Only 7 days are remaining for Xiaomi’s annual product launch event that will be held at Shenzhen, China. Xiaomi has already confirmed that one of the products that will be announced at the upcoming event is MIUI 10. All of a sudden, the Chinese manufacturer has started recruitment of closed beta testers in China.

Starting from today Xiaomi is accepting registrations until May 31 in the home country. After the application is reviewed, some of the users will get a chance to try the new version of MIUI soon after its official announcement on May 31.

The MIUI 10 has been designed to offer faster performance than the MIUI 9. Previous reports have revealed that Xiaomi devices that are currently running on Android 5.0 Lollipop won’t be eligible to receive the final edition of MIUI 10. After the debut of MIUI 10, Xiaomi may confirm on the official list of eligible devices that will support the new MIUI version.

Xiaomi will be debuting the Xiaomi Mi 8 flagship phone on May 31. Xiaomi has announced that it is suspending MIUI 9 Beta ROM updates after April 27  and would instead focus on optimisation from then on until June. The company first unveiled MIUI 9 custom ROM in July last year and since then there have been regular updates which include closed beta (releases every Tuesday) and public beta (releases every Friday). But now, an admin on the MIUI forum has informed fans that the MIUI team will release the last Development/Alpha ROM 8.4.26 and then there will be no update for a couple of weeks in order to achieve better system stability and optimisation.

This also affects the MIUI Global Beta ROMs as well but just for a week. From the look of things, it has more to do with allowing more time for optimisation than because of the upcoming MIUI 10. In another light, it could be that the company is planning to commence the Closed Beta programme for the MIUI 10, hence the suspension of MIUI 9 update. Xiaomi announced it had started working on MIUI 10 custom ROM in January this year. Since then, no official announcement has been made regarding its rollout itinerary. But we believe the tech giant has something in the works and it is believed to be based on Android Oreo. So, it has got to be fast about it since Android Oreo will soon get a successor.

Despite its support for older devices, Xiaomi is usually slower than other smartphones manufacturers at bringing the latest Android versions on its devices. Anyways, in the recent months, the company seems to be getting faster at releasing major updates, and this may happen even with Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, even though it is not a flagship device.

The mid-ranger focused on the quality-price ratio is still running a ROM based on Android Nougat. It is actually getting updated to MIUI Global Stable 9.2.7.0 based on Android 7.1.1. But a new firmware has just surfaced online, and it suggests that the phone may switch directly to Android 8.1 Oreo, which is actually the latest OS version. The leaked MIUI 9 Global Stable firmware carries the build number 9.5.6.0.OEIMIFA and according to the official MIUI update schedule it will be officially rolled out starting from this month via OTA. Currently, it is only available to download on MIUI website and it can be manually flashed on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Xiaomi had introduced the MIUI 9 proprietary Android skin in July last year. The company began the roll out of the MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM from November. Xiaomi’s Global VP and Managing Director for India confirmed on Twitter earlier this week on the list of Xiaomi phones that are eligible to receive the MIUI 9 update. The eligible devise list reveals that even four-year old phones such as Mi 3 and Redmi 1S will be treated with the MIUI 9 update.

Some of the aforementioned smartphones have already received the MIUI 9. Newer handsets such as the Redmi Note 4, Redmi Y1, Redmi Y1 Lite, Mi MIX 2, Mi Max 2 are receiving the Android Nougat flavored version of MIUI 9 update. However, some of the older phones such as Redmi Note 3 are receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow flavored MIUI 9 update which lacks some of the features like split-screen mode.

The MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM should automatically arrive as OTA update on the above listed phones. Alternatively, users can manually check for the arrival of the MIUI 9 update by navigating to Settings > About Phone > System Update. Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has today received a new stable version of MIUI 9.5  which usher in Android 8.0 Oreo. The new Mi Mix 2 update comes with the version number 9.5.2.0 ODECNFA and after the update, the phone now runs Android 8.0 Oreo with a number of new features.

Top among the new features the new update brings is face unlock feature and screen gesture controls. The supported gestures including swiping up from the bottom of the screen to go to the desktop, sliding up and pause at the bottom of the screen to switch the recent tasks, sliding inward the screen either from left or right to return to the previous page, and sliding the left and right edges of the screen inward to trigger the application function.These features had only been available on the China ROM but now, it is available globally to those who upgrade to this new version. Apart from these features, Android Oreo also brings improvements which help increase battery life and speed by limiting background activity. The available memory space is bigger, 3.6GB or so out of 6GB RAM. Android Oreo also comes with features like picture-in-picture mode, Autofill, and a bunch of new emojis.

The update package size is 1.4GB but you have to flash MIUI global beta 7.12.21 on your Mi Mix 2 as this is the only version the OTA update is available for. Recent leaks have claimed that Mi MIX 2S powered by Snapdragon 845 will be unveiled by Xiaomi at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. On the other side, the Xiaomi Mi 7 is speculated to debut in early second quarter this year. Today, a screenshot showing the key specs of the Mi 7 smartphone has appeared.

As it can be seen in the above screenshot, the Mi 7 features a 5.6-inch display that supports FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. Hence, the display will be supporting an aspect ratio of 18:9.

The Snapdragon 845 is present under the hood of the Mi 7. It is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM. By this it could become the first Mi series phone to arrive with 8 GB of RAM. The screenshot also reveals that it has an inbuilt storage of 128 GB.

This suggests that it could be higher configuration model and there could be a lower configuration variant featuring 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. It includes a huge battery of 4,480mAh battery and it is loaded with MIUI 9 Developer ROM version 8.1.30x. At launch, it is expected to arrive with the stable edition of MIUI 9 flavored Android Nougat.

The Mi 6 came with a 3,350 battery. The inclusion of a 4,480mAh battery on its successor model sounds too good to be true. Hence, the information revealed by the above screenshot cannot be blindly trusted.

Previous reports have claimed that Xiaomi will be launching Mi 7 Plus also alongside the Mi 7. The Mi 7 Plus is speculated to house a larger Samsung display of 6 inches. Xiaomi is now developing MIUI 10 as it is completing roll out of MIUI 9 to promised devices. Last week, the company had started a poll to let its users choose between MIUI 10 and MIUI X monikers for the next edition of MIUI. A leaked list has surfaced recently that has the names of the Xiaomi devices that are eligible to receive the MIUI 10 update.

In the past month, Xiaomi confirmed that the  MIUI 9 update is coming to 40 Xiaomi devices which includes smartphones dating back to 2012. The Chinese firm had confirmed in November last year that the MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM will be the final major MIUI update for some older Xiaomi devices such as Xiaomi Mi 2,Mi 2S, Mi 4i, Mi Note, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi 2 and Redmi 2 Prime.

The MIUI 10 will not be coming to the aforementioned devices, but it is likely to be available for all the other Xiaomi devices. Hence, the following devices will be eligible to receive the MIUI 10 update:

Xiaomi, after releasing MIUI 9.2 update for the Redmi Note 3, has now started rolling out the MIUI 9.2 update for the Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime.

The update for the third batch of devices was scheduled to roll out from December 2017. However, it was delayed because of a critical bug in the update. It seems that the company has now skipped the MIUI 9.0 update and is now rolling out MIUI 9.2 update directly.

The new update for the Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S comes as MIUI 9.2.2.0.MALMIEK and is of around 376 MB in size. Unfortunately, the update is still based on Android Marshmallow only and the base version has not been updated to Android Oreo.

This update has April 2017 security patch, which is really old as the January 2018 update patch has been rolled out. Because of the older security patch, the device remains vulnerable to KRACK WPA2 which Xiaomi fixed in other devices including Redmi Note 3. However, do note that this is a Nightly build. China-based Xiaomi usually releases Stable Nightly updates to random users to get feedback and the same update is rolled out to all users as a Stable build if feedback goes well.

This latest MIUI update brings Interactive and Fresh UI changes, along with a new Gallery App, Calendar Cards, App Vault, Mi Video App, New Mi Explorer and Mi Drop. However, the users will not be able to enjoy features like New Notification Shade, Split Screen, and Quick Switch.

The Xiaomi Redmi 3S comes with a 5-inch HD display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor. There’s a 13MP rear camera with PDAF and LED flash and a 5MP wide-angle front-facing camera for selfies.

The Redmi 3S Prime model comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage while the standard model comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that expands the phone’s storage up to 256GB. The phone has a fingerprint scanner for added security and is powered by a 4,100mAh non-removable battery.

It took some extra weeks, but now Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, one of the best selling phones by the Chinese brand, is finally updating to MIUI 9.2. The update is a nightly Stable build, so it is not the final version. But expect a Global Stable version soon. With this update, the number of version jumps to 9.2.4.0.MHOMIEK and the size is 290 MB.

After announcing the arrival of the MIUI 9 OS on 4o new devices, Xiaomi has started rolling out a new version of its user interface on some of its latest smartphones: MIUI 9.2. Considering that it is not a major update, there are just a few changes and improvements than the original v9, but it is worth noting that some very interesting features have been implemented. The MIUI 9.2 will only roll out to devices which has already received the update to the v9 Global Stable ROM. Other devices will have to wait for this release until they get their Global Stable update.

According to the changelog, MIUI 9.2 brings the App Vault feature, a new Gallery editor, and the Mi Video app. Further, there is a fix for the KRACK WPA2 security vulnerabilities and a fix for the dual notification bug spotted in WhatsApp and Telegram in the previous version of the firmware. The UI has been simplified and now the Mi Mover app supports data migration restart. This means that if you are migrating your data from a phone to another and the hotspot connection accidentally interrupts, it will be restored automatically and it will continue from the same point. The update also adds dynamic calibration function for the distance sensor, which will enable the screen to turn off and on correctly when needed.

There are also some fixes for the fingerprint reader and some compatibility issues with third-party software on full-screen devices. Other minor optimizations in MIUI 9.2 include home screen, themes, the App Lock, the Backup function and the Mi Account. The update has been rolled out in its Stable version on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi Redmi 4, Xiaomi Redmi Y1, Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite and Xiaomi Redmi 5A. Unfortunately, we do not know when the update will hit the other devices of the company.

Yesterday, through the official Weibo account of MIUI, Xiaomi had announced that it will delivering “good news” today at 10 AM (local time). Today, the Chinese manufacturer has confirmed on Weibo that 40 Xiaomi devices are eligible to receive the MIUI 9 update.

In July 2017, Xiaomi had announced the MIUI 9 update, an Android ROM based on Android Nougat. It began the rollout of the MIUI 9 global ROM early in November. The company has now officially confirmed that it will be bringing the MIUI 9 update to 40 devices.

As it can bee seen in the above list, the Mi 2 is a device that was released in 2012 whereas the Mi 3, Mi 2S and 2A smartphones are from 2013. MIUI is one of the most popular versions of Android in China. Not only is it the version run by Xiaomi phones, it is also available for a bunch of non-Xiaomi devices. The Android ROM is now in its 9th version and has been rolling out to devices in the past few months.

Today, the official MIUI Weibo revealed that there will be an announcement tomorrow at 10:00 AM (local time). No one has an idea what it is about except that it is “Good News” according to a rough translation of the post. The post also includes a photo of the Xiaomi Mi 2.

There are reports that the announcement has to do with MIUI 9, more specifically the final roll-out to the remaining supported devices. The phones belonging to this last batch is said to include the 5-year old Mi 2 hence the use of its image in the post.

Xiaomi’s MIUI has been lauded for its support for older devices, a feature that is uncommon to stock Android and a number of other ROMs of Chinese origin.

Xiaomi continues to add more features to its latest MIUI 9 ROM, the latest being  Smart Gesture. MIUI 9 Developer ROM has now gotten a new update that brings onboard full-screen smart gestures which could completely replace onscreen navigation buttons or serve as an alternative form of navigation.  The new update has been pushed to the present crop of Xiaomi full-screen models including the Mi Mix, Mi Mix 2, and the recently launched Redmi 5, and Redmi 5 Plus running MIUI 9 Development version. 

Smart Gestures is not a new feature as it is already available on the Android operating system but this is the first time it is available to Xiaomi models running its custom ROM based on the Android kernel. Smart Gestures are made available as a result of the touchscreen display available on smartphones. The smart touchscreen can identify the palm and finger contact. The user and the system become integrated as a result of the feature, making the system more intuitive, resulting in faster response times and increased productivity.

In the case of MIUI 9, the update that brings the Smart Gesture is version 7.12.25 and after the upgrade, users will need to go to navigation settings and switch from full-screen to full-screen gestures. Basically, there are three operational methods available. To go back to home screen (desktop), you just slide up from the bottom of the screen. This is especially useful since there is no physical home button on the full-screen models. Also, if you slide a little from the bottom edge of the screen and then pause, it reveals your recently opened or running apps. Finally, to return to the previous screen, you just slide from the left or right edge of the screen.We believe that more Smart Gestures features would be made available as time goes on.

Some don’t mind these ads, as long as they keep the services free, but there is a section of the population who would want to avoid any kind of advertisements in their user interface. For them, Xiaomi has just launched a new ￥9.9 Super VIP monthly subscription service in China for MIUI.

How it works is pretty simple. You pay the company, either monthly or yearly, a fixed amount and in return you get a bunch of benefits including advertising free interface and cloud storage.

The Xiaomi Super VIP subscription model will cost you ￥9.9 ($1.5) per month or ￥88 ($13.5) per year. You get more benefits if you are ready to pay for the entire year. At present, the service is in beta and Xiaomi is accepting only 10,000 experience and 10,000 monthly users to this program per day. Only 1000 applicants are being accepted for the year program per day.  The beta kicks off from today and ends on December 31.

If you get into the Super VIP beta program, you’ll be exempted from any kind of system or system app advertisements. However, you’ll still be seeing third party app ads as the service doesn’t restrict other applications. Apart from this, monthly users get 22 set of exclusive VIP themes, 5GB of cloud storage, and 1000 books to read per month. In comparison, the yearly users will get 37 exclusive VIP themes, 10GB of cloud storage, and 1200 books to read per month.

Note that if your Mi account is logged into multiple smartphones, only one of the phones can enjoy the benefits of this Super VIP service.

Xiaomi’s MIUI 9 Developer ROM has got a new update which brings a cool new photo movie feature. The new Photo movie feature allows users to turn their photos into a video such that they open one after the other in a video format. The update also brings some optimization which automatically restores cloud photos. The music app is also upgraded and there is now an “add song” button.

Models which have been upgraded will get a red button like a record button at the upper right corner of the photo gallery and that is the “photo movie” button. Clicking the red button will allow users select between 3 to 6 photos from the phone’s gallery in order to create a 10 seconds video. The new video is usually located in DCIM/ CREATIVE file folder. There are presently six templates available with six different music playing in the background. But the MIUI Development team has hinted that in the future it would implement user-defined music while users can add more photos to the photo movie.

MIUI 9 comes with upgrades such as a split-screen feature which would allow users run two separate apps on the same screen. There is also a picture-in-picture mode, a redesigned dock bar, a Smart advert filter, Smart Assistant, Smart App launcher, System optimization and other features.

Xiaomi is all set to launch the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones at a launch event on December 7. While we already know what to expect from the smartphones, new details have now surfaced online.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5’s manual has been leaked online which reveals that the smartphone will have a hybrid Dual-SIM configuration. Thus, users will be able to either use dual SIMs or one SIM and one microSD card. However, there is a disclaimer that only one SIM card can use 4G network.

The leaked manual also reveals that the phone has three circular sensors placed on the top bezel. This could mean that the device will have a soft front-facing selfie light, along with a front-facing snapper and a proximity sensor.

Xiaomi has posted an image on microblogging platform Weibo, confirming that the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will come with company’s latest MIUI 9 out-of-the-box. The MIUI 9 is based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system.

The Redmi 5 will feature a 5.7-inch HD+ display with screen resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. Under the hood, it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor — the first chipset in the Snapdragon 400 series that is using a 14mm process technology.

The smartphone is expected to pack 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. There will be another variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage. The device will come with a 12-megapixel camera sensor at the back and a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper.

The Redmi 5 Plus is expected to come with a 5.99-inch screen that will have a Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It will be powered by Snapdragon 625 processor, the same one that is powering the Redmi Note 4 smartphone. The phone will come with a dual camera setup at the back, featuring a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor.

According to the previous reports, the Redmi 5 is reportedly going to be priced at 699 Yuan (approximately $106) while the Redmi 5 Plus could be priced at 999 Yuan (approximately $151).

Xiaomi’s second flagship phone of the year – the Mi MIX 2 has begun receiving its MIUI 9 update. This is the global stable version with version number V9.1.1.0.NDEMIEI.

The OTA is said to be 1.4GB large but if you can’t wait, you can download the full ROM from here. It is 1.6GB though. All you have to do is copy the file when you are done downloading into the ‘downloaded_rom’ folder of your phone’s internal storage. Open the updater app, tap the icon at the top right corner and select “choose update package”. Select the file from the folder and you should be fine from there.

MIUI 9 brings a number of new features to Xiaomi phones. There is now split-screen multi-tasking support, new icons and animations, and a redesigned notification shade. However, the biggest changes are not visual. The overall user experience is now faster thanks to a number of optimizations such as dynamic resource allocation, automatic cache cleaning, and real-time defragmentation to name a few.

Xiaomi has been busy working on a stable version of the latest iteration of its custom version of Android, MIUI 9, so it didn’t pay much attention to Android 8.0 Oreo. Now that the roll-out has begun hitting devices, it can now focus its attention on Android 8.0 Oreo.

Report reaching us says Xiaomi has begun recruiting beta testers for Android 8.0 for its flagship device – the Mi 6. This is a closed beta and the selection may take a few weeks. Selected users will get to use the closed beta version for a month or so before it is then opened to more devices.  A developer version will then be released as a public beta.

The pattern is similar to last year’s when it wanted to begin rolling out Android Nougat. We expect more devices to join the closed beta program before the end of the year and a public beta will be made available in January. A final stable update will arrive much later, most likely after the Mi 7 and a bunch of other new devices have been announced.

Xiaomi has rolled out MIUI 9 update for a barrage of smartphones, Xiaomi models that is. The new update is for the China ROM and it is the biggest single rollout since the release of the MIUI 9 Stable ROM. This is coming about three months since the first MIUI 9 China Developer ROM was released. Xiaomi also commenced OTA push of MIUI 9 China ROM on October 31st but that was for a few models.

Right now with this release, MIUI 9 China ROM is now available for a total of 18 models. The models include the Mi 6, Mi Max 2, Mi Note 3, Mi Note 2, Mi 5X, Redmi 4X, Redmi Note 5A, Redmi Note 5A Prime, Mi 5s, Mi 5, Mi 5c,  Mi MIX, Mi 5s Plus, Redmi 5A, Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm/Redmi Note 4X, Mi MIX 2, Mi Note Pro, Mi 4S, Mi 4c.

Xiaomi advises that those flashing from Beta ROM to Stable ROM needs to clear all the data before flashing so as not to get issues of system incompatibility such as no signal and rebooting. Earlier today, Xiaomi had unveiled the new Redmi Y series selfie-centric smartphones. Apart from the Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite phones, the company also announced the arrival of the Global ROM of MIUI 9.

The MIUI 9 Global ROM includes tons of improvements and new features. As far as performance is concerned, Xiaomi claims it that it as fast as stock Android. A Xiaomi spokesperson said, “We compared it with Samsung, and found we’re faster than TouchWiz. We also did a comparison of Redmi Note 4 with the Mi A1 because basically they’re the same hardware: one on MIUI 9 and another on stock Android. In terms of app launch times, we found it’s about the same.” One should be aware of the fact that even Google has launched Android 8.0 Oreo, the new MIUI 9 is based on Android Nougat OS.

Xiaomi MIUI 9 includes a Smart Assistant which can be accessed by swiping in the upwards direction from the home screen. It features a split-screen mode and it also brings along 21 new animated icons. The photo editing app includes new smart editing tools. Xiaomi launched its MIUI 9 earlier this year in July. However, the company delayed the rollout of the MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM by around three months. Recently, Xiaomi announced that the new MIUI version will start rolling out in India from November 2.

However, it appears that the update is now rolling out ahead of the company’s plan. Some users with Mi 6 and Mi Max 2 smartphone have already started receiving the MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM update.

MIUI V9.0.1.0.NCAMEI firmware version is currently being rolled out to the Mi 6, while MIUI V9.0.1.0.NDDMIEI is the firmware version that is being sent to the Mi Max 2. The update is of around 568MB.

The MIUI 9 Global ROM has already passed the beta testing stage and the company had also started pushing MIUI 9 Stable ROM to select Mi users in China earlier this month. The company is expected to roll out the stable ROM update in batches, just the way it handled the release of the Developer ROM.

Earlier, MIUI Marketing Deputy Director, Huang Longzhon had said that the stable version is normally rolled out within two months of releasing developer version, but since MIUI 9 is a new system, it has taken more time to prepare stable version.

The MIUI 9 brings several new features to the table such as deep level system optimization, new icons, and new animations for launching and closing apps, simple home screen edition, among others. It also comes with features like split-screen, search for apps in the Dual apps mode and better blocklist rules.

Along with some new features, a lot of the existing ones have also been improved, including Silent/DND timer, floating notifications, button and gesture shortcuts, among others.

Apart from India, as of now, there is no information about the rollout of this MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM update to other regions where Mi users are located.

Xiaomi is expected to release the Stable version of its latest MIUI 9  custom ROM any moment from now. We can authoritatively report to you that the release may take place even sooner than expected. A sizable number of Xiaomi phone users in China have started receiving the update to MIUI 9 Stable version. A number of them have taken to Weibo to share the good news and from the look of things, it started rolling out today. We were able to detect this sizable number by search the keyword “MIUI9” on Weibo.

Xiaomi had earlier hinted that the MIUI 9 Stable ROM should be expected at the earliest this month and that disclosure was made about two months back. It is possible the tech giant has commenced the roll out of stable ROM and in the coming days we could see a full release of OTA updates ushering MIUI 9 to compatible models. So, XIaomi may not be in a hurry to push updates just yet but that would be done sooner than later.

Today, MUI Marketing Deputy Director, Huang Longzhon has officially confirmed on Weibo that the stable build of MIUI 9 with version no 9.0.2.0 will be released soon.

He has also posted a snapshot of a Xiaomi Mi 6 that is running on MIUI 9.0.2.0 as a proof to show that a stable build is ready and it will be rolled out to smartphones soon. The company is working on releasing a stable version of MIUI 9 and rolling out an unstable version can be disastrous as it can affect millions of users.

He added that normal circumstances the stable version is rolled out within two months of releasing developer version. This update is for the China ROM and this should be the open beta since Xiaomi had already rolled out the closed beta to its beta testers a few weeks back. To get the update, users of the models getting the update whose phones are installed with MIUI 8 Developer ROM will get direct OTA upgrade to MIUI 9. On the other hand, those running MIUI 8 Stable version will need to head over to the MIUI official website and apply for unlocking of the ROM. They’ll then manually download MIUI 9 and then flash the ROM into their model. In this case, they’ll need to back up personal data to avoid loss of important documents.

Xiaomi yesterday pushed the third batch of MIUI 9 Closed Beta to participants of the beta program and just as we reported, the third batch is made up of a whole lot of Xiaomi models. Except for the Mi 1 and Redmi 2A and a few others whose hardware setup are not robust enough to accommodate the upgrade, all other models not captured in the first and second batch have now gotten the upgrade to MIUI 9. 

The MIUI 9 upgrade roll out has been pretty fast and that pace is expected to continue as Xiaomi is expected to release the Developer ROM (open beta) to the public within the next two weeks. After the roll out of the Open beta version of MIUI 9 Developer ROM, the next aspect would be the Stable version. We now have an idea of when Xiaomi will release the MIUI 9 Stable version and it is coming from the VP Marketing at MIUI while responding to a question of when the Stable ROM will be available. The Xiaomi official did not give a specific date but disclosed that usually, the Stable version becomes available about two months or so after the release of a new MIUI version. The official added that this new generation MIUI 9 system upgrade may take longer as the company would not want to push a stable ROM that would later be discovered to still have some issues. The Stable ROM is the final product so it is expected to come with most of the bugs fixed since is updated only once a month or twice or even longer unlike Developer ROM that gets weekly updates.

This is because Xiaomi has made a shocking disclosure that not all models would support the Split screen feature. This means that even if MIUI 9 update did hit your Xiaomi model, if it is not among the models that support Split screen, you won’t be able to use the feature.

Xiaomi released the list of models which would have the split screen feature and surprising, out of about 36 models which would get MIUI 9 update, only 16 would have the Split screen function. This is because Split screen feature is only available for models running the Android 7.0 Nougat kernel while those using lower OS versions won’t support it.

Today (August 16) marks seven years since Xiaomi‘s MIUI was first released and Xiaomi is celebrating that with fans on the MIUI Forum. In the past 7 years, the Custom ROM has evolved right from the first MIUI V1 to the present lightning fast MIUI 9. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that in the last 7 years, MIUI has undergone nine different changes with the resulting changes in the icons and more features added.

The evolution of MIUI is captured in these pictures of the different icons of the interface from version 1 to 9. The difference could be seen, not only in the color scheme but also in the icons themselves which have seen some changes, even though some still retain their looks from previous versions.

The photos were released by Xiaomi today as part of celebrations for the 7th anniversary of MIUI. It should be noted that MIUI 1 was developed only for the Google Nexus One and came with more functionalities back then when compared to the Pure AOSP ROM. Version 2 came with support for more smartphones but MIUI, as we know it today, began with MIUI 3, released in April 2012. This marked a major milestone for MIUI ROM as themes were first introduced on Version 3 and it gave users the flexibility to customise how they want their ROM to look like. MIUI 3 was based on Google’s Android Mobile Operating System 2.3, named “Gingerbread” and the Mi 1 came pre-installed with MIUI 3.

In terms of the appearance of the icons, MIUI 5 had the largest changes in its looks as it underwent a major GUI redesign and revamp, from the addition of notification at a swipe-down shade menu to system animations and desktop beautification, but yet retain the similar users’ experience and operations. It was on MIUI 5 that all Google Services were removed due to new regulations in China.

One way to have a clear understanding of the things that have changed over the years in through pictures and this photo showing the icons for the key system apps for the successive generations of MIUI clearly give an understanding of how much the custom ROM which is skin over the Android OS has evolved right from the MIUI 1 through to MIUI 9.

The Xiaomi MIUI is actually a user interface which some users see as better than its native Android version especially in China where creating a custom UI based on Android OS is the norm. The interface is generally beautiful and very user-friendly. Moreso, the MIUI team updates the UI very often so as to fix bugs and other loopholes that are noticed.

Apart from its usability, the visual look of the MIUI embodied by the icons has been another area of interest and one clear indicator of that dynamism is the icon. As could be seen in the image, each version of the user interface brings with it a slight change in at least one of the icons and in some cases more than one. In some cases, the change is in the colour scheme of the icon but there’s always a change. No two generations have exactly the same icons. MIUI 1 has a different camera icon, messaging, phone dial icons and music player icon from the second generation (MIUI 2). The change continues until MIUI 9 with its smooth, refined icons but from version 7, the icons look almost similar.

Xiaomi has released four dual camera smartphones so far. There is the Redmi Pro, the Mi 5S Plus, the Mi 6 and the newly announced Mi 5X. One of these four devices will be launching in India next month according to the Managing Director of Xiaomi India.

From the looks of it, the Mi 5X is the most likely choice seeing as the Redmi Pro is no longer in production; the Mi 5S is “old”; and Xiaomi already said the Mi 6 won’t be released in India. The Mi 5X will also be a good compensation for the Xiaomi fans in India since it has the same camera sensors as the Mi 6.

The news about a dual camera smartphone arriving in India was shared on Twitter by Manu Kumar Jain who also doubles as the Vice-President of the company. The tweet also includes a picture of himself but with the background blur effect teasing the camera performance of the phone.

If it is the Xiaomi Mi 5X, it may also be an opportunity for the company to announce the global version of MIUI 9.

If you are interested in joining the MIUI 9 Closed Beta programme, there’s good news for you. Xiaomi has disclosed that registration for beta testers who would help test run the new Custom ROM version on their models has opened on MIUI Forum. The next set of models that would get the Developer ROM update include the Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and Redmi 4X.

Xiaomi later hinted that the Mi 5 would get its own taste of MIUI 9 this week and indeed, registered beta testers using the Mi 5 models have got OTA update on their models. MIUI 9 Developer ROM for the twelve Xiaomi models is scheduled to start rolling in mid-August which is very close by. Owners of the listed Xiaomi models can head over to MIUI Forum to register but they’ll need to download the MIUI Forum app on their phones first.

Do note that you’ll need to have some knowledge about rooting your device in order to attempt becoming a beta test if you are using the MIUI 8 Global ROM. The Developer ROM is the China version so, models running the Global ROM needs to be rooted so as to be able to run the China ROM. MIUI 9 comes with upgrades such as a split-screen feature which would allow users run two separate apps on the same screen. There is also a picture-in-picture mode, a redesigned dock bar, a Smart advert filter, Smart Assistant, Smart App launcher, System optimization and other features.

It’s just a little over one week since Xiaomi‘s MIUI 9 was officially launched and the Beta ROM has only been pushed to just a few models, yet the custom ROM has reportedly found its way into the OnePlus 3T. The OnePlus 3T was announced last year packing a Snapdragon 821 chip as a slight upgrade of the OP3. The ROM in question is an unofficial Patch of the MIUI 9 ROM which was released by developers whose identity we cannot ascertain. But from the screenshot we can guess this emanated from China because the texts are all in Chinese.

The patch was possible as a result of the open source nature of Android ROM and MIUI and the modifications made it possible for the custom UI to run on the OnePlus 3T. There are a couple of screenshots to back the claim that the OnePlus 3T has got a taste of MIUI 9. The screenshots also reveal the version is MIUI 9 7.7.31 Developer ROM, meaning it was last updated on July 31. One of the screenshots is that of the”About Phone” page and the model and its features are clearly seen to belong to the OnePlus 3T (A3010).

Further more, the MIUI 9 Theme can also be seen, as well as the split screen features and a couple of other features of MIUI9 are reportedly available on the phone. According to the developer, the MIUI 9 Bootloader can booth the OnePlus 3T normally but there are still a couple of bugs that are yet to be fixed on the Patch ROM. For those that are interested, the new Patch ROM package will be released on Sunday. But do note that this isn’t an official release and so, will likely contain bugs that can compromise the security of your smartphone. Xiaomi in the near future will likely release the Patch ROM tool for MIUI 9 in order for developers to modify it for other non-Xiaomi models. The tool is available right from MIUI 2.3 to MIUI 8.

MIUI 9 is in the news once again, this time around it has to do with the Closed Beta program which is currently on. Xiaomi is reported to have revealed that the MIUI 9 Closed Beta program has received applicants in tremendous numbers. Presently the number of applicants for the Closed Beta program has surpassed 1 million persons.  Just recently, that figure was revealed to be around 700,000 which was seen as the largest in the company’s history.

Presently, the applications for the Closed Beta program is around 1.56 million persons, barely two weeks after the Beta program opened. Xiaomi first disclosed that it would be opening up registration for MIUI 9 closed beta program on July 19, while the program itself commenced on July 21. The first batch of models to get the Closed Beta included the Mi 6, Redmi Note 4X (Snapdragon version) and the Mi 5X which was launched recently with MIUI onboard. Xiaomi only earlier today hinted that the Mi 5 will get its own update (Closed Beta) on August 7 while the 12 models billed to get theirs on August 25 will get rolling in mid-August.

The news of a large number of interests in Xiaomi’s latest MIUI ROM shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. This is due to the fact that MIUI 9 has been hyped as coming with a lot of stunning features while shedding off features that are not useful, thus making it lightning fast and smooth. More so, Xiaomi has got an army of loyal users who are always ready to explore the rich array of innovation the tech company has to offer. Mind you, this is for the China ROM only, so we expect the Global ROM to come with a far bigger number of applicants. Already, the Closed beta has started pushing to registered Beta testers and the reviews make it even more interesting to get on the program.

Xiaomi‘s “lighting fast” latest interface, MIUI 9 was launched last week alongside the Mi 5X and Mi AI speaker. The new ROM is scheduled to become available on the Mi 6 and Redmi Note 4X in addition to the Mi 5X which featured the ROM out-of-the-box. Xiaomi has now revealed via its MIUI Weibo official handle that the Mi 5 will get MIUI 9 update on August 7 which is next week Monday.

The Mi 5 was initially among the next batch of models that would get MIUI 9 update but now, it is in an exclusive list of its own. The device happens to be one of Xiaomi’s top-selling models so, it is no wonder they are giving it a special treatment. That’s just by the way, but the MIUI 9 in question is the China Beta version which means to be able to get the update you’ll have to register for the Beta program right at the MIUI Forum. 

In addition, Xiaomi also revealed that next batch of MIUI 9 Developer ROM (Closed Beta) for 12 different models will roll out in mid-August. MIUI comes in Developer ROM and Stable ROM, the Developer ROM is still in development and gets updates weekly except on China’s National holidays. To be able to use the Developer ROM, users must have knowledge of how to successfully flash the ROM on their Xiaomi phones. The models include the Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and Redmi 4X. Last week Xiaomi unveiled MIUI 9, the latest version of its custom ROM. Bringing a number of new features, one of the key upgrades to the OS is its speedy application launch time. Xiaomi is really confident of what it has achieved with the app launch time that it decided to pit it against the Huawei P10 and Samsung Galaxy S8.

All three phones had multiple apps installed from the same store on them and the test was carried out under a controlled environment. At the end of the day, the Xiaomi Mi 6 came out on top with 43 apps launching fastest. The Galaxy S8 (Samsung Experience) came in second with 4 apps and the Huawei P10 (EMUI 5.1) was third with 3 apps.

Xiaomi says MIUI 9 adopts optimized haptic feedback and thread scheduling to allow it to be super responsive.

You must have known by now that MIUI 9 is now official and the Mi 5X is the first Xiaomi model that would run on MIUI 9 out of the box. Xiaomi also announced the list of models that would get the MIUI 9 Developer ROM and the dates the updates would be available. 

MIUI comes in Developer ROM and Stable ROM and as the name implies the Developer ROM is still in development and gets updates weekly except on China’s National holidays. To be able to use the Developer ROM, users must have knowledge of how to successfully flash the ROM on their Xiaomi phones. On the other hand, the Stable ROM is the final product with most of the bugs fixed. The Stable ROM is updated only once a month or twice or even longer and users don’t need to know how to flash their smartphones.

 From the release itinerary, the Xiaomi Mi 6, Mi 5X, and Redmi Note Note 4X (Qualcomm version) will get the Developer ROM on August 11 while the second batch will start rolling on August 25. The second batch will involve a whole lot of models including Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max 32G, Mi Max 64G/128G, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro, and Redmi 4X. Then, from late September, MIUI 9 China  Developer ROM for all other Xiaomi Mi and Redmi models, except Mi 1/1S and Mi 2A, will be released in undisclosed batches. Do note that this Developer ROM is the China ROM of MIUI 9 and not the Global ROM. Xiaomi is yet to disclose exactly when the Global ROM will start rolling.

Xiaomi has officially launched the Mi 5X with a top notch design, decent specs line up and as an icing on the cake, the device comes with a pocket-friendly price tag. The Xiaomi Mi 5X was launched along with MIUI 9 at the event today. 

Design & Specification – Xiaomi Mi 5X

The Xiaomi Mi 5X has a dual camera setup at the rear which is similar in configuration to that of the Mi 6, a 12MP main sensor paired with a 12MP telephoto lens. We really can’t say if the camera will be as powerful as that of the Mi 6 as the Mi 5X comes with a less powerful Snapdragon 625 instead of SD835 on the Mi 6. But the camera also features a similar 2X lossless zoom and a Portrait mode which were all available in the Mi 6. Thus, we can safely say Xiaomi installed same camera sensors as the Xiaomi Mi 6 on this cheap model.

The device features a metal unibody with well-chamfered edges and fused antenna band design at the top and bottom edges. As far as other specifications go, the Xiaomi Mi 5X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor backed by 4GB of RAM while there is 64GB of storage onboard. The mid-range device sports a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080pixels. There is an average 3,080mAh battery crammed inside for long operational duration and standby time. The Mi 5X runs on Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9 which was launched in the same event, making it the first Xiaomi model to run MIUI 9 out of the box. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the Mi 5X and an improved audio system.

Pricing & Availability

Talking about the price, the Mi 5X will be sold for just 1,499 Yuan (~$220) and buyers will have the option of choosing from a Black, Gold and Rose Pink color variants. The device will go on sale in China in the coming weeks and with the price tag and design, this will be one hot-selling product.

Xiaomi seems to be trying hard to grab sales right off OPPO and Vivo in the mid-range segment with this new model but it has to make enough stocks available. Don’t expect this to roll out outside China soon but if it does, India will likely be its first port of call. As regards to when that will happen, we can’t say.

Xiaomi kicked off today’s event with the official launch of MIUI 9, the latest version of its custom ROM. Before the announcement, Xiaomi took the time to list off the achievements of the  ROM.

MIUI 9 has been in the making for about a year now and now it is finally official. A majority of the new features are system optimizations which should result in a smoother experience, though there are also some visual changes. Lets run through some of the key ones.

System Optimization

Xiaomi has worked hard on making MIUI 9 as smooth as possible when it comes to performance. MIUI will never be stock android but that doesn’t men it can’t be optimized to be equally fast and responsive even with its advanced customization features.

App launch has been improved by the addition of Dynamic Resource Allocation. What this does is use critical thinking to give your favorite apps priority when it comes to CPU allocation. This way your most used apps open up faster.

Haptic feedback has also been improved and there is an automatic cleaning process

Smart Assistant

MIUI 9 comes with a smart assistant that lets you search for almost anything within your device. If you are looking for that text from a particular day or picture from a particular event on your phone, the assistant is your best help at finding it fast. All you need is a bit of information such as the date, location, and even expression when it comes to images.

Smart App Launcher

This uses an algorithm to suggest apps based on what’s on your screen. So don’t be surprised if you get suggestions to bring up the maps app or ride booking app when you are talking about going out.

Split-Screen Multitasking

After what seemed like an endless wait, MIUI finally gets split-screen multitasking as a default feature. There is not much to say here as virtually everyone is familiar with the feature already.

MIUI 9 will be available as a closed beta for the Xiaomi Mi 6 and Redmi Note 4X tomorrow. Other devices will get it in coming weeks.

It is now very clear that Xiaomi will be launching the MIUI 9 along with the Mi 5X in only a matter of hours. What has also become certain is that the Chinese tech giant will be launching a new product from the Xiaomi Exploratory laboratory (Mi Lab) during the event.

Today, the Xiaomi Mi Lab Weibo page became busy with activity, teasing the launch event and what is likely a new product under the brand. The product wasn’t revealed but Xiaomi’s MI VR general manager took to Weibo to inform about the launch of a new product. The Xiaomi exec gave the idea that the product will be announced in the same iconic manner as Steve Jobs used to announce the last product during his Apple days using the “One More Thing” mantra. From the comments on his post, the product is likely a Smart Speaker just as we hinted.

If this is a Smart speaker, then we can also expect new Artificial Intelligent technology (AI) from Xiaomi. We don’t know the features of the Smart speaker but it is tipped as similar to Amazon’s Echo and other intelligent Voice assistants.

This is in order to ensure MIUI 9 offers a great user experience in terms of stability, smoothness, and better battery backup.

After the Mi 6 and Redmi Note 4X models have gotten the update, the second batch of models was hitherto not revealed but words coming out from a tech blogger on Weibo is that the MIUI 9 second batch models to get the update will be just three. The three models are revealed to be the Xiaomi Mi 5, Mi Mix and Mi Note 2. Apart from that, the blogger revealed that MIUI 9 goes by the internal codename Lightning which is a good one. Xiaomi has revealed the light nature of the new ROM in size and the resultant speed so, the name fits the new interface.

The roll out date for the first batch of MIUI 9 Custom ROM is not known but should be anytime within August. In that case, second batch models would likely get updates around September. That means it is likely going to be a long wait for the new MIUI interface for many Xiaomi model users especially those with budget models. It won’t be a bad idea to join the Beta testing program if you are eager to get the ROM because the polished Custom ROM may not be hitting your model anytime soon.
