The Snapdragon 652 LeEco Le 2 Gets a Price Cut, Now ¥899 ($130)

Scandal aside, LeEco has made some pretty great and affordable phones. One of them is the LeEco Le 2 which comes in two variants: a Helio X20 variant and a Snapdragon 652 variant; and is also one of the first phones in the world to ditch the audio jack.

LeEco Le 2

Released back in April for ¥1099 (~$160), the Le 2 has a 5.5” FHD display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 16MP f/2.0 main camera, and an 8MP front facing shooter. There is a 3000mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 support, a fingerprint scanner, and an IR blaster.

The price of the Snapdragon variant of the Le 2 has been slashed down by ¥200 (~$29) and you can now pick it up for just ¥899 (~$130), which is not bad as long as you can live with its lack of an audio jack. Actually, you won’t find any phone with 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 652 chip for $130.

Samsung Galaxy C5 Pro and C7 Pro will Hit Shelves in January

Samsung launched the Galaxy C Series back in the middle of the year as a sort of high mid-range line for the Asian market. The Samsung C5 and C7 were the first devices under the new line which has gone ahead to include the company’s first 6GB RAM phone, the C9 Pro. Today we have learnt that the company wants to add the Galaxy C5 Pro and Galaxy C7 Pro to the mix.

C5 Pro and C7 Pro

The original Galaxy C5 and C7 both come with the same RAM (4GB) and ROM variants (32GB and 64GB). They also share the same camera specifications, band support, and HiFi audio technology. Where they differ is in the screen department: 5.2” for the C5 against 5.7” for the C7; the processor: a snapdragon 617 chip for the C5 and a Snapdragon 625 for the C7; and battery capacity: 2600mAh for the C5 and 3300mAh for the C7.

The C5 Pro and C7 Pro which were expected to launch this month have now been pushed to January and will be getting a chip upgrade in form of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor. They will also get a new 16MP camera with a f/1.7 aperture. Rumor also has it that the RAM might be bumped up to 6GB.

Both the Samsung Galaxy C5 Pro and C7 Pro will remain China exclusives and might be priced closely to the C9 Pro which sells for ¥3199 (~$470) presently. So much for mid-range, right?

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 Will Only Have A Curved Screen Variant

It appears curved screen phones will become mainstream starting next year following the report by a South Korean media. The news is that Samsung, who is technically the pioneer when it comes to curved displays will not be releasing a flat-screen version of it’s Galaxy S8 flagship next year.

According to the source, the tradition of releasing a flat-surfaced variant and a curved-screen edition of their flagship will not be continued next year. Instead the S8 will only be available as a curved-screen phone.

Does that mean there will only be one Samsung Galaxy S8? No, there will still be two, as the source goes on to say that the S8 will be available in two sizes. A 5.7-inch model and a 6.2-inch model!!!

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus

To be honest, a number of Samsung fans might not be happy with the new screen sizes. The S7 is a 5.1-inch phone and the Edge variant comes in at 5.5-inches. Quite a number of people like the small form factor of the S7 and would not be comfortable making a jump to 5.7-inches even though it will have a dual-curved display.

While we understand Samsung might be trying to make up for the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, they should not do that at the expense of those who are not fans of the note series.

What do you think about the S8 having only a curved-screen variant? Are you also happy that the screens will be getting pretty large?

Xiaomi Wi-Fi Amplifier 2 Launched, Priced At 49 Yuan ($7)

Xiaomi has quietly launched a new version of its Wi-Fi amplifier which comes as a potable USB dongle. The Xiaomi Wi-Fi Amplifier 2 is a built-in PCB antenna which has a doubled up signal strength than its predecessor. The transmission rate is also increased to 300Mbps and has the amazing capacity of taking connections from a maximum of 16 devices connected at the same time.

Xiaomi Wi-Fi Amplifier 2

Xiaomi routers have been a highly sought after product in the router business since it was first released. This is perhaps due to their cheap price tags, portability and durable price tags. The Amplifier which is connected to the router to boost reception also comes in as a useful and highly sought after gadget. That should be a major reason for the Wi-Fi Amplifier 2.

RelatedXiaomi Announces Total Mi Router Sales

One good thing about the Xiaomi Wi-Fi Amplifier 2, just like its predecessor, is that it doesn’t need to be connected only to the Xiaomi router but can be connected to routers manufactured by other third party manufacturers in the market. As for the price, the second gen Wi-Fi Amplifier is just 49 Yuan ($7) and would go on sale from December 15 at 10am.

Apple iPhone 8 Rumored To Feature a 5.2-inch OLED Display

There have been lots of rumors surrounding Apple’s 2017 flagship iPhone 8 of late, even though the device isn’t expected until autumn of next year. Recently rumors had hinted at the existence of four difference iPhone models with varying screen sizes which would be launched along side each other next year. In addition to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple is said to be working on iPhone 7S and 7S Plus and that all four would be launched together next year.

iphone 8

The latest development to that rumor is that the next generation Apple iPhone 8 would only come as a 5.2-inch display sporting device. The iPhone 8 is the only model of the four likely to have an OLED display which is touted as a Samsung flexible OLED panel. Although the panel is said to come in sizes ranging from 5.7 to 5.8 inches, but the proces of making the phone’s screen will see some of that will be cut off and also some part will be covered.

iphone 8

This doesn’t in anyway mean the iPhone 8 is Apple’s only mobile phone for next year which is a commemorative year. There is the iPhone 7S coming at 4.7-inches, iPhone 7S Plus at 5.5-inches and then the 5.2-inch iPhone 8, according to latest rumor.  The iPhone 8 Plus is conspicuously missing from this latest rumor. The iPhone 7S and 7S Plus are siad to be similar to previous gen iPhones with little change in appearance and would have a glass body and not aluminum alloy. An all glass body would mean Apple is jettisoning the bright black color variant on the 7S which is unlikely. We’ll like to believe the part that says the iPhone 7S would be a little cheaper, coming in at $150 to $200 less than the iPhone 8.

We can only take these rumors with a pinch of salt, though, while we make the long wait till next year.

New Video Teasers & Unofficial Renders of Faraday Future Electric Car Surface

Faraday Future, the tech start-up which is backed by LeEco has been on a releasing spree ahead of the official launch of its electric car in CES 2017. The company has released two video teasers already which teases the Faraday Future electric car and we can say the car is an SUV. Although  car is covered in a camouflage on the teasers, its seems to be a stunning looking one.

faraday-future-teaser

If you’d recall, the company had previously released some couple of images teasers that showed the front headlight and rear light design of the electric car. Now some designers seem to have used the available information at their disposal to churn out renders of the Faraday Future electric car which show the likely design and final looks of the car.

Faraday future electric car

The renders likely comes close to showing us what the car might look like on final release and it does look very promising. Although the LED headlight and rear light teased looked more like those of a concept car, the renders give us an idea of how they will fit into the car which is said to be production ready. The hood will also be short since it is electric and it has a stream-lined body with a coupe-like sloped roof apparently to help reduce wind drag which could in turn conserve power.

We all know that the Xiaomi has been on a roll as they released plenty of smartphones lately. However, you may still look at some older models released by the company as the prices have dropped significantly. The Mi 5 is one of those phones and currently Lightinthebox has it on sale for just $238.

The Xiaomi Mi5 is a beautiful and well-crafted device, and you will notice that as soon as you pick it up. One of the main highlights is a curved glass panel on the back. It not only looks great but also helps with the grip.

img_8313

img_8401

As for camera, we have a 16MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture, OIS, PDAF and dual tone dual-LED flash.

First Look at Meizu’s New Flyme 6 OS

Meizu announced the sixth iteration of its Flyme OS during the launch of the Meizu X phone. Although it is still in a closed beta stage, some early testers already have their hands on it and have decided to share some of the new features of the new Flyme 6 OS.

According to the testers, there is no much difference in the way the new Meizu OS looks. However there are lots of big changes in how it functions.

Flyme 6 Fingerprint Unlock

The first on the list is the new feature of the fingerprint scanner which unlocks the phone into any of three preset modes such as normal mode, guest mode, and privacy mode. What Meizu has done here is take advantage of the multiple fingerprints unlock feature and extra functionality. So you can register your left thumb to unlock the phone into guest mode; your left forefinger into private mode, and the right forefinger unlocks the phone into normal mode. There is still child mode included too and the option to hide apps.

Apple iPhone 8/8 Plus Will Feature a Dual-SIM Version Exclusive to China

Apple’s iPhone 8 (or iPhone 7s) is set to be the first iPhone to have a couple of features never seen on previous models. It will ditch the home button completely and sport an OLED display, and now new reports say it will be the first to have dual SIM slots.

apple-iphone-8-dual-sim

Yes, it seems Apple has seen the light, in China alone though, as the source says it will be a China exclusive. The news was broken a few hours ago on micro-blogging site, Weibo. While the new has not been confirmed yet, we want to believe it is true judging from a report back in October that said Apple filed two domestic patents related to dual SIM technology.

One of the patents (Patent Number: 2016101166075) is related to SIM selection and the other is related to power consumption for dual-SIM technology (Patent Number: 2016100813788). Both patents were submitted on February 5th and March 2nd 2016.apple-dual-sim-patent-2 apple-dual-sim-patent apple-iphone-8-dual-sim

It will be interesting to see how Apple’s first dual-SIM phone differs from that of other manufacturers. Will both SIMs support 4G LTE or will data connectivity be limited to one? What will also be the difference in price between a dual-SIM variant and a single SIM model? These are some of the questions on our list.

Official Photos of The Xiaomi Smart Electric Scooter

Early this morning, Xiaomi announced it’s newest device, a smart electric scooter that can cover up to 30km on a single charge and is priced at just ¥1999 (~$289) which is a great price.

This is not Xiaomi’s first foray into scooters. They already have a self-balancing scooter called the Ninebot Mini that costs more and does only 22km on a single charge.

The new scooter is available in two colors: black (more like grey) for those who like to maintain a quiet profile, and white for those who just love white. It weighs 12.5kg and can be folded to fit under your arm to lift up the stairs or tossed in the trunk of a car.

The black unit looks pretty nice with the little touches of red in places like the braking system which has E-ABS by the way. There is a white bell to alert pedestrians and other road users to move off your path and a headlamp in case you are going for a night ride.

The Dual-Curved Gionee M2017 Gets Boxing Day Launch

New releases are still coming from Chinese manufacturers even when the holiday season is very much upon us. As it appears, the employees at Gionee might not be getting the day off on Christmas and the day after too, since the company just announced that they will be launching their dual-curved phone, the Gionee M2017 on the 26th of December.

Gionee M2017 Launch

The Gionee M2017 is touted as a flagship aimed at professionals, businessmen and businesswomen. The launch is scheduled to take place at Mission Hills, Haikou and it seems it will be anchored by Movie Director, Feng Xiaogang whose wife, Xu Fan, is also a brand ambassador at Gionee.

Other specs already leaked says the Gionee M2017 will have a 5.7” screen with a Quad HD display, 6GB of RAM, an octa-core processor, dual rear-cameras, and a massive 7000mAh battery to keep you going through your busy schedule.

Xiaomi Mi 5C Listed on Jingdong (JD.com), Launching Soon?

Xiaomi Mi 5C has been fizzling in and out of the news radar for quite some time now. The device has now been listed on popular online mall Jingdong (JD.com) with a price tag of 9,999 Yuan which is very likely an error. This is a surprising one, though, and could only mean that the Mi 5C’s launch is perhaps imminent.

xiaomi mi 5c

According to the source, this is a third party listing and could be just to elicit our enthusiasm for the long expected Xiaomi smartphone. But then we never can tell, the Xiaomi Mi 5C could be launched very soon but not for 9999 Yuan. The device has previously been spotted on Taoboa listed with a 999 Yuan price tag ($144), so it is possible the Jingdong-listed 9999 Yuan price tag is an error. The device is speculated to fall into the 999 Yuan price category when launched considering the specs.

Renders of the device has featured in several leaks earlier showing us the sleek design of the Mi 5C which is code-named Xiaomi Meri. The Mi 5C comes with ultra-narrow bezels around the display and a sleek design overall. The device is also tipped to launch with Xiaomi’s own Pinecone processor. Other likely specs of the Mi 5C includes a 5.5-inch display with 2.5D curved glass, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 12MP rear camera and 8MP front-facing selfie shooter. The device will run on MIUI 8 based on Android Marshmallow.

Xiaomi Launches 1,999 Yuan ($239) Smart Electric Motor Scooter

Xiaomi has taken the wraps off its latest product which it teased last weekend as launching today. The product was thought to be an electric car but turns out the product is an electric motor scooter that is capable of traveling up to a distance of 30km before its battery dies. As is customary with Xiaomi products, the Xiaomi electric motor scooter comes cheap with a price tag of 1,999 Yuan ($239). The price is even cheaper than the $455 foldable electric bicycle that was launched not too long ago.

Xiaomi Electric Motor Scooter

The Xiaomi electric motor scooter comes with a minimalistic geometric design with an aircraft-grade aluminum body. The motor scooter weighs just 12.5kg despite packing an LG 18650 high security Lithium battery with 280Wh power which powers it. The device is portable and also foldable and can be coupled in just one minute.

Xiaomi Electric Motor Scooter

Taking a look at the features, the electric motor scooter comes with the front and rear wheels equipped with E-ABS (electronic anti-lock braking system) and the scooter has dual disc brake system which allows it to quickly come to a stop within a distance of 4 meters. The brakes also are efficient in addition to the quick response capability.

Xiaomi Electric Motor Scooter

Further, the electric scooter has a set of four LED indicators which tells the amount of battery power remaining. There is also an smart BMS battery management system onboard which can monitor the health status of each battery cell in real time and relay the information to the motor scooter’s main control system. The main control system can be synchronized with a mobile phone via an app such that the battery health can be viewed on the mobile. Where there is a problem, there are reminders so as to ensure safe driving.

Xiaomi Electric Motor Scooter

As stated earlier, the Xiaomi electric motor scooter will go on sale on December 15 at 10.00am via Mi mall, Mi Home, Xiaomi store, Lynx and Jingdong mall.

Yet Another New Set of Lenovo ZUK Edge Renders Leak

The Lenovo ZUK Edge smartphone should have been launched on December 7 as teased but quite surprisingly Lenovo went mute about the device. Now another set of renders of the device have leaked online showing once again the front view of the white colored variant, this time around while being charged.

lenovo ZUK Edge

The renders are similar to the previous ones which had featured in earlier leaks. The front physical home button still lies under the display and that is also rumored to have embedded under it a non-aperture fingerprint sensor. We are still short of renders of the back view of the device but the Edge’s appearance on TENAA did give us a glimpse of that.

zuk-edge-2

The Lenovo ZUK Edge should launch any moment from now considering December 7 has come and gone. Whenever it does launch, the device will likely feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor backed by 4GB of RAM. There will also be 64GB of internal storage as well as 3,000mAh built-in battery with fast charging support onboard the flagship. In addition, the device is touted to come with USB Type-C interface, an 8MP front camera, 13MP rear camera and many other cool features.

The ZUK Edge is also revealed with a likely price tag of 2,699 Yuan when it launches but all these will be confirmed when it is officially unveiled. For now, we don’t have any idea when the sleek device will be launched.

Sony Xperia Edge Concept Phone Design with Bezel-less Display Leaks

Since the Xiaomi Mi Mix concept phone pioneered the launch of phones with bezel-less display and high screen to body ratio exceeding 90%, there have been several other bezel-less phones shown to be in development like the Meizu concept phone, Huawei’s own concept device etc. But this Sony Xperia Edge concept phone design isn’t actually from Sony but is designed by designer Metti Farhang who shared it recently.

sony xperia edge

The design is said to be for a Sony device named Xperia Edge apparently because of its double curved-edge design. The concept device also comes with what is termed a triple bezel-less display with the screen edges at the top and sides having less design bezels but curving all the way to the rear. The device doesn’t seem to be curved at the bottom edge where there is a slight screen space that isn’t covered by the display. The device is designed with onscreen capacitive virtual buttons though, in typical Sony fashion.

sony-bezel-less-phone2

No doubt this draws comparison with the Xiaomi mi Mix already on sale and the Sharp Aquos Crystal that Japanese smartphone maker is said to be developing. The design seems to be smaller than the 6.4 inches the Mi Mix came and there is a dual camera setup at the rear which sits to one end of the phone’s rear.

We wouldn’t forget so soon that Huawei has a concept device up its sleeves dubbed Huawei Honor Magic that would utilise similar near bezel-less display, and a high screen-to-body ratio. Huawei’s own device is set for launch on December 16. The possibility that this Sony Xperia Edge concept phone design will fnd its way out is near zero since its not from the company.

Uhans A101S Review – A $70 Phone

Uhans A101S Review: UNBOXING

p1050216 p1050214

The phone ships with all the usual stuff and some extras include a screen protector and a soft TPU case.

Uhans A101S Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

p1040841

When it comes to the design, this cheap phone draws quite a bit of attention since my review unit comes in pink colour. You can also choose from other flashy colors.

p1050002

The phone does not sport any premium materials in the construction but it does not feel cheap either.

p1050077

The buttons are nice and tactile, the backplate is made of rubberized plastic material and the phone sits nicely in the hand.

20161210_111040

We have a 5” display, which has only 720p resolution but it is plenty sharp for everyday use.

20161210_111058

Also, there is a 5MP camera above the display but we don’t have neither LED notification light nor backlit capacitive keys.

p1050079

On the back, we have an 8MP Sony camera with a single LED flash.

p1050220 p1050221

You can remove the backplate to access the microSD card slot, two SIM card slots and a removable 2450mAh battery.

20161210_110940

The loudspeaker quality is like on most of the cheap phones. The sound is kind of flat.

Uhans A101S Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

p1050026

The Uhans A101S is not going to be your next flagship device but it still rocks solid specs for the price. The phone ships with the quad-core MTK6580 chip, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

The 3D gaming performance is pretty good. Asphalt 8 on medium graphics runs absolutely fine without any stutter.

Uhans A101S Review: BENCHMARKS

Uhans A101S Review: USER INTERFACE

When it comes to the user interface, Uhans A101S is all about the features and customization.

The Android 6.0-based UI offers you the ability to customize the phone using themes, wallpapers, various plugins and so on. You can also use some baked-in gesture and motion controls that work pretty well.

Last but not least, the phone is pretty fast on the daily basis and I believe this is the most important aspect on a cheap phone.

Uhans A101S Review: IMAGE QUALITY

You should not expect any stellar results from these cheap phones but the Uhans A101S can take some nice pictures that are usable for social media. Obviously, the color reproduction is off, there could be more detail but in general, the camera does a decent job for a $70 phone.

The video quality is kind of poor like on most of the cheap phones.

The selfie pictures will definitely do the trick for social media.

Download full resolution camera samples

Uhans A101S Review: CONNECTIVITY

p1050028

I didn’t have any major connectivity issues. The GPS works okay but it could be slightly more accurate.

Uhans A101S Review: BATTERY LIFE

p1050049

The removable 2450mAh battery allows you to use the phone for quite a bit of time. I was able to get over 4.5h of screen-on time on a mixed usage of the phone, which is a pretty good result.

Uhans A101S Review: CONCLUSIONS

p1050050

The Uhans A101S is a pretty nice $70 that I kind of enjoyed using for more than a week.

p1050077

Sure, it comes with some flaws that most of the cheap phones have and it lacks some basic stuff like backlit capacitive keys or LED notification light but in general, it gets all the basics right.

p1040841

Also, it has kind of flashy design, good UI and gaming performance, a decent camera and good battery life.

Finally, the Uhans A101S is a decent offering for the price, despite a few shortcomings.

The Snapdragon 820 Can’t (Really) Support Windows x86 Applications Afterall

A few days ago, we reported that Qualcomm and Microsoft have a partnership that will put Snapdragon chips in PCs starting next year. During the event, there was a live demo of a PC powered by a Snapdragon 820 running Windows x86 apps (video below).

Snapdragon 820

The video shows legacy windows apps like Edge Browser and Photoshop launched with no issues. However new reports are saying the processor can’t really handle x86 apps very well and hence the reason for settling for the Snapdragon 835 chips.

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_GlGglbu1U[/embedyt]

This comes as bad news for manufacturers who might have planned to use the still recent processor in devices next year. The Snapdragon 820 chip would have been a cheaper alternative for manufacturers who want to release their own Windows devices that can run x86 apps, since using a Snapdragon 835 chip will most definitely increase the final price of the devices.

Possible Honor Magic Specification and Price Leaks: 4K Screen, Dual Cameras, and ¥9999 Tag

The Honor Magic is one of the most anticipated phones for the year. The timing seems to be perfect, like the final act of the show before we pull the curtains on 2016. Launching in six days from now, more details are still showing up.

First is a possible pricing from online mall, JingDong who have the phone listed for ¥9999 (~$1447.62) which is really really on the high side. However, that’s not the official price but judging from the statement by analyst @Pan Jiutang in this article, we doubt the Honor Magic will sell for less than a $1000.

honor-magic-price honor-magic

Next is an image of 16 possible configurations the Honor Magic might come with. There are a number of POSSIBLE configurations the Honor magic may have like dual cameras (rear and front) and curved edges, and some we think it is just not going to have such as a foldable display. One feature on the list we are sure of is the super fast charging battery. Other specs Huawei/Honor may throw in include water resistance, wireless charging, and artificial intelligence.

p1050200 p1050201

The phone ships with all the usual stuff and some extras include a screen protector and a soft TPU case.

Doogee Y6 Review: DESIGN and DISPLAY

p1050004

When it comes to the design, the Doogee Y6 looks very similar to the Huawei P7 Lite, in my opinion.

p1050006

Nevertheless, the phone is well-built and it uses a metal backplate to give a bit of a premium look and feel. The frame and the buttons, however, are made of plastic.

p1050017

We have a 5.5” display, which has only 720p resolution but it is plenty sharp for everyday use.

Also, there is a 8MP camera above the display but we don’t have neither LED notification light nor backlit capacitive keys.

On the back, we have a 13MP camera with a dual-LED flash and a fingerprint scanner, which is not the fastest I’ve seen but it gets the job done.

The loudspeaker is pretty good for the class of the phone.

Doogee Y6 Review:  HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

p1050019

Doogee Y6 ships with an octa-core MTK6750 chip (1.5GHz) , 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.

The gaming performance is good but not great. The phone can handle the games like Asphalt 8 on medium graphics very well but once you set the graphics to max., you should expect some skipped frames.

Doogee Y6 Review: USER INTERFACE

The phone ships with the Android 6.0 but we have quite a few added features by Doogee.

Just to name a few, you can select from a variety of gesture and motion controls that work pretty well. Also, you can use a floating gesture control bar if you wish. In addition, you can use a one-hand mode that is really convenient in some situations.

p1050211

In general, the UI performance is good. I didn’t have lags or stutter on the daily basis.

Doogee Y6 Review: IMAGE QUALITY

When it comes to the image quality, you can get some decent-looking photos out of this phone but you can’t expect a lot from a cheap phone. The biggest complaints would be the lack of sharpness and quite a bit of noise even in daylight situations.

As usual, the image quality decreases in low light.

Selfies could look a lot sharper and have more detail.

The video quality is mediocre as on most of the cheap phones.

Doogee Y6 Review: CONNECTIVITY

p1050088

I didn’t have any major connectivity issues except for the fact that once the GPS was pretty slow to get the position lock.

Doogee Y6 Review:  BATTERY LIFE

p1050208

The phone ships with the 3200mAh battery that performs pretty well for its capacity. You should expect about 5 hours of screen-on time but the results may vary, depending on the usage.

Doogee Y6 Review: CONCLUSIONS

p1050033

Doogee Y6 is a pretty good sub-$100 phone but as usual to cheap devices, it is not perfect.

It has a nice design and it sits nicely in the hand, decent specifications assure a pretty good gaming and user interface performance and the device has a nice display.

p1050035

However, you have to know that there is no LED notification light, the capacitive buttons are not backlit. Also, it would have been nice to see the metal frame and metal buttons.

p1050089

At the end of the day, Doogee Y6 is a decent offering for the price but as always, it has some shortcomings that most of the cheap phones have.
