The W2019 smartphone will be arriving as a successor for the W2018 that was announced in December 2017. Probably, the South Korean company could be planning to launch the smartphone around the same time. Freshly leaked photos of the Samsung W2019 have appeared on Weibo to reveal its design from all angles.

The leaked images of the Samsung W2019 show that it is equipped with dual displays. One of them is present on the outside of the device while the other can be seen after flip opening it.

A horizontal dual camera setup is located on the backside of the W2019. The Samsung W2018 has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The W2019 seems to be equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The overall appearance of the Samsung W2019 does not deviate much from its predecessor. An earpiece and a selfie shooter are positioned above the inner screen. A directional pad and a numeric keypad are available on the other half of the device.

The TENAA listing of the Samsung W2019 contains minimum details such as dimensions, display and battery size. It has revealed that the phone is equipped with a pair of 4.2-inch display that probably carries support for Full HD resolution like Samsung W2018. It is packed with a 3,000mAh battery. The handset measures 132.9 x 63.2 x 17.3mm. Since the W2018 was powered by Snapdragon 835, it is likely that the W2019 flip phone will arrive with Snapdragon 845 chipset.

The Samsung W2019 that has a model number SM-W2019 has been certified by Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and TENAA. These certifications have revealed that the launch of Samsung W2019 smartphone may not be far away.

Xiaomi has today announced a new Mi TV 4A variant for the Chinese market. The new model comes with a 58-inch display and will retail for a decent 2999 yuan (~$433) price tag, except that you won’t likely get it at that amount outside China.

The Mi TV 4A series is supposed to be an affordable series and was first unveiled in China in March last year. The series was first unveiled in 43-inch, 49-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch models and later on, a cheaper 32-inch model was launched. The 43-inch and 49-inch models feature a 1080p resolution on their displays, while the 55-inch and 65-inch models are the high-end versions both having 4K display resolution a piece. The latest 58-inch model also comes with a 4K HDR screen.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 58-inch is powered by a quad-core 64-bit high-performance Amlogic T962 clocked at 1.5GHz while the graphics aspect is powered by a Mali 450 750MHz GPU. The processor is paired with 2GB of RAM. The device also offers up to 8GB of flash memory as against 32GB of eMMC5.1 flash memory on other versions. In addition, the Mi TV 4A 58-inch version comes with support for HDR10, a static contrast ratio of 5000:1, refresh rate of 60Hz, viewing angle of 178 °, and the latest UHD HLG while also supporting the Dolby Vision format. The Mi TV 4A comes in Smart just like Xiaomi’s range of Mi TV, sporting a dual-band WiFi connection, as well as Bluetooth 4.2. The Bluetooth connectivity allows the TV to connect with accessories such as Bluetooth mouse, speakers, keyboard, gaming pad and others.

The smart TV is also equipped with Xiaomi’s PatchWall artificial intelligence system with voice control. The system can intelligently learn the user’s preference based on usage habits. It comes with 3 HDMI ports, 2 USB ports and antenna, AV input to connect the set-top box, S / PDIF and other interfaces.
