AnTuTu Releases Global Android Phone Users Preference For May 2018

AnTuTu has released a comprehensive data of Android smartphone users preference as captured in the month of May 2018. The data covers such preferences as display size and resolution, users preference based on RAM sizes, storage sizes and the operating system. The report is based on user preference globally and not just in China. The data are computed using pie charts to show the proportion of each preferred parameter.AnTuTu

Before dwelling on the data, let us note that the statistics for the past couple of months showed that most users prefer phones with a 5.5-inch display. This still remains the first choice for most users, accounting for 19.58 percent but the percentage of users who prefer the 5.5-inch screen size is shrinking. Instead, the data shows a growing trend which is a shift to 6-inch display packing models. This includes phones with 5.99-inch displays. With the rate at which 6 inches displays are being adopted by OEMs, spurred by the trending 18:9/19:9 aspect ratios that ensure the models still remain sizeable, this category may soon overtake 5.5 inches models in popularity.

Screen Resolution

With the shrinking proportion of 5.5-inch screens, the proportion of FHD 1080p (1080 x 1920 pixels) resolution has dropped. However, as far as May’s data is concerned, the proportion of 1080p resolution is still the highest, reaching 38.34%. At the same time, the proportion of 1080 x 2160 pixels and 1080 x 2280 pixels resolutions reached 20.19% and 6.36%, respectively. In fact, the current mainstream full-screen mobile phones adopt either of these two screen resolutions, which just reflects the popularity of full-screen mobile phones.

RAM capacity

On the aspect of RAM preference, the chart shows most users still prefer 4GB RAM capacity as it accounts for 33.90% of the total. At the same time, 6GB of RAM was equally popular with a percentage of 29.73%.

In addition, 8GB RAM phones are becoming popular as it accounts for 5.19%, while 2GB preference keeps shrinking. It is still possible to find phones with 1GB RAM and even 512MB and that is why there is 6.21% for other categories.

ROM capacity

Usually, the RAM and ROM go together and so since the 4GB RAM is popular, it is no surprise that most users prefer 64GB ROM as it accounts for 43.78% of the preferred choice.

Surprisingly, 128GB ROM accounted for 19.34% share of this category while 32GB storage held 20.52% of the preferred option.

Number of cores

The chart even includes aspects such as the number of cores which is present of the most popular processor category. As expected, Octa-core phones dominate the market. ATt75.02%, it is glaring that the most popular phone models come with Octa-core processors. The popular chipsets around such as the Snapdragon 845, SD 660, SD636, and Kirin 970 all are Octa-core processors. On the other hand, the use of Hexa-core chipset continues to dwindle with less than 2% share.

Android version

Finally, let’s take a look at the Android version onboard the models on the AnTuTu global mobile phone user preference chart in May. What is gratifying is that in this statistical cycle, the highest share of Android 8.0.0 is 26.9%.  At the same time, Android 8.1.0 accounted for 17.22%. Taken together, the number of Android 8.0.0 and above accounts for more than 44%, which is nearly half of the entire pie chart. Android Marshmallow has completely disappeared from the charts, grouped with other versions like Lollipop, KitKat with all of them accounting for 19.95% share.

Nokia 6.1 Plus Seen On Google ARCore Website

HMD Global appears to have a new Nokia 6 phone in the works. No, this isn’t the Nokia 6.2 but the Nokia 6.1 Plus. The new Nokia phone has been sighted on Google’s ARCore site.

Google has a website where ARCore supported devices are listed. Right under the section for HMD devices is the unreleased Nokia 6.1 Plus.

Nokia 6.1 Plus

This is the first time we are hearing of the device so there is no info on its specifications. However, there are some who think the Nokia 6.1 Plus may be the same device as the Nokia X6.

They are of the opinion that HMD Global will launch the Nokia X6 as the Nokia 6.1 Plus outside China. The reason for this belief is because the unreleased Nokia 5.1 Plus is rumored to launch in China as the Nokia X5.

Nokia X6

However, if we are to go by the Indian support page of the Nokia X6 that briefly went live last week, it nullifies the argument. The only other way to confirm is to see if ARCore works on the Nokia X6. Since the Nokia X6 isn’t on the list of supported devices, ARCore working on it may just be the proof we need to confirm it is the same device as the Nokia 6.1 Plus.

Samsung To Copy Huawei P20 Pro With A Triple Camera On Galaxy S10+

This year, Huawei has definitely launched the best camera phone ever. Until the previous year, Samsung devices were considered the best choices by most people when it came to the camera department, but with the arrival of the P20 Pro and its triple camera setup, things changed. But it seems that Samsung is ready to take revenge as it is tipped to be planning the inclusion of a triple camera on its next Galaxy S flagship. Or at least that is what has just been revealed by industry insiders from South Korea, that is Samsung’s homeland.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Display

According to the report, Samsung Galaxy S10 will be released in three variants which will sport two different screen sizes. The first version is expected to pack a single camera, the intermediate one will sport a dual camera just as the S9 Plus and the third one will be the most expensive and also the one with a triple camera. While the first two versions will be equipped with a 5.8-inch display, the third one will have a bigger display, probably with a size of 6.2 or 6.3 inches. Note that the second version may have a display with curved edges unlike the first one.

The variants are identified by the codenames Beyond 0, Beyond 1 and Beyond 2, respectively. Even though it will have a triple camera setup, the alleged Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus camera department will be different from the one of Huawei P20 Pro as the Korean company is expected to develop its own sensors. Other rumors suggested that this version will also be equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner such as the one we saw on the latest Vivo flagships. It seems that Samsung Galaxy S10+ in its most expensive variant will be way different from the other twos, more or less like the iPhone X.

Xiaomi Mi Box Finally Gets Android Oreo Stable Update

Back in 2016, Google and Xiaomi jointly announced the Mi Box – an Android TV version of Xiaomi’s Mi Box 3. It was also the first Xiaomi product to be officially sold in the US.

Xiaomi Mi Box

Out of the box, the Mi Box ran Android TV 6.0 based on Marshmallow. Even though it received some updates, it never got updated to Android TV 7.0 (Nougat), though there was a beta version available.

We thought Xiaomi had given up on the device until a beta version of Android Oreo began to roll out to beta testers about a month ago. Now, a stable version of the update has begun rolling out to the Mi Box globally.

The new update brings a revamped user interface, Google Assistant, and picture-in-picture mode. With Google Assistant, you can now control your smart home devices from the TV.

The company is expected to send out invites for the product launch event in the coming days. We can’t independently verify this rumour but it isn’t unusual for Huawei to bring its product to a new market bearing a different name. It has been done in the past like the Huawei P20 Lite which launched as Nova 3e in Malaysia and a couple of other markets. However, the specifications aren’t expected to change.

As a reminder, the new Honor 9i adopts a 5.84-inch notch display with full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 19:9. The phone has a 13MP + 2MP dual camera setup at the back with phase detection autofocus and a portrait mode. On the front, the device gets a 16MP shooter with artificial intelligence features. In April, Sony had introduced the Xperia XZ2 Premium flagship. A recent report had revealed that China could be one of the first markets to receive the smartphone since its pre-orders are slated to begin on July 2. However, the pricing of the smartphone is yet to be confirmed. Today, Sony Mobile Taiwan has confirmed that it will be holding a press conference in the country on July 5. It is likely that the Japanese tech giant may confirm the pricing of XZ2 Premium on the said date.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Specs and Features

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium houses a 5.8-inch notch-less IPS LCD display that supports a conventional aspect ratio of 16:9/. Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro Unboxing Pictures: Yet Another Uninspiring Notch Design

Xiaomi on Monday took the wraps off the much-publicised Redmi 6 Pro and the launch was more or less anti-clan anticlimax because there was nothing spectacular about the device to justify the hype it has been receiving. Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro comes with a notch design at the top of its 5.84-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2280 × 1080p and 19:9 aspect ratio. Although there is a software feature to hide the notch, quite a number of users just don’t want to see the notch.Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro

Another disappointing aspect is that the device features the same old Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset which has been utilized by Xiaomi on several models like the Redmi 4A. The chipset effectively places the model on the budget segment. On the positive side, though, the Redmi Pro 6 has several features that would make it adequate for moderate users. For one, the device comes with dual SIM card slots and a separate SD card slot. So, you won’t have to sacrifice a SIM slot in order to expand the internal storage and it can be expanded up to 256GB. The SIM card tray is located on the left side of the device. The device is crammed with a generous 4000mAH battery. At the right side are the volume rockers and power button.

In addition, the rear panel of the device is made of metal and there is a dual camera setup similar in design to what we have seen on the Redmi Note 5, Redmi S2, Mi Mix 2s and other. The rear camera is a 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup and there is equally a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. The front camera is a 5-megapixel sensor that supports AI portrait mode and AI face unlock. Some of its other features include MIUI 9 based Android 8.1 Oreo, IR remote control, 3.5mm audio jack, USB 2.0 port,  4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11n and so on.

Even though the specs are uninspiring, Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro makes up for that with its affordable pricing starting at 999 yuan ($153) for the 3GB + 32GB version. The high-end 4GB+64GB variant is priced at 1,299 yuan ($199). There is equally a 3GB + 32GB variant priced at 1,199 yuan ($183). The Xiaomi model is available in Rose Gold, Sand Gold, Stone Black and Lake Blue. Check out these unboxing photos of the Stone Black and Lake Blue variants.

Meizu’s mBack Is Here To Stay Even In Full Screen Phones, But Not Likely In The Current Form: Jack Wong

Physical home keys with embedded fingerprint readers were the preferred authentication method by many users before borderless displays became one of the main trends in the smartphones world. On several phones, these Home key were also multi-functional, such as the ones found on Meizu devices at that time. The physical Home keys on Meizu smartphones were among the most innovative as they integrated the mBack technology allowing the users to navigate through the user interface and perform quick actions by using gestures on the key.

With borderless display, there is no space for physical Home keys on the front panel, but Meizu will not ditch the mBack technology. That is what the company‘s CEO Jack Wong has just revealed to Meizu community. It looks like the Meizu 16 will come with a very advanced version of the mBack technology, but it will not be a Home key. In case you do not know, in the latest version of Flyme the company has already implemented the Super mBack technology which consists of in-display gestures. Thanks to this feature, it is possible to navigate through the user interface quickly by using taps, long presses, and swipes. So, given the declarations from Jack Wong, expect something innovative regarding the mBack technology about the upcoming Meizu 16 series.

The new line-up will be officially unveiled in August in at least two variants. One will be equipped with the new upper-midrange SoC Snapdragon 710 by Qualcomm, while the most powerful variant will have the octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset running at a max frequency of 2.8 GHz. Unlike most of the other important companies, Meizu will not embrace the notched design in favor of an 18:9 display, but the bezels will remain very narrow, probably even narrower than the Samsung Galaxy S9 series. There will also be an in-display fingerprint reader on board.

Snapdragon 1000 Fresh Details Appear to Reveal How Powerful it Could be

Rumors about the existence of Snapdragon 1000 SoC had surfaced in the previous month. The chipset is expected to be aimed towards powerful Windows 10 PCs. Fresh information on the features of the upcoming Qaulcomm Snapdragon 1000 has surfaced today.

The previous report had claimed that the Snapdragon 1000 may include Cortex A76 performance cores and lightweight Cortex A55 cores. Fresh report on WinFuture.de reveals that the developer platform of the Snapdragon 1000 that is codenamed Project Poipu was recently spotted with specs like 16 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and a pair of UFS 2.1 storage of 128 GB. It also includes Gigabit WLAN (also available on Snapdragon 850) and a new power management chip.

The TDP which stands for Thermal Design Power of the Snapdragon 1000 is around 12 watts. This suggests that it could rival with the U series chipset from Intel that has a TDP of 15 watts. The higher the TDP, the more stable is the processor. Hence, it seems that the Snapdragon 1000 will be able to deliver better performance than Intel’s Atom and Celeron chips. The U series chips are used for powering Ultrabooks. So, there is a possibility that the Snapdragon 1000 may power thin-sized laptops with small form factor.

The newly introduced Snapdragon 850 as well as the Snapdragon 845 SoC measure 12.4 x 12.4mm. The dimensions of the upcoming Snapdragon 1000 are 20 x 15mm which shows that it is bigger than the recent flagship chipsets by Qualcomm. Even though it is a large-sized chipset, it is still smaller than 15-watt Intel chips, claims the report.

The new report also claims that the Snapdragon 1000 will be a socketed chipset. In other words, the SoC will not be soldered to the motherboard. This will make it possible for the user to easily swap the chip. Hence, users may have the power to replace their old Snapdragon processor with the newest one on their Windows 10 PC.

Qualcomm is known for selling processors that are soldered to the motherboard. However, rumors surrounding the SD1000 suggest the U.S.-based chip maker could be venturing a new territory of manufacturing swappable processors.

There is no information available on the launch date of Snapdragon 1000. ASUS could be one of the first companies to launch SD1000 powered PC as it is rumored to be working on a device called Primus that features the same SoC.
