Razer Unveils a New Laptop With Three Screens Dubbed Project Valerie

Razer has garnered a reputation for developing gaming laptops and they are not new to making headlines at CES. The company has today announced a new concept laptop that it tagged Project Valerie. This new concept laptop is unique not just for its sturdy hardware but for the fact that it comes with not one, not two but three displays.

raze project valerie

The Project Valerie may likely tow the line of Project Fiona, its earlier concept laptop that later came out as Razer Edge. As for the specs and hardware, each of the three displays measures 17.3 inches in size and they all have 4K resolution each. The two side displays retract and deploy from behind the central display automatically and they align side by side to create a 180-degree viewing area. The implication of this is that they all don’t show one image unlike other display connections. Rather you get a continuous display as if it’s all on one display.

Project Valerie

This awesome ability is powered by NVIDIA’s Surround View technology, which enables programs to spread a single image across multiple monitors. Also there are no issues of wires clogging up as the screens retract and deploy because all the wiring are internal.

Razer Project Valerie

Curiously, Razer left much to our imagination as they didn’t disclose much about the specs like the processor, GPU and memory. They did disclose, though, that the Project Valerie uses an all-aluminum case and Razer’s short-throw keyboard suitable for hard core gaming. Also the device has a hardware lineup suited to meet the requirements for using HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with it. As stated earlier, Project Valerie is a concept gadget and so may not see the light of day, just like many products that would be unveiled at CES 2017. Except the product is received with los of enthusiasm and backing, then we might just see the device materializing into a consumer product.

Xiaomi Announces the Modular Mi TV 4 That’s Just 4.9mm Thin!

For the first time, Xiaomi was present at CES today held in Las Vegas. This was naturally a big milestone for the company as well as its fans and a big platform for the Chinese smartphone company to announce new products. As expected, the Xiaomi Mi Mix did get a white version, which to be precise is a pearl white version. But along with this new color, Xiaomi announced two new products, the Xiaomi Mi TV 4 and the Xiaomi Mi Router HD. Here we talk about the brand new and interesting Mi TV 4.

mi tv 4 frameless design

First of all, continuing with its tradition, the 65-inch Xiaomi Mi TV 4 will feature a modular design. So, the motherboard, sound system, and the large display are three separate components which can be replaced separately. This is indeed an innovative design making sure that you don’t have to shell out a lot of money to upgrade your smart TV. Just replacing the motherboard with a smarter one is enough to bring your TV up to date.

mi tv 4 modular design

But we have already seen modular TV’s from Xiaomi before. What’s really interesting about the Mi TV 4 is its super sleek metal body. The TV comes with a 4.9mm body, that’s thinner than most of the smartphones that are in the market. Its sleek metal body looks elegant in the pictures and even in real life (the TV was shown off during the event). But just being sleek is not enough, so Xiaomi decided to make the TV frameless as well. The combination of a sleek body and a frameless display indeed makes it very beautiful. The company has even thought about those who don’t want to fix the TV onto a wall. The Mi TV 4 comes with a transparent stand to blend well with the background for unobtrusive viewing.

Then there’s the Patchwall software, which is a deep learning AI system embedded right into the TV’s OS. What this basically does is give out the most relevant suggestions for you. Different users will get different suggestions based on their likes and dislikes and Hugo Barra even went on to say “it’s a substantial improvement over any current content UI”. Some of the highlighted features of software include smart sizing i.e. the size of the recommendation tile will be based on its level of relevancy, infinite recommendations scrolling etc.

mi tv 4 price

For sound, the Mi TV 4 comes with 10 speakers right inside the Mi TV Bar, 2 other satellite speakers, and a subwoofer. It is also the first Xiaomi TV to come with the Dolby Atmos Sound support.

All this for under $2000, which is an impressive price tag. There are two other sizes available, 49-inch and 55-inch.

Now is the time to reveal its release date and shipping details. This is the funny part. Xiaomi announced and showed its new Mi TV 4 in Las Vegas today, but it didn’t mention any details about its shipping in the US. It’s confirmed to be coming to China later this year, but for fans who were waiting for a US launch of a major Xiaomi product, their wait continues….

Check out a couple more pictures of the Mi TV 4 below.

LG Confirms That The LG G6 Won’t Be Modular

When LG launched the G5 last year, it released a couple of accessories it called the LG G5 Friends. Two of the G5 Friends the CAM Plus and Hi-Fi Plus with B&O Play are actually modules which you can add to your phone to expand its functionality. The LG G5 can be said to be the first major phone to take a stab at modularity and sadly it failed terribly. LG has learnt it’s lesson and will not be repeating that mistake with the LG G6.

LG G5

According to a LG spokesman, the Korean company will be ”scaling back the modularity” for it’s next flagship which is launching this year. Feedback from users about the company’s take on modularity has prompted it to make this decision and sincerely it’s in the best interest if they do not want their sales to drop further.

LG will instead focus on the overall design of G6. Some of the rumors we have heard about the upcoming phone include it sporting a unibody design with a non-removable battery and the retaining of the 3.5mm audio jack.

True Contactless Wireless Charging Coming Our Way Later in 2017, Courtesy of Energous

We all love to have our gadgets work for us whenever we need them but these batteries that can’t last forever just won’t allow us do that. Again, using a charging cable to fuel up the battery also pose its own challenge, most especially limiting our movement to a particular radius if you actually want to keep it charging and still operating the gadget. That is where wireless charging comes in handy, but we still haven’t got a truly wireless charging device that can charge multiple gadgets all at the same time and don’t need any wire at all or charging pad.

wattup wire-free charging technology

US-based tech company Energous had promised to make its truly wireless charging device dubbed WattUp wire-free charging technology that would charge all our gadgets but that promise is yet to materialize till now. However, Energous CEO Steve Rizzone, in a phone call to Verge ahead of CES, has reaffirmed that the wireless charging transmitters is still in the works and that it might start shipping by the end of 2017.

The charging transmitter was first unveiled at CES 2015 and was supposed to ship that same year, but according to the CEO, Energous signed a “key strategic partnership” just a month after the convention, leading to a renewed focus on miniaturizing the technology before shipping it. The partnership gave Energous’ mystery partner the right to be the first to ship its charging technology inside of phones, laptops, tablets, and certain wearables and accessories, so Energous’ initial plan for battery phone cases had to be put on hold.

There are speculations that the mystery partner is Apple and even though Energous is yet to disclose the identity of its partner, the CEO lent credence to the speculations by hinting that the partnership is with “one of the largest consumer electronic companies in the world. I cannot tell you who it is, but I can virtual guarantee that you have products from this company on your person, sitting on your desk, or at home.”

If truly Apple is the key partner, then chances are that we might really be seeing the WattUp Wire-Free charging technology before the end of this year. Don’t jump up for joy just yet, the technology still has a long way to go before it get wider accessibility. First, devices have got to support the technology and then there will be a transmitter that would be installed in every home or office where the devices can then be connected to the transmitter. Moreover, the company has said it isn’t manufacturing any of the gadgets itself rather it will sell the radios and technology to companies that are interested in having them in their own gadgets, transmitters, or charging pads. So, it is still doubtful whether we’ll see devices charging wirelessly this year. Perhaps, its is still a technology for the future?

Real image of Samsung Galaxy S8 Leaks: Tough Competition for Xiaomi Mi MIX

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is going to play a major role in helping Samsung salvage a large chunk of its reputation. While the whole world is eager to know and see what Samsung is planning, the company is trying its possible best to prevent further details from leaking. But we do not think it’s recording much success as what is said to be a real image of the upcoming phone surfaced online recently.

The image is of a Samsung phone with gold chrome bezels that are considerably smaller than what you have on the S7 and S7 Edge. The physical home button is also absent and the display is curved on both sides. It doesn’t look like the S8 could get any realer than this and Xiaomi’s Mi MIX better prepare for some competition.

Galaxy S8 Real Image

Rumors going round say the Galaxy S8 will feature 8GB of RAM which is double that of last year’s flagships; and also have UFS 2.1 storage. There is also mention of it being available in two sizes: a 5-inch variant and a larger 6-inch model presumed to be called the Galaxy S8 Plus and probably aimed at fans of the Galaxy Note series.

The image above shares some design similarities to a render( below) that was leaked earlier although we would have loved this leak more if it were black.

Samsung usually announces its flagship during Mobile World Congress but this year is going to be different. It is expected to delay it further by a couple of months and hold a separate launch event for it in New York.

The US Version of The Huawei Mate 9 Will Have Amazon’s Alexa

The Huawei Mate 9 was released last year in Europe first before making it to its home country in China. A spokesperson revealed that it will be heading to US markets soon. But that’s just half of the good news as the source also added that the US version will be getting an Alexa update.

Amazon’s Alexa is having an amazing year already with so many 3rd party manufacturers launching devices with the assistant baked in. An example is the Lenovo Smart Assistant that not only has the AI companion but also shares design similarities to the Echo. Now Huawei is joining the Alexa train not with the Honor 6X that was just launched in the US but with the flagship Mate 9.

huawei mate 9

Amazon Alexa

This is good news for both parties. First for Huawei, as it will give the Mate 9 a huge boost in sales; and for Amazon, since this is an opportunity for Alexa to be integrated into phones seeing as the Amazon Fire Phone was not a success.

Quite a number of Americans already have Alexa in their homes via the Echo, Tap, and Dot speakers but the Mate 9 puts it in their pockets.

The Huawei Mate 9 has a 5.9-inch display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage; a 2.4GHz Kirin 960 SoC; dual rear cameras (20MP+12MP) wit OIS, optical zoom, and laser focus; an 8MP front facing shooter; rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a 4000mAh battery with Supercharge.  The Mate 9 also ships with Android Nougat out of the box.

HTC One X10 Real Live Render Leaks

HTC released a teaser announcing the impending launch on January 12 of a device that belongs to its U series. The teaser just contained the words “for U”, with the letter “U” made extra bold. At first we had thought the device was the HTC One X10 but then on closer scrutiny it certainly isn’t. But the HTC One X10 will launch sometime in Q1 2017, according to popular tipster Eva Bass (@evleaks).

HTC One X10

Apart from revealing the HTC One X10 will launch in Q1 2017, the tipster also posted a leaked real live render of the smartphone. From the renders, it can be gathered that the HTC One X10 will not come with a physical home button but has virtual buttons which would function as home key, back button and quick app launcher. At the rear, there is a unique straight line antenna band which runs at the top and bottom edges. The rear camera sits centrally while the LED flash is located by the side of the camera. The X10 also has a rear mounted fingerprint sensor located under the rear camera. The power button and volume rocker are located at the right side of the phone.

The HTC One X10 will take over the rein from last year’s 5.5-inch One X9 phablet and it is just slightly different from its predecessor. The device is also expected to feature a 5.5-inch display with FHD resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels). Powering the device will be a MediaTek Helio P10 chipset with octa-core processor and a clock frequency of 2GHz. The graphics will be fired up by a Mali-T860 GPU clocking at 700 MHz. The X10 is also expected to pack 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM onboard as well as a 16.3MP rear camera with OIS and a 7.9MP front camera.

Xiaomi Mi 6 May No Longer Start at ¥1999 ($300) Due to High Cost of Materials

The high cost of materials has started to affect the price of electronics in China. Earlier this week we reported that Xiaomi has increased the price of two of its Mi TV models. News going round now is that the Xiaomi Mi 6 will also be affected and will sell for a higher price when it launches.

Xiaomi flagships usually have a starting price of ¥1999 ($300) for the base model and increases as the specifications moves up but this year’s Xiaomi Mi 6 may start at ¥2499 ($370), and trust re-sellers to even jack the price up further.

OPPO R9S New Year Anniversary Edition Unboxing Images: Red is Hot

The OPPO R9S was released in October of 2016 as a successor to the OPPO R9 (OPPO F1 Plus) released in March of the same year. When the phone was launched, it was available in three color variants: Gold, Rose Gold, and Black, but OPPO has announced a new color variant. Like I’ve said before, releasing new color variant for a phone is like launching the phone afresh and that’s what OPPO is doing.

The company has released a red variant of the OPPO R9S and they are calling it the New Year Anniversary Edition. This new edition is no different from the Yang Mi Special Edition save for the lack of the Actress’ signature.

OPPO R9S New Year Special Edition OPPO R9S New Year Special Edition

It still sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, a Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of built-in storage and the same 16MP camera in front and on the rear. The battery is no different at 3010mAh, there is a fingerprint scanner up front, and you still get dual SIM support.

However, it looks way nicer than the other colors. The antenna lines are more visible now that they are coated black but that doesn’t make it look less beautiful in any way. Alhough the phone is red, all the accessories are white.

The New Year Anniversary Edition of the OPPO R9S will go on sale on the 11th of January for ¥2,7999 ($416). We hope OnePlus eventually releases a red or green variant of the OP3/OP3T soon.

Xiaomi to Announce a Product More Revolutionary Than the Mi Mix at CES 2017?

China’s innovative tech company Xiaomi is making its debut on CES this year and the company looks set to take on the international scene using CES 2017 as a spring board. Xiaomi had hinted last year, when it announced it would be participating in CES 2017, that it would release an innovative product that illustrates how it is pushing the boundaries of innovation.

xiaomi

Earlier on also, the company’s VP Hugo Barra had announced they would be releasing  a product during the tech show. The company also released series of teasers that gave clues as to the product expected. There are indications, however, that the company is planning a more revolutionary product than the Mi Mix. The Xiaomi Mix revolutionize the idea of bezel-less smartphone that was hitherto thought to be impossible to mass produce. But Xiaomi is touting that they have more exciting products in their arsenal.

xiaomi-ces-2017

No doubt the company is built around innovation and it is very likely that there might be more than one product coming. The Xiaomi TV Weibo page re-shared a poster publicizing the launch event and then added that perhaps a new Xiaomi TV may be coming as well. So, perhaps a new Xiaomi TV may be one of the upcoming product. There are rumors of a white Xiaomi Mix in the works, and Xiaomi is even conducting a poll to know which one fans prefer and surprisingly, the result so far show the white Mi Mix is preferred by most of the respondents.

There is the likelihood of a new software product also coming as the company also shared the image of a smartphone running two different OS at the same time. The company had also announced that it would be launching the Yi Erida drone and Yi 4K action camera at CES 2017. The launch event is scheduled for tomorrow 6th January at 3 pm and Xiaomi has hinted that it would be broadcast live on several channels in China including Xiaomi TV.

Get the Meizu MX6 for just $275.99 from Lightinthebox!

Meizu is known for producing high-quality smartphones for a low price and the MX6 is one of the best examples. The phone was released back in July and the prices have dropped quite significantly to less than $300. Now you can grab it for just  $275.99 from lightinthebox.com and we believe it is a pretty good deal.

screenshot-2017-01-05-09-09-48

When it comes to hardware, the Meizu MX6 comes with the Mediatek Helio x20 chip, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which is, however, not expandable. Even though the Helio X20 chip is not the most powerful out there, it can still handle a lot of stuff without any issues.

screenshot-2017-01-05-09-09-33

I’m not going to talk about the similarities with the iPhone 7 and I’ll just say that the phone sports excellent build quality. The Mx6 is made entirely of metal, even the top and bottom parts. In addition, there are nicely-designed antenna inlays.

ywuxyc1479720373611-3

Finally, the phone has a 12MP Sony camera with f/2.0 aperture and a dual tone dual-led flash.

You can now grab the phone for just $275.99 from Lightinthebox, which sounds like a pretty good deal knowing the overall package you get and the quality of Meizu smartphones.

Kehan Cubecam Review

We usually use action cameras to capture some great moments on the go, without the need to use the DSLRs or the phone’s camera. However, the pocket cameras are even smaller and sometimes they may be more convenient to use. We came across the Kehan Cubecam that is one of the smallest cameras you can find. Learn more in our full review.

UNBOXING

20161111_135923 20161111_140006

In the box, you can find all the stuff you need to get started: instruction manuals, USB cable and a clasp that allows you to attach the camera to your clothes or other objects.

DESIGN and FEATURES

20161111_140354

When it comes to the design, Kehan Cubecam is made of a quality plastic material and the surface has a textured finish.

20161111_140406

The camera sensor has not been specified by manufacturer but it has the aperture of F/ 2.5 and 120˚FOV.

20161111_140302 20161111_140312

On the top, there is a shutter key, which has a built-in dual-color LED flash.

20161111_140232

On the left, you can find a power on/off switch, which also doubles as a wifi button. Right next to it, we have the mode button, which simply allows you to switch from picture taking to video shooting modes.

20161111_140324

20161111_140246

Finally, we have a microSD card slot and the micro USB port.

FUNCTIONALITY

20161111_140302

Using the camera is very simple. You just select the mode and click the shutter button. The later button will be blinking to indicate the video recording.

Since the Kehan Cubecam does not have a display, connecting it to your phone is a great idea if you want to frame your shot.

In order to do that, you have to download the Kehan app, which is pretty simple to use but it seems that it is not in its final version since there are some bad English translations and not too many features. Within the app, you can adjust some settings and choose from different shooting modes. Also, you can adjust the resolution. One of the key features is the live streaming mode. However, I could not make it work no matter how hard I tried.

IMAGE QUALITY

When it comes to the image quality, it is underwhelming. In fact, it is even worse than most of the cheap action cameras that are half the price. The images lack in detail, sharpness, there is a ton of noise etc.

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3UYNOgmMx8[/embedyt]

The camera shoot videos at 1080/15fps, which is makes the footage unusable for me. Therefore, I suggest you going with 720p (it is even recommended by Kehan to use it).

Still, the video quality does not impress. Most importantly, the files are saved in .rec file format, which is rarely used. Even the VLC player could not play it. All my attempts to convert the videos to .MP4 files failed.

BATTERY LIFE

20161111_140339

When it comes to the battery life, I was able to use the camera for just above 90 mins, which is way less than manufacturer’s claims of 2.5h of continuous use.

CONCLUSIONS

20161111_140559

The Kehan Cubecam is a tiny, lightweight and one of the tiniest cameras I’ve tested. The idea of it seems nice but the implementation is far from perfect.

Sure, the Cubecam does most of the things it is being advertised for but both image and video quality disappoints. Also, the battery life is not as good as advertised.

20161111_140212

Finally, for the price of $99 it seems a bit too pricey for what it offers and some cheap action cameras may be a better buy, even though they are not as compact as the Cubecam.

ZTE Hawkeye is ZTE’s Crowdsourced Smartphone, Now Up For Pre-order at $199

Few months back, ZTE decided to go in the direction of crowd-sourcing funds for its smartphone project. Xiaomi has successfully been exploiting that avenue in China to release a barrage of smarthome products. But ZTE’s model was initiated on Kickstarter in the US and is labelled Project CSX. Now, ZTE has used the opportunity of CES 2017 to unmask the device and it goes by the name- ZTE Hawkeye.

ZTE Hawkeye

Aptly named Hawkeye, the phone prides in its visual ease it brings to the table. First of all, the phone has a adhesive body that can stick on a wall, glass and other surfaces, thus allowing the user some level of hands free operation. The adhesive back may be in form of a removable casing in the long run, so you get to remove it when it is not needed. Even if it turns out to be in form of a casing, it won’t remove a bit from the cool design we see on the device.

ZTE Hawkeye

More amazing is the Senseye feature which allows you to scroll down and navigate through websites on the phone by eye movement. The Senseye uses the front camera to track the eye motion and then translate it to a software command like scrolling up, down, left or right. It is accurate at up to three lines.

ZTE Hawkeye

The phone is still a work in progress as the company has not fixed a date when it would be officially launched. But in line with Xiaomi’s crowdfunding pattern, the ZTE Hawkeye is up for pre-order, apparently in a bid to rake in more funds for final mass production. The pre-order is ongoing on Kickstarter and the price is just $199. That might likely be a price tag for the early birds , so it is not certain if that would be the final price on launch day.

ZTE Hawkeye

There is a dearth of details about the specifications and features of the Hawkeye but at least we know what the device looks like now and a few specs have popped up on the Crowdsourcing website. What we also know is that the ZTE Hawkeye sports a rear mounted fingerprint sensor in addition to other features that are not yet revealed. Sure, we are likely to get a decent chip, RAM size and storage capacity on the device, considering the Senseye software feature already inside.

ZTE Hawkeye

According to the details, the ZTE Hawkeye sports a 5.5-inch FHD display and dual rear cameras with enhanced image and zoom capabilities. It is a dual SIM smartphone that supports multiple bands, meaning it is already unlocked for use anywhere in the world. The device is also touted to pack a large battery with quick charging capabilities. There is also a Hi-Fi audio on the device as well as an expandable memory. The size of the memory isn’t revealed yet, as well as the processor onboard. The device runs the latest Android 7.0 Nougat OS and it is upgradable to the latest version when available.

ZTE Hawkeye

Already, three different colors have been spotted which includes black, blue and green but since it is likely going to use a plastic finish, the final colors might be broadened in the long run. Even at just the three colors exhibited, the Hawkeye looks quite attractive, with a design that heralds ZTE’s ability to design sleek, beautiful handsets, all for just $199 USD. You can check out the video teaser from down below showing how the Senseye and adhesive features work. Also, do follow Gizmochina’s CES 2017 Hub for latest CES 2017 update.

Blackberry Mercury Hands-on Images

Blackberry Mercury had popped into the scene a couple of months back, with leaked renders showing the design of the device. We didn’t get to see or hear anything about the specs of the Blackberry smartphone back then. Although we are still yet to get an official disclosure of the specification of the Blackberry flagship device, hands-on images of the device have surface at CES 2017 and we are bringing it to you thanks to Android Central.

blackberry mercury

It is likely that Blackberry will launch this as its last device before TCL takes the rein, having gotten license to produce and sell Blackberry phones globally. It’s not as if TCL is new to the Blackberry project, though. In actual fact, earlier Blackberry DTEK phones like the DTEK 50 and DTEK 60 were rebranded Alcatel Idol phones. TCL also owns the Alcatel brand.

blackberry dtek 70

A look at the images shows that the device code-named Mercury will indeed come with a QWERTY keyboard. So those who still cherish the physical keyboard will fall in love with this one. The design isn’t bad looking either, adopting a somewhat curved display and a thin build. While the edges are well chamfered at the bottom, it is sharp at the top. It has a rectangular shape which is long on the axis due to the physical keyboard but in its entirety, the device is smaller than a 5.5-inch device. The screen is even smaller, robbed off its size by the physical keyboard. Although Blackberry is yet to say the display size, earlier rumor places it at a meager 4.5 inches.

blackberry dtek 70

Despite the presence of a physical button, the display is a touchscreen one. There are three virtual capacitive keys at the bottom of the screen, one of which would be the home button. There is a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the space bar button on the QWERTY keyboard and it is likely it holds other security features aside unlocking the device.

Blackberry Mercury

At the rear, the back is said to have a soft feel which very likely isn’t made from metal. The rear camera is tilted to the left top edge of the device with the dual-tone LED flash sitting by its side.

Blackberry Mercury

On the software terrain, the Blackberry Mercury runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box and will be Blackberry’s first device to do so when it is launched. Apart from that, nothing else is known about other software features the phone will come with as well as the hardware features we are to expect. Blackberry is also yet to disclose a launch date or pricing detail for the device but it is likely to drop around MWC 2017 which starts next month in Barcelona.

Other features that can be spotted on the Blackberry Mercury hands-on images include a USB Type-C charging port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and what looks like a down-facing set of speakers. On the left side is the power button, while the volume rocker sits at the right side just above the convenience key.

Blackberry Mercury

As a recap, the Blackberry Mercury is rumored to launch powered by the Snapdragon 821 chipset and come with a 4.5-inch 1080 pixels display . The flagship is also expected to cram a large battery touted to last up to 2 days of regular usage.
