Xiaomi Mi 7 Confirmed to Feature Wireless Charging

Xiaomi has already hinted that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 7 flagship phone from the company will be powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset. The company has now confirmed through its official WeChat channel that the Mi 7 will be equipped with wireless charging technology.

The Chinese firm has confirmed that the US-based Integrated Device Technology will be providing it with the wireless charging module for its upcoming flagship phone. The exact pricing for each module is not known, but a common configuration is available for buying with a pricing of around $5. IDT has various wireless charging modules that ranges from 3-watt single direction to 15-watt dual-direction, but there is no confirmation on the specific model that will be available with the Xiaomi Mi 7.

Xiaomi Mi 7 will carry support for Qi wireless charging standard. Around three months ago, Xiaomi had joined Wireless Power Consortium that hinted that the next flagship phone from the company would carry support for Qi standard wireless charging. A report from the previous month states that Xiaomi Mi 7 with wireless charging will enter production from February this year.

Apart from wireless charging module from IDT, Xiaomi will be also using its RF products. This indicates that the wireless antennae of the alleged Mi 7 would be completely compatible with wireless bands of the U.S. This suggests that the Xiaomi Mi 7 could be the company’s first flagship phone to be available through carriers in the U.S.

The official website of Xiaomi is listed with various accessories from the company, but none of the Xiaomi phones are present on it. Its unlocked phones are available to the consumers in the U.S. through other channels like Amazon, Newegg and GearBest. Just as Huawei is planning to expand its reach in the U.S. territories by launching the Mate 10 flagship phone through carriers in the U.S., Xiaomi too could be planning to make its phones available through U.S.-based mobile operators starting with the Mi 7.

Sharp Aquos S3 With Full-Screen Display, Dual Cameras To Launch On 16th January

Sharp Aquos S3, which recently received certification from Taiwan’s certification body NCC, is now all set to get launched later this month, on 16th January.

The Japan-based company has announced that it is holding a press event on 16th January in Taipei, where it will announce Sharp Aquos S3 smartphone.

The phone is expected to come with a full-screen display with minimal bezels on the sides. It will features a dual camera setup on the back, with camera lenses stacked vertically.

Sharp Aquos S3 Launch Invite

Recently, the phone appeared on Geekbench benchmarking website, which revealed some of the specification of the device. The phone will be powered by a Qualcomm processor given that the lunch invite has a ‘Qualcomm Snapdragon’ branding.

According to the previous leaks, the phone could pack either Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 or Snapdragon 660 processor. In terms of memory, the device will have 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. There will be another variant of the phone with higher memory configuration — 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage.

The phone will feature a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with a screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. As said, the phone will feature a full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Its predecessor, Sharp Aquos S2 features a display with an unusual aspect ratio of 17:9.

Citi Analysts Say Apple May Acquire Netflix

Apple is not new to acquisitions. Just before the end of last year, it acquired Shazam Entertainment Ltd, owners of the song-recognition app, Shazam. Latest news says Netflix may be its next target.

Netflix

Initially, there were reports that Apple planned to launch its own video subscription service in 2018. However, Citi analysts Jim Suva and Asiya Merchant, say that the American company may purchase Netflix instead, thanks to President Trump’s corporate tax cut.

Both analysts say there is a 40% chance of it happening as the new tax rules will see Apple bring back into the US about $220 billion. Apple has most of its cash overseas due to the high taxation if it decides to move it into the US.

“With over 90 percent of its cash sitting overseas, a one-time 10 percent repatriation tax would give Apple $220 billion (roughly Rs. 14 lakh crores) for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) or buybacks,” says the two analysts.

iTunes is said to have lost some of its subscribers to subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon for their favorite shows. Apple wants to change that and is already working on creating more original shows.

It was reported last year that it planned to rent California’s Culver Studios for the shooting of original TV shows and movies, as it has plans to invest up to $1 billion in TV and movie productions. It has also hired a couple of Hollywood talents to help it achieve its ambition.

Samsung’s Latest Patent Is A Rollable Display With Fingerprint Sensor

South Korean tech giant Samsung is on a planet of its own in terms of smartphone shipments. The company is yet to release its 2017 total shipment but there is no doubt that the company still sits atop the charts. Despite its tall standings, Samsung is unrelenting in its quest for innovative products and has just filed a patent for a rollable display that can be activated by fingerprint.Samsung

The industry has been toiling with the idea of foldable displays with several patents and prototypes flying around. We expect to see smartphones with foldable displays this 2018 and Samsung may likely pioneer the trend. But before that happens, the tech giant is already working on rollable display technology. How about that? As stated earlier, the rollable display is activated by the fingerprint. Samsung isn’t the first to tinker with the idea of a rollable display. LG has a rollable display patent also but LG’s own is different from Samsung’s. Samsung patented display uses magnets that are placed along the main body housing the display whereas LG’s utilises an ultra-small rotating motor.

In addition, the patent reveals two types of bodies, both metallic, where the rollable display is pulled by the magnets. One is cylindrical and the other takes a square shape but they both are equipped with fingerprint sensors that allow users to unfold the rollable display with a touch of a finger. We can’t say if the technology will be adopted in smartphones or how it would be adapted for smartphones. But the size of the package heavily suggests it would be used for smartphones.

Meizu To Launch Full-Screen Phone January 4, Likely Blue Charm S/Meizu M6S

Chinese manufacturer, Meizu, has released a poster announcing the launch of a new phone on January 4. The image reveals a major feature of the phone which is its 18:9 display and our guess is that it is the Meizu M6S/Blue Charm S.

Meizu Blue Charm S/M6S

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been a steady stream of leaks regarding Meizu’s full-screen phones – the Meizu M6S/Blue Charm S and Meizu 15 Plus. However, the former has been rumored to arrive first.

With respect to design, the Meizu M6S will be the first phone to ditch the mBack button. That has resulted in the fingerprint scanner, moving not to the rear, but to the side beneath the power button.

For specs, the Meizu M6S will come with a 5.7” 18:9 display and a 2930mAh battery. It is expected to be available in 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB variants and rumored to be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 7872 processor.

Meizu Might Have Axed its MX Series of Smartphones

Meizu had launched the Meizu MX6 phone in July last year. Early rumors had suggested that the company could be working on Meizu MX7 to replace the older MX6 phone. The Chinese manufacturer has now removed the listing of Meizu MX6 from the official website as well as its official store. Since the Chinese firm is working on the Meizu 15 Plus as the 15th anniversary phone, it is speculated that the next major phone from the company will not be a Meizu’s MX series phone.

Currently, the Meizu MX6 is only available for purchase on Jingdong. The retailer is selling the Champagne Gold version of the phone with a price tag of 1,299 Yuan. It has been over a year since the launch of the MX6 and there is no trace of an upcoming Meizu MX series phone. Hence, the rumor mill is speculating that the company may have axed the MX lineup completely. We advise our readers to take this report with a grain of salt as the company is yet to official announce the axing of the MX series.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 To Pack Snapdragon 632 Processor And 4GB RAM

Contrary to previous reports which suggested that there will be no Redmi Note 5 phone, we now have the first look at the Redmi Note 5 smartphone, which is currently being tested internally by the China-based company.

The phone is expected to be launched officially by the company in the second half of the year. Interestingly, it is said to be powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 632 processor, which has not been announced yet. The Redmi Note 5 will be the first phone to be powered by Snapdragon 632 SoC.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is expected to feature a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It will carry on the trend of full-screen display with minimal bezels surrounding the display. Recently, Xiaomi jumped the full-screen display bandwagon with the launch of Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.

The Snapdragon 632 processor, which will be powering this upcoming smartphone, will reportedly be a toned-down version of the Snapdragon 636 processor from Qualcomm. Its clock speed will be reduced to around 1.8GHz and the accompanying GPU will also take a hit. However, it will come with better support and optimisation for dual camera setup.

As of the memory option, the smartphone will have 4GB RAM. While the internal storage of the device is not yet known, we are expecting it to be 64GB, with support for expanding storage capacity through microSD card. Coming to the camera, the phone will have a dual camera setup at the back, featuring two 12-megapixel sensors.

Earlier, there were reports suggesting that the China-based smartphone manufacturer won’t be launching Redmi Note 5. It was said that the Redmi Note 4’s successor will be the full-screen Redmi 5 Plus which already launched last month.

Apple Files Patent Application For Long-Range Wireless Charging With Power Scheduling

Apple has filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office which aims to solve the problem of long-range wireless charing. However, there is also one more addition to the proposed solution — power scheduling.

As usual, the patent application filed by Apple has the wordings as general as possible – encompassing both wired and wireless charging. However, the company’s focus is clearly on the long-range wireless charging.

Along with providing long-range wireless charging solution, the patent also describes an unique power scheduling system that enables users to set up wireless charging transfers in a particular order. For example, you can set your iPhone to get the power first, followed by iPad and then the Apple Watch.

Apple Long-Range Wireless Charing Patent

This long-range wireless charging system from Apple is similar to that of Energous’ WattUp — a ‘power-at-a-distance’ wireless charging system, which was recently approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). However, the solution from Energous lacks the power scheduling feature.

The patent application from Apple notes that it is “configured to wirelessly transmit power over the wireless power transfer link.” The summery of the patent says that the “system may have a power adapter with multiple ports for supply power.”

The company has said that the electronic devices for charging purposes may include devices such as cellular telephones, wristwatch devices, laptop computers, and tablet computers. Further, it adds that the power adapter may supply power using wired links and wireless links.

Apple has filed two patent — one deals with scheduling for a truly wireless charger while the other explores hiding wireless charging equipment inside other structures, such as enclosures, furniture, vehicles, etc. The first patent was filed on June 9, 2017, and the second was filed on June 1, 2017. While both application were published a couple of days ago, neither of them have received approval.

OnePlus 5 Receives Face Unlock Through OxygenOS Open Beta 3

One of the most revolutionary features of the new OnePlus 5T is Face Unlock, a method of authentication through face recognition. A new Open Beta of OxygenOS has just rolled out, and now even OnePlus 5 received the innovative Face Unlock feature. The update can be downloaded only by OP5 users who registered for beta testing and it’s around 1.6GB in size. If you are one of these users, we suggest you download the new Open Beta 3 through a Wi-Fi connection in order to save your data.

OnePlus 5

Face Unlock is a similar feature to Face ID which is present on the new Apple iPhone X, but unlike Face ID it only works via software. By using the front camera, OnePlus 5 can now recognize the face of its owner and unlock the phone in 0.4 seconds. Face Unlock is even faster than Face ID, but it is less safe and the company has already admitted that it is not suitable to be used for mobile payments and other important things which need security. According to Carl Pei (the CEO of the company), there was a really strong demand for this feature, so the company has decided to follow the feedbacks of its community and implement the feature on the OP5 as well.

Face Unlock is not the only change implemented in the Open Beta 3 for the OnePlus 5. Among other changes, there is a fix for the 5G band in the Wi-Fi connection and there are also optimizations for vibration. A new app shortcut has been added to the Launcher and a new security patch has been included as well. It is the December security patch, which is the latest one released by Google (the next one will come in a few days as new security patches get released every month). For people who adhered to the beta testing phase, the update comes via OTA.

Live Photo of Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra Surfaces, Sports Dual Front Cameras

Sony’s upcoming mid-range phone, the Xperia XA2 Ultra has appeared in a leaked photo. The photo reveals a number of details, but the key being the design which……is more or less the same as last year’s.

Xperia XA2 Ultra live photo

The Xperia XA2 Ultra keeps the huge bezels of its predecessor, the XA1 Ultra, although the lower one is a bit smaller. GFXBench says the display is 6.0” with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so expect this phone to be big. There are a few new additions though.

First, the XA2 Ultra now packs dual front facing cameras positioned at opposite sides. One of the cameras is a 16MP sensor but the other isn’t known yet. The phone still has a front LED flash which now sits on the left side of the bezel.

Another change in the design is the absence of a cut-out at the base. The XA1 Ultra has a slit on the lower bezel that made one think it has stereo speakers but it was just there for design purposes. Now, that it is gone, we can presume that the XA2 Ultra won’t be getting stereo speakers either.

The photo shows the “About Phone” under the settings menu. As we can see, the model number is H4233 which confirms this is indeed the Xperia XA2 Ultra. It is running Android 8.0.0 Oreo and has November’s security patch installed.

OnePlus Switch is An App That Makes Moving To A OnePlus Phone Easy

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ With Very Narrow Bezels Show Up In New Renders

New S9 renders have surfaced, and they are not the first showing us the design of Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, the upcoming flagships from the Korean giant at the first place in the global smartphones market. The new leak confirms what we have seen before: in terms of design, S9 and S9 Plus will be just a slight upgrade over their predecessors S8 and S8+. We can see the standard version of the upcoming flagships, which will also be the cheapest one, on both the front and the back side, while S9 Plus only appears on its front side.

According to the new renders surfaced on Weibo, the design of Samsung Galaxy S9 will be very similar to the Galaxy S8, but the screen-to-body ratio will be even higher. The display will be curved, with almost absent bezels on the sides and very narrow bezels on the upper and lower part. The front panel is exactly the same on both the devices (S9 Plus is just bigger), and we can also notice a 3.5 mm audio jack on the lower border. It is possible to see a volume rocker and a power key on the left side, and an alleged Bixby physical key on the right one.

The rear side of Samsung Galaxy S9 shows a single camera, while S9+ is expected to come with a dual camera setup in a vertical configuration. Under the camera, there is a fingerprint reader, while on the right there is a LED flash and an autofocus laser sensor. Galaxy S9 and S9+ have already been certified in the U.S. by FCC and according to rumors, they will be officially unveiled this week at CES 2018, in Las Vegas. The handsets will be equipped with the Snapdragon 845 SoC for the U.S. version and Samsung Exynos 9810 for the European one. We still do not have info about their prices.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium 2 Concept Renders: Shows Off Dual Rear Cameras & Full-Screen Display

Sony is set to change the design of its phones this year. There is no confirmation yet if it will cut across all models, but we at least expect the flagships to be among. One of them is the Xperia XZ Premium 2 whose renders have surfaced online.

Xperia XZ Pemium 2

The Xperia XZ Premium was one of the first Snapdragon 835 phones announced last year though it didn’t go on sale until much later due to availability of the Snapdragon 835 chip. Its successor is the Xperia XZ Premium 2 and it has an entirely different look in these renders made by Concept Creator.

First, the bezels have been greatly reduced to make way for the tall display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Even with the smaller bezels, the phone still sports dual front facing speakers. Although, instead of the slits we are familiar with, they are circular holes cut into the bezels.

On the rear, the phone does look like its covered in metal, but judging from the design of its predecessor, it is most likely glass. Notwithstanding, there is a big change on the rear and that is the dual rear cameras arranged in a vertical position.

And just like the XZ Premium, the Premium 2 has a USB-C port at the bottom and a 3.5mm audio jack at the top.

In the previous week, a new issue had surfaced on Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Its users are complaining that they are unable to charge the phone once its battery comes down to 0 percent. Not only the users of Galaxy Note 8 are facing this issue, but also the owners of Galaxy S8 and S8+ are encountering this problem. In an official statement, Samsung has said that only few users have encountered the issue and it can only comment on it after more users come across it.

After the debacle of Galaxy Note 7, Samsung has been using a strict procedure to check the quality and performance of the batteries of its devices. Unlike the issue on the Note 7, the battery related problem that has appeared on the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8 do not seem to be a hazardous problem. However, the South Korean tech giant is in the process of investigating the issue.

Preliminary reports claim that the issue could be associated only with the carrier variants of the affected phones in the U.S. Samsung is selling the Snapdragon edition of the aforementioned flagship phones through the U.S. carriers. However, it could not be confirmed whether the Snapdragon models are the only ones that are affected.

According to Samsung, only a few customers have complained about the issue. The company claims that only when it receives more information about the affected devices, it will be able to comment on it and find a proper solution for the problem. Here is the official statement:

“Of course, Samsung is taking all reports of this kind seriously, we only received a very small number of customer inquiries that could be linked to charge management, and unfortunately we can only comment on the matter further if we have more detailed information about the affected devices.”

Users who are facing this issue are advised to contact Samsung’s customer support department. One of the representatives from the company has suggested users on the official forum site to seek a replacement device if their S8, S8+ or Note 8 have bricked after the batter was completely exhausted. As of this writing, there is no confirmation on whether the company is sending out replacement units.
