Leaked Pixel XL Case Gets Compared to OnePlus One

Earlier this week we reported on some sellers who already have cases for the new pixel phones available for purchase. Someone purchased the case for the Pixel XL and compared it to his OnePlus One which was also wearing a case.

OnePlus One Compared to Pixel XL case

According to the cardboard inside the case, the phone will have a 5.5” screen which is the same size as that of the OnePlus One, but the OnePlus One does appear bigger than the case for the Pixel. This means it’s either the case is a fake or the dimensions are just wrong.

Google May Finally Include A Reboot/Restart Button on The Pixel Phones

I can’t remember the first time I saw a reboot button on an android phone, but I know it’s more than 3 years already. While manufacturers have been offering it for years, Google has never put it on the official builds of Android. I have used a couple of nexus devices and the only way to restart the device without shutting down first is by holding down the power button for a while (10 seconds or so) and it restarts.

It seems Google has finally listened to users and will include a restart button on the new pixel phones.  According to a picture  provided by a tipster, the new Pixel phones running Android 7.1 will present you with the restart option when you push the power button. The picture has been confirmed to be real but there’s a possibility that it might not make it to the final builds as the version that has the feature is a pre-release software for developers and testers.

nexus2cee_rebooter_thumb

This is not an unusual act for Google, they are known for removing certain features from final builds of android. Remember freeform split screen multi-tasking available on developer previews of Android N? It didn’t make it to the final Nougat build.

iPhone 7 Estimated to Cost Apple $224.80 to Produce, Yet Starts at $649!

Research firm IHS has come out with a controversial claim that the iPhone 7, from their estimates costs Apple just $224.80 even though Apple sells the flagship for twice that amount or more. The base version of the iPhone 7 with 32GB of built-in storage sells for $649. The Research firm took apart the iPhone’s parts and also put into consideration several factors before arriving at that damning conclusion which doesn’t include the iPhone 7 Plus.

iPhone 7 teardown

IHS first x-rayed the cost of last year’s iPhone 6s and got an estimated production cost of about $211.50 which ordinarily suggests this year’s iPhone 7 will cost more. Considering the base storage has been ramped up from 16GB to 32GB and that could have affected the production cost. Apart from that, the new chips on the iPhone 7 could also have affected the final production cost. The A10 chip is estimated by IHS to cost $26.90, then the new display cost an estimated $43 to produce as well as the cameras coming in at $19.90 per iPhone unit.

Though Apple is not keen on discussing tear-down costs, this estimated data could indicate mounting pressure on the US-based company’s profit margin, because the cost may even be more. IHS didn’t take into consideration factors like warehousing, research and development, and marketing.

iPhone 7

The iPhone 7 even at that is considered to carry an outrageous price tag considering its specs. Reference have been made to competitively priced flagships whose specs are at par with the iPhone 7’s. The most recent is the LeEco Le Pro 3 which despite having a Snapdragon 821 chipset and a huge 4070mAh battery, starts at 1799 Yuan ($270). The Le Pro 3 pricing highlights LeEco’s negative profit pricing strategy for devices. The company makes up for this by getting more people onto the expansive LeEco Ecosystem from where it aims to make profits when users buy contents, applications and services on their platform.

Xiaomi Mi 5S Antutu Score Revealed: Trumps LeEco Le Pro 3

The first time the Mi 5S showed up on Antutu we didn’t  get a score, just a bunch of details like the android version, the type of processor, GPU, and screen resolution. The reason might be because the phone wasn’t well optimised yet or Xiaomi was just bidding its time.

Today, the Xiaomi Mi 5S’ Antutu score was released online. The Mi 5S scored a whooping 164002 points, overtaking LeEco’s Le Pro 3 which used to be the former champion with a score of 163594.

mi-5s-antutu-02

mi-5s-antutu-01

The way I see it, Xiaomi’s rival is LeEco not Huawei or Vivo or OPPO. LeEco has thrown a few punches already with the launch of the Cool1 which is the only contender capable of challenging Xiaomi’s Redmi Pro and the current pricing of the LeEco Le Max 2 which sells for less than $250. Now the fight has been taken to the flagships.

LeEco announced it’s new flagship device, the LeEco Pro 3 earlier today with some very interesting specs. The phone has a 5.5” FHD display, comes in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants, snapdragon 821 processor and starts at $270. Although there were rumors of a version with 8GB of RAM but nothing like that was announced.

Leak Reveals Mi 5S Will Use Same Pressure Sense as iPhone Screen

Xiaomi’s Mi 5S launch is next week so expect lots of leaks and new details up till the day before the launch.

Today a MIUI fan running a beta version of MIUI 8 on his Xiaomi Mi 5 found a menu called 3D Touch hidden in the settings option. The setting was turned off by default and can be switched on at will but knowing that the Mi 5 doesn’t support 3D Touch, turning it on won’t make any difference.

xiaomi-5s-3d-touch

The first leak on the Xiaomi Mi 5s mentioned that it will feature a pressure sensitive display, so since this feature is already hidden in MIUI it means that the rumour may be true after-all.

The 3D Touch function on the iPhone allows you to do a lot of things such as peek at information without opening the app itself, or presenting new options just by holding on the app icon for longer similar to when you right-click on your computer.

The phone ships in quite a premium box as most of the Nubia phones. Inside of it, you can find a fast charger, USB C cable, SIM ejector pin, micro USB to USB C adapter and a pair of earphones that actually have a decent sound quality.

Nubia Z11 Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

p1010042jpg

One of the key selling points of the Nubia Z11 is its 5.5” true bezel-less display. In fact, the phone has 81% screen-to-body ratio, which is one of the best in the business.

Speaking of that display, we have a sharp, vibrant and bright 1080p panel that also has a decent sunlight legibility and it is covered with the Gorilla Glass 3.

The Z11 comes with interactive edge gestures. For example, you can quickly swipe through the recent apps or quickly access a different desktop.

p1010030jpg

An 8MP shooter is here for selfies and just below it there are nicely backlit capacitive buttons that can be customized, and you can adjust the brightness of them.

p1010031jpg p1010146jpg

Also, the home button serves as a pulsing notification light, which is pretty cool.

p1010029jpg

As far as the main camera, we have a pretty powerful setup that includes a 16MP Sony sensor, f/2.0 aperture, OIS and dual tone dual-LED flash. The fingerprint sensor works fine and you can unlock your phone straight from the standby mode.

p1010060jpg

The loudspeaker quality is great. The sound is balanced, there is a decent amount of depth and even a little bit of bass. You can also tweak the audio settings with the Dolby Atmos Surround Sound system.

p1010058jpg

The sound quality via the headset jack is great too and that is thanks to the built-in Hi-Fi audio chip.

p1010067jpg

The buttons are made of metal and they have a great tactile feedback.

p1010058jpg

It’s great that we have the IR blaster to control devices like TVs.

Nubia Z11 Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

p1010085jpg

When it comes to hardware, the Nubia Z11 is a true flagship smartphone. It sports a Snapdragon 820 chip, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which is also expandable via the microSD card slot.

zte-nubia-z11-3-640x427-c

If you are willing to pay extra $100, you can get a super sexy-looking black and gold version that comes with 6GB of RAM.

As expected, I didn’t have any issues when I played 3D games on the highest graphics settings. Also, the phone did not overheat at all.

Nubia Z11 Review: BENCHMARKS

Nubia Z11 Review: USER INTERFACE

The phone ships with the Nubia UI 4.0, which is built on top of Android 6.0. It is quite a heavy skin and there are so many built-in features and customization options to talk about.

Just to name a few, the split-screen mode allows you to run two apps side by side. Also, you can adjust the display settings, customize the breathing light and capacitive buttons and use a few screen gestures that work great.

Even though there is no app tray and there are some features that you may not use, I love the simplistic look of the UI. Also, the phone has been fast and I didn’t have any hiccups or lag.

Nubia Z11 Review: CAMERA

The camera app can take pictures very fast and there are quite a few shooting modes to choose from. For example, you can adjust the camera settings in the pro mode or play with the “camera-family” apps. One of my favorites is the clone mode that works pretty well.

Nubia Z11 Review: IMAGE QUALITY

The daylight images taken with the 16MP camera look great. The pictures are sharp, there is a ton of detail, the colors look natural. Also, the dynamic range adjustment is good most of the time.

The indoor shots look good too but we can see a little bit more noise and less detail.

The low-light camera performance is kind of a mixed bag but we need to consider the fact that the phone runs on a very early international software build. You can definitely get some good-looking night photos but you may also get some pictures with quite a bit of noise and low amount of detail. I’m pretty sure we will see a software update to fix that.

The 4k video quality is pretty good and the footage looks quite sharp. The continuous auto-focus adjustment is graceful but it could be a little bit faster. The slow-motion video quality is not very impressive as there could be more detail. See the video review for video samples.

A selfie camera can take some great looking pictures in daylight and even in lower-lit situations. Also, 1080p video quality is not the best but it will be definitely good enough for social media.

Nubia Z11 Review: CONNECTIVITY

screenshot-2016-09-21-104452

The phone comes with a hybrid dual-SIM card tray, which can take either 2 SIMs or 1 SIM and the microSD card.

The call quality, signal reception, GPS, Wifi and all other connectivity options work just fine.

In fact, you can use the dual-antenna system to boost the signal reception quality if you need to.

Nubia Z11 Review: BATTERY LIFE

p1010098jpg

Nubia Z11 sports a 3000mAh battery and with my usage, I could get 1.5 days out of it. If I used the phone very intensively with the max. brightness display setting, I needed to charge the phone in the late evening.

When it comes to charging, the phone supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 tech that allows you to fully charge the phone in just 1 hour.

Nubia Z11 Review: CONCLUSIONS

p1010177jpg

Nubia Z11 is a great all-around flagship smartphone that looks just gorgeous.

p1010099jpg

Its bezel-less display is sharp and vibrant and the edge features allow you to increase productivity if you get used to using them.

p1010088jpg

The phone can handle anything you throw at it whether it would be heavy gaming or just scrolling through the user interface, which has a ton of features.

Also, the Nubia Z11 has great audio quality, good battery life and the device is very well-built.

p1010163jpg

Both cameras are very good too if you tend to take pictures in broad daylight since the low-light camera performance is kind of a mixed bag. You can definitely get some good looking night photos but sometimes you may feel disappointed with grainy pictures. Hopefully, Nubia will improve that with the future software updates.

p1010072jpg

All in all, Nubia Z11 is a very solid phone and the inconsistent low-light camera performance may be the only shortcoming at the moment.  The price of 499 EUR (International model) may sound a little steep for some but the phone brings a lot to the table and it is still a lot cheaper than the mainstream flagships. On the other hand, you can get the Chinese version of Nubia Z11 for just over $400 via the third-party resellers and that makes the Nubia Z11 one of the best phones in its price range.

Should You Buy The Jet Black iPhone 7 That Scratches Easily?

When Apple announced the new iPhone 7 two weeks ago, quite a number of folks were excited about the new jet black colour. The jet black iPhone 7/ 7 Plus is beautiful, there is no doubt about that, but it has got its own flaws. It scratches easily and is a fingerprint magnet. Apple is aware about the latter, so they put up a warning on their website in a tiny font they know a lot of us are going to ignore because of the size before units started shipping out.

apple-jet-black

The statement has been reproduced for you to read:

The high-gloss finish of the jet black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.

Apple says it may show fine micro-abrasions with use. Looking at the following tweets from owners of the jet black iPhone 7, the scratches are worse than Apple mildly put it.

jet-black-scratch-1 jet-black-scratch-2

And the smudges……

smudge-iphone-7

But since Apple has already put up a warning and suggested you use a case for a phone that sells for so much, they have absolved themselves of blame. So the decision to purchase a phone that scratches so easily lies with the buyer.

What I think Apple should have done is used a glass back and given it an oleophobic coating. People are paying a lot for the device already. But that’s too late now and owners will have no option than to purchase a case to protect their phones.

Le Pro 3 Official: Snapdragon 821, 6GB RAM & More! (UPDATE: Pricing Added)

LeEco has been making the headlines for the past few weeks, all thanks to its new flagship, the Le Pro 3. Today, the company has officially taken the wraps off the device and the phone is just as powerful as we thought it would be. The phone comes with the brand new Snapdragon 821 chipset, making it the first Chinese flagship to feature this chip along with 6GB RAM and other powerful configuration.

DESIGN:

The Le Pro 3 is made out of premium metal which accounts for 98% of the body and features brushed metal finish. The phone measures just 7.5mm in thickness! It’s really impressive that the company managed to limit the thickness to this level, as it features a large 4070mAh battery inside! When compared to competitors like Redmi Note 3 (8.2mm) and Mate 8 (7.9mm) who feature such large batteries, this is clearly a great achievement for the company.

Le Pro 3

There is the ‘Le’ logo on the front (you can see it in the image down below) with a breathing light, which is patented by the company. Further, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone, like the earlier released Le Max 2 and Le 2 models. So, you have the USB Type-C based CDLA standard.

le-pro-3-images

The Le Pro 3 comes in four color options, Silver, Gray, Rose Gold and Gold.

SPECS:

As mentioned above, the Le Pro 3 features the super fast Snapdragon 821 chipset, which was announced recently by Qualcomm. This will be a slightly faster version of the already powerful Snapdragon 820 chipset and the ASUS ZenFone Deluxe Special Edition is the only other phone in the market to feature this chipset. The chip will be clocked at up to 2.35GHz and the Adreno 530 GPU inside will clock at 653MHz.

Le Pro 3

There will be four memory variants (UFS 2.0) of the Le Pro 3 and unfortunately, there is no 8GB RAM model as previous rumors stated. So, the four variants are as follows: 4GB RAM + 32GB ROM, 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM, 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM and 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM.

le-pro-3-camera

As for the display, the phone features a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS LCD panel. You also get 2.5D arc glass on top of the display. The camera at the back comes with a 16MP sensor featuring 0.1s PDAF, Increased Sharpness, Intelligent Beauty Mode, Gender Recognition etc while up front, there is an 8MP shooter. So, this is basically standard flagship smartphone specs of 2016.

Le Pro 3

The battery on the device is large, making sure that the Le Pro 3 will easily last for more than a day. The phone comes with a 4070mAh battery with 24W QC 2.0 fast charging technology. The company revealed in the conference that the phone can charge up to 2000mAh in just 30 mins, which means almost 50% charge in just half an hour. Further, it said that the battery is extremely durable — 500 charges still retains 90% of capacity.

le-pro-3-fingerprint

Like other LeEco models, you have a fingerprint sensor at the back.

le-pro-3-vs-competition-battery

As for connectivity, the Le Pro 3 comes with dual SIM dual standby, dual antenna Wi-Fi MIMO with maximum transfer speeds of up to 866 Mbps. 3x CA helps it achieve up to 600MBbps speed on 4G LTE networks. There are dual speakers present on the device with a maximum 93dB volume.

Finally, for software, the phone comes with EUI 5.8 based on Android Marshmallow.

The below video is in Chinese, but you can get a first look at the device.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLmzm6WpdTc

PRICE:

The Le Pro 3 will start at just 1799 Yuan ($270) for the 4GB RAM + 32GB model. The 6GB RAM + 64GB model retails at 1999 Yuan ($300) which is amazing. There are two other variants as well, and they are costlier because they come loaded with special content. The latter are called the ‘Zhang Yimou’ special editions, named after the popular Chinese film director and come with special content from the upcoming movie, Great Wall featuring Matt Damon.  These special edition models are priced as follows: 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM will retail at $2499 Yuan ($375) while the 6GB RAM + 128GB model will retail at 2999 Yuan ($450).

These are amazing prices for the specs that you get! The Le Pro 3 will go on sale on September 28 at 10AM, and reservations start today at 5PM.

Xiaomi Mi 5S Could Have A Small 4-inch Variant, New Image Leaked

Xiaomi is all set to announce the Xiaomi Mi 5S flagship on September 27. While we know that this is a top-end device, new rumors state that there could be a smaller version of the Mi 5S featuring a 4-inch display. It is said that the ‘S’ in the Mi 5S could also stand for ‘Small’, further adding to the rumors about a small screen flagship device from the Chinese company.

mi-5s-4-inch-rumor-weibo

What’s more, a new image alleged to be of the smaller Xiaomi Mi 5S variant also cropped up online. Like the Xiaomi Mi5, this particular device is also seen to sport an oblong home button up front. We can even see the Mi logo on the top left corner, revealing the identity of its manufacturer. Further, the leak said that the phone will feature NFC and will support Xiaomi Mi Pay, which was announced about a month back. This rumor is in line with the report we heard yesterday about the Mi 5S supporting Mi Pay and Bus cards in China.

mi5s-small-screen-leak

As for the Xiaomi Mi 5S regular edition, expect the phone to feature Snapdragon 821 chipset inside with 6GB RAM and 256GB UFS 2.0 memory. Another highlighted feature of the phone should be the “Under Glass” Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor. Other rumored features include 16MP f/1.8 aperture lens, 4-axis image stabilization, PDAF and 3490mAh battery.

Soon, these specs will be confirmed by the company, so stay tuned.

There’s another rumor going around which states that the second product to be announced in the September 27 conference is going to be a new Xiaomi Mi TV 3S model. We can’t be sure of this right now, but hopefully, teasers this week could confirm the launch.

Meanwhile, let us know what you think about a possible 4-inch Mi 5S model? Does small screen flagships still attract your attention?

OnePlus 3 Gets CyanogenMod 14 ROM (Android 7.0 Nougat) But its Unofficial

The last we heard, officially, OnePlus was updating its HydrogenOS for the OnePlus 3 to a new version which is yet to even roll out. But right now, some guys at XDA forum have gifted users the opportunity to get a feel of the Android 7.0 Nougat based on CyanogenMod 14 ROM also called CM14 on their OnePlus 3.

OnePlus 3 CM14

This new CM14 ROM for the OnePlus 3 obviously isn’t for everybody but those who before now enjoy playing around with the CyanogenMod on their smartphones. If you think you have an idea what this is, you can as well hop on the adventure train. The software is still in beta stage, though, so there are some few bugs here and there.

However, the CM 14 ROM is touted to boot well, fingerprint scanner, mobile data, DPI selector, Audio, GPS, and perhaps NFC all work well on the unofficial ROM. Other features like Google Play application installing, Bluetooth, DASH charge, Alert Slider and calling also work. Only the camera have been noticed for now not to work and the bug is being worked on.

For the others who just like me, know nothing about playing around with CyanogenMod ROM, just keep an eye on the XDA forum for a stable version that’ll offer you Android N on your beloved OnePlus 3. For now, this version is not suitable for everyday use just yet. Meanwhile if you’re interested, you can download the ROM from here.

LeEco Pro 3 Geekbench Scores: 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 821

LeEco’s CEO Jia Yueting has confirmed that the launch of the snapdragon 821 Le Pro 3 is tomorrow which means the phone will indeed be the first Snapdragon 821 device released in China.

In his weibo post, the CEO says the LeEco Pro 3 will be the world’s first widely available snapdragon 821 phone. You might think that should go to ASUS with their Zenfone 3 Deluxe but not at all, as the phone is still only available in Taiwan for now.

In preparation for the launch, the phone’s Geekbench scores have surfaced online with the same model number (LEX720) as the Le 2s Pro whose Antutu score showed up 3 weeks ago. The results showed it was uploaded yesterday at about 5:26 pm.

The phone scores 1865 points on the single-core test and 4452 on the multi-core test. Other details revealed by the benchmarking site confirms the use of a Snapdragon 821 processor clocked at 2.19 GHz and 6GB of RAM. It will also come with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box.

Previous reports mention that the company will launch an 8GB RAM version of the LeEco Pro 3 with 256GB of built-in storage. The 6GB RAM version will have 64GB of ROM. LeEco is known for not including SD card slots in their phones just like Google and Apple does with their devices. So if you are going to settle for the 64GB version of the Pro 3, I think that should still be enough.

The company also released a couple of posters last week mocking Apple’s new phones for their small battery and lack of fast charging.

Google Confirms October 4 Launch Date and Teases Camera Samples

It is official already. October 4 is Pixel Day. Earlier today, Google uploaded a video on their Youtube channel which confirms an event slated for October 4.  The video entitled Google: Oct 4 is a 30-second clip that is filled with quadrilaterals or let’s say one quadrilateral that morphs into various forms.

The shape starts as the rectangle search bar and slowly transforms into  a vertical rectangle similar to the form factor of a phone. During the transformation you can make out the shape of a Nexus 7 and a Nexus 9.

The video’s description mentions a link (google.com/tenfour). If you decide to check it out, you see a shorter clip of the video in gif format and a space for entering your e-mail to get notifications. What you see afterwards is the basis for our second article. A gif of various pictures which I presume to be taken with one or both of the new Pixel phones.
