BlackBerry KEY² gets updated in China, brings July’s security patch

The BlackBerry KEY² was launched in China a little over a month ago. It has now received its first update which brings some optimizations as well as the latest security patch.

According to a translation of the changelog, the update brings July’s security patch and optimizes the voice assistant, camera, and information displayed in the status bar. It also fixes a compatibility issue experienced by Beijing bus card users. There are other bug fixes mentioned in the complete changelog.

The update is 513MB in size and should be hitting devices over the next few days. There is no info yet as to when the update will be arriving outside China.

The BlackBerry KEY² comes with a 4.5-inch 1620 x 1080 display, a Snapdragon 660 processor and 6GB of RAM. It also has 64GB or 128Gb of storage depending on the variant you buy.

The KEY² is also the first BlackBerry to have dual rear cameras – two 12MP sensors with the secondary camera being a telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom. The selfie camera is an 8MP f/2.0 sensor.

Xiaomi has a new watch or smartwatch if you want to call it that. Called the Mijia Quartz Watch, it looks like an analog watch but once paired to your phone, you can “unlock” its smart features. Think of it as Xiaomi’s answer to the Lenovo Watch 9 or Withings Steel/Nokia Steel.

The Mijia Quartz Watch has a stainless steel frame while the dial is covered with mineral glass. It has a quick release interchangeable strap and comes in black, blue (with white dial), and gray.

The watch has a built-in calorie counter and pedometer. When paired with your phone, you can monitor your calories, steps taken, and distance covered. You can also set alarms and reminders. The app also comes in handy for setting the time.

The Mijia Quartz Watch is priced at ¥349 (~$52) and will go on sale on July 17th at 10 o’clock. It will be available on Tmall, the Mi Home app, and Mi online store.

MIUI 10 Developer ROM now available for second batch of Xiaomi phones

On May 31, Xiaomi had announced the all new MIUI 10 ROM. At the beginning of June, it had rolled out the Developer ROM closed beta in China for first batch of devices and the same devices had received public beta by the end of the month. Today, the Chinese manufacturer has released the developer ROM closed beta to the second batch of devices.

The first batch of devices that were treated with MIUI 10 Developer ROM included Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, Mi 6, Mi MIX 2S, Mi MIX 2, Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Redmi S2 and Redmi Note 5. Since the registrations for the Developer ROM closed beta ended yesterday in China, the company has made it available to the second batch of Xiaomi phones starting from today. After the closed beta testing comes to an end, the public beta is likely to arrive for the same second batch of devices by the end of this month.

The second batch of 17 Xiaomi phones that are now receiving the MIUI 10 Developer ROM closed beta are Xiaomi Mi Note 3, Mi 5S Plus, Mi 5S, Mi 5X, Mi 5C, Mi 4C, Mi 4S, Mi Max, Mi Max Prime, Mi Max 2, Redmi Note 5A, Note 5A Prime, Redmi Note 4X (Snapdragon variant), Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi 5, Redmi 5A and Redmi 4X.

The company has stated that the arrival of the public beta of Mi 5X will be delayed. The specific release time for the smartphone will be announced through its social media channels. By this, Xiaomi is bringing the latest MIUI 10 to a total of 27 smartphones.

The MIUI 10 Developer ROM closed beta can be installed in two ways. Devices on MIUI 6, 7, 8 and 9 developer version can navigate to System Settings > My Device > MIUI version and then access the direct OTA update. It is recommended to back up devices on MIUI 6, 7, 8 and 9 stable versions are recommended ad then install the upgrade via fastboot with unlocked bootloader.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro may sport dual edge curved OLED screen

Last year, the Huawei Mate 10 was launched with an LCD screen whereas the Mate 10 Pro had arrived with an OLED screen. Based on the information received through industry sources, ET News, a South Korean publication has claimed that China’s BOE will be supplying flexible OLED panels to Huawei for an upcoming strategic smartphone that is slated to get unveiled in the second half of 2018. Hence, it is now being speculated that the forthcoming Mate 20 Pro will be featuring a flexible OLED screen.

South Korean companies like Samsung Display and LG Display are leading the flexible OLED business with the former accounting for 90 percent market share. BOE is one of the popular suppliers of LCD panels. Compared to its rivals, it has entered the OLED market a bit late.

BOE has recently struck a deal for OLED panels with Huawei, the third largest smartphone maker in the world. This shows that the quality of the OLED panels of BOE is such that even major smartphone manufacturers are considering working with the China-based OLED manufacturer. The production of flexible OLED panels is still a problem for the company even though it had heavily invested in the sixth generation OLED panel in 2017.

The upcoming Kirin 980 chipset is expected to power the Mate 20 Pro. It could be equipped with five cameras with three sensors on the back and dual selfie snappers on the front. As of this writing, there is no confirmation on whether the Mate 20 smartphone that is likely to debut alongside the Mate 20 Pro will also feature a flexible OLED panel. The Mate 20 series is slate to get announced in October.

Honor Note 10’s front design revealed in leaked image

The smartphone market will soon welcome two large-screen phones in the coming weeks. The first one is the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 that will be debuting on July 19 and the Honor Note 10 is the other smartphone. Honor is yet to confirm on Note 10’s launch date, but its arrival seems to be close at hand since its reservations have started on JD. Leaked photos showing the rear side of the Note 10 had surfaced in the previous week, but its front design has remained a mystery. A leaked image of the smartphone has surfaced on Weibo to reveal its notch-less front design.

A recent report has revealed that Honor has managed to sell 3 million units of Honor 10 smartphone in just two months since its launch in May. Such is the popularity of the Honor 10 that features a notched screen. Rumors have claimed that the upcoming Note 10 may also feature a notched display since it will be arriving as a larger version of the Honor 10. However, the newly spotted leaked image of the alleged Honor Note 10 reveals that it will be equipped with a notch-less screen.

The above image shows the top and bottom bezels of the alleged Note 10 are quite slim. Also, the side bezels are almost non-existent. The smartphone seems to be sporting a massive screen with a tall aspect ratio. Recent reports have revealed that the Note 10 has a 6.9-inch S-AMOLED screen that produces an aspect ratio of 18:9 and Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.

There are some elements on the image that suggests that it could be a photoshopped image. The Honor logo on the bottom bezel is a bit weird. Also, the temperature of Beijing on July 5 is around 14 to 20 degrees C which seems to be strange as the usual temperature of the country is around 26 to 30 degrees C.

It is speculated that the Kirin 970 SoC will be powering the Note 10 along with 6 GB of RAM. It will be fueled by 6,000mAh battery with 5V/4.5A. The handset will be coming with an internal storage of 128 GB. For photography, it is expected to feature 24-megapixel + 16-megapixel dual camera setup and a front-facing camera of 16-mgepixel.

The Honor Note 10 is likely to release in the market on July 26. The reason behind it is that the reservations of the Note 10 on JD will be ending on July 25. However, Honor is yet to confirm on the launch date of Note 10.

Apple announces new MacBook Pros with 8th Gen processor and more

Apple has announced new versions of its MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. The major update in both the 13-inch and 15-inch model is the new 8th-gen Intel processors but Apple has also included other new features.

Inside the 15-inch model is a 6-core Intel Core i7 processor or Core i9 processor clocked at up to 2.9GHz and reaching up to 4.8GHz with Turbo Boost. It can also be configured to up to 32GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD storage.

The 13-inch model with Touch Bar can be configured to come with a quad-core Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor clocked at up to 2.7GHz and reaching up to 4.5GHz with Turbo Boost. Apple says it also now supports double the eDRAM, 16GB RAM max, and up to 2TB SSD.

Both models now come with a True Tone display for a more natural viewing experience. There is also an Apple T2 chip for better security which also brings “Hey Siri” to the Mac. Another upgrade is the keyboard which Apple says is now quieter while typing.

Apple has also announced new leather sleeves for the MacBook Pros. It will be available in Saddle Brown, Midnight Blue, and Black. The sleeve costs $179 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro and $199 for the 15-inch model. The 12-inch MacBook also gets new sleeves in the same colors above for $149.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Concept showcases a design style that combines the Mix 2 & Vivo NEX

Xiaomi‘s flagship Mi Mix was well received globally as a result of its transformational design which jolted the industry and sort of kickstarted a revolution in smartphone designs. After the Mi Mix, the Chinese giant was expected to take things a tad higher on the Mix 2 but that didn’t happen. Expectations were also not met on the Mi Mix 2s which wasn’t too different from the Mi Mix 2. So, it is quite understandable that there are anticipations that Xiaomi will finally effect a noticeable design change on the Mix 3. Such is very well exhibited on this Mi Mix 3 concept video created by the YouTube channel – Science and Knowledge.

The Mi Mix 3 is expected to be launched later this year as Xiaomi’s main flagship model for the year. The concept design looks more like a fusion of the Vivo NEX, another innovative full-screen model, and the Mi Mix 2. The design includes a pop-up camera just like the NEX smartphone. One spectacular thing about the concept is the high 99% screen to body ratio. This is highly unrealistic but then, the Mi Mix looked unrealistic when it was announced but it did become a reality. The design also includes an in-display fingerprint scanner, three rear-facing cameras and a ceramic body with metal fuselage.

Xiaomi is yet to disclose anything about the Mix 3 but the concept is envisioned to sport a 6-inch (2960 x 1440) IPS LCD display. The smartphone is also coming with a Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with 6GB RAM / 8GB RAM. The device will get its interface from an Android 9.0-based MIUI 10 ROM among other features. As expected, along with Oppo Find X flagship smartphone, the China-based company also started selling Oppo A5 mid-range smartphone in its home country. The smartphone, which is the third device in the company’s A-series, was announced last week.

It is available for purchase in China in two different color options — Mirror Blue and Pink, for a price of 1,500 Yuan, which roughly converts to $225.

OPPO Find X goes on its first sale in China

JioPhone with KaiOS gets Google Maps despite being a 2.4-inch feature phone

Samsung Exynos 9820 tipped to adopt a tri-cluster CPU like MediaTek deca-cores

Every year, Samsung comes up with a new flagship chipset to include inside the European versions of its Galaxy S series and Galaxy Note flagships. The next one should be called Exynos 9820 and according to a new leak, it may be way more interesting than its predecessors. According to the known leakster identified on Twitter by the nickname Ice Universe, the Korean giant is planning to adopt a tri-cluster architecture for its next top-end processor. The configuration should be 2+2+4 for a total of three clusters with different CPUs for each one.

According to the leak, the first cluster will include two custom cores Mongoose M4, while the rest of the clusters will include ARM cores. The second cluster should contain Cortex A76 cores, while the third one will be composed of efficient Cortex A55 cores. Further, Samsung Exynos 9820 will support the ARM DynamIQ technology which will make possible for the three clusters to work in every possible configuration. So, the phone should be able to automatically decide whether it is the moment to lower energy consumption or to enhance the performance. It is a similar architecture to the one used by MediaTek for the Helio X series composed of deca-core processors, with the difference that Samsung Exynos 9820 will be an octa-core chipset.

This SoC is rumored to reach a max frequency of 3.3 GHz, the highest frequency ever seen on a mobile chipset. The actual Exynos 9810 is an octa-core processor reaching a max frequency of 2.8 GHz, just like the Snapdragon 845 by Qualcomm. Samsung Exynos 9820 will debut with the European version of the Samsung Galaxy S10 line up and it should also be included in the Note 10, while the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 will still have the Samsung Exynos 9810.
