“As you know, Huawei lost access to Google services a few years ago due to the US embargo. The Chinese tech giant has even developed its own open-source operating system during the process, called HarmonyOS. We used to seeing this OS on Huawei devices until now, but it has finally found its place in the legendary Xiaomi Mi 6 model. Here are the details…

HarmonyOS continues to grow in the Chinese market, and as it does, we come across interesting modifications about open-source OS. A developer recently demonstrated that the operating system can run smoothly even on a phone with poor (Compared to todays flagships) specifications. The developer ported HarmonyOS onto a Xiaomi Mi 6 and even him surprised to find that OpenHarmony booted up successfully.

“As seen in the video, the Xiaomi Mi 6 runs HarmonyOS without any problems. However, this does not guarantee a good user experience. The developer has shared information indicating that the touch screen is currently not working. To confirm that the ported device can be unlocked and flashed, it has a third-party recovery similar to TWRP to facilitate flashing.

The OpenHarmony kernel is based on the standard Linux 5.10 kernel, with support for 4.19 no longer available. During installation, the device must have the kernel source code of 5.10 or higher, and the developer must confirm that the device driver source code and firmware can be obtained. Furthermore, prior to Open-source HarmonyOS, Xiaomi Mi 6 phones have supported flashing into the Windows 11 ARM system.

Xiaomi is about to turn a dozen years old, and ahead of that, company founder Lei Jun has been busy commemorating some of its most popular phones. Yesterday, a poll posted by Jun showed that Xiaomi Mi 6 has continued to be a fan favorite, beating the likes of Mi 11 Ultra and Mi 10 by a significant margin.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 was launched back in April 2016, making it exactly five years old now, but has amassed a cult following over the years. It was the first flagship phone from Xiaomi with a dual rear camera setup but was also the last to have a 16:9 display with thick bezels on the top and bottom, making it a very memorable design. Its successor — the Xiaomi Mi 8 — had a kind-of bezel-less design with a notch implementation and people weren’t too fond of notches at the time.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 also had a very slim and light build and was fairly compact with its 5.15″ screen, although there was a ceramic back variant too with an increased weight.

Lei Jun had earlier revealed three of his all-time favorite models and the trio also included the Xiaomi Mi 6. Last year, it was officially revealed that there are still over 2 million active Mi 6 users and it’s probable that the figure hasn’t gone down much since. This explains the 21,000 votes for the phone on the poll.

Such was the love for the phone that Xiaomi was even tipped in 2020 to re-launch it in a more modern form-factor, complete with a bezel-less design. However, the project was canceled since the model never turned into reality.

Xiaomi released the Mi 6 in 2017 as its last compact flagship running Android 9.0-based MIUI 8. The device turned out to be a hugely successful phone such that there were rumors of a remake earlier this year. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun recently revealed that that the Mi 6 userbase stood at over 2.15 million 4 years after the compact flagship was released. However, despite the popularity, Xiaomi ended support for a new MIUI version update after the device received MIUI 11. Although the MIUI 12 beta update was officially pushed to the Mi 6, it never did receive the stable version.

In a surprising twist, though, the Mi 6 flagship has now gotten a fresh update to MIUI 13 but it is an unofficial ROM. A Weibo user @Amktiao announced the update which he dubbed Mi 6 MIUI 13 experience version. Since it is an unofficial installation package, a third-party REC (ie TWRP) is required to flash the device. Users will need to back up their data before trying this out.

At present, the Mi 6 MIUI 13 experience version created by @Amktiao has been updated to the third version, which fixes many bugs such as frame drop, earpiece, fingerprint recognition, and so on. Thus, if you plan to try this out, you have some level of guarantee that it isn’t infested with bugs.

As a reminder, the Xiaomi Mi 6 is equipped with the world’s first 10nm chip which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with a clock speed of up to 2.45GHz. With the powerful performance of Snapdragon 835, all Mi 6 series come standard with 6GB LPDDR4x RAM with a base 64GB storage as well as a 128GB storage option.

Xiaomi is expected to officially start rolling out the MIUI 13 update to the first batch of models from around the end of January 2022. Apart from the Xiaomi 12 series which will come pre-installed with MIUI 13, the other models getting the update first include the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, Xiaomi 11 Pro, and Xiaomi 11, Mi Pad 5 Pro 5G, Mi Pad 5 Pro, and Mi Pad 5.

Xiaomi recently launched the Mi 11 flagship smartphone as a successor to the company’s Mi 10 lineup of last year which includes several models. Now, the company has shared an interesting detail about the adaptation of Mi 10 smartphones.

As per the company, the users of the Mi 6 smartphone launched in 2017 were among the first to upgrade their devices to the Mi 10. This is an interesting share from the company as it hints at Xiaomi flaunting about the device’s lifecycle.

The company is implying that the users didn’t feel the need to upgrade their Mi 6 smartphone for about three years until the Mi 10 series launched. Within that timeframe, Xiaomi had launched Mi 8 and Mi 9 series in the market.

As for the specifications, the Xiaomi Mi 10 features a 6.67-inch Full HD+ S-AMOLED 3D display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 90Hz refresh rate, and Gorilla Glass 5 on top. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC.

The device shipped with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage but lacks support for microSD card slot. It features a 108-megapixel ultra-clear primary sensor, a 13-megapixel superwide lens, a 2-megapixel depth assist lens, and a 2-megapixel macro lens.

On the front side, there’s a 20-megapixel snapper for taking selfies. It runs the MIUI custom user interface based on Android 10 operating system and is powered by a 4,780mAh battery with Quick Charge 4+ and USB-PD 3.0 supprot.

MIUI 12 was officially unveiled earlier today along with Mi 10 Youth Editon mid-range 5G smartphone sporting a periscope camera. After the event, the company also announced the update schedule in a post on Mi Community China. Unfortunately, the post also mentions some bad news suggesting MIUI 12 could be the last update for five popular devices from the company.

Xiaomi stopped releasing MIUI Global Beta builds from last year, however, it continued to provide beta builds for MIUI China ROM. Whenever the company drops support for beta builds for a device, it is likely to not receive the next iteration of MIUI thereafter.

In the post where the company listed the eligible devices for MIUI 12, it also noted the end of beta builds for five devices listed below from June 20, 2020. 

• Xiaomi Mi 6
• Xiaomi Mi 6X
• Xiaomi Mi Note 3
• Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
• Redmi Note 5

MIUI 12 could be the last update for the above-listed devices. They may not receive MIUI 13 update whose ‘Feature Design Survey’ is already live on Mi Community China.

Once the development of MIUI China Beta ROMs for these devices will be ended, they will be receiving MIUI 12 Stable build as per the update schedule/timeline provided by the company. Additionally, they might receive one or two maintenance updates after that to fix bugs. And that could be the end of official software support for these handsets unless Xiaomi changes its mind.

It is worth noting that Mi 6 is yet to be decided by the company to get a stable update. Also, the Redmi Note 5 mentioned here is the Chinese variant, which is popular as Redmi Note 5 Pro in India.

Although these smartphones may not receive update from the company in the near future, they are expected to remain up to date for a few more years as almost all of them are still popular in the Android modding community.

When Xiaomi revealed the official list of eligible devices for MIUI 12 update, it lacked Mi 6 flagship smartphone from 2017 but included Mi 6X, it’s lite variant. This was a head-turner for the user community as this device is still powerful enough to last for at least two more years. Thankfully, Liu Ming, the product manager of MUI has now confirmed the handset to receive the update.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 was launched in April 2017 with MIUI 8 based on Android Nougat. The device was later updated to MIUI 9, MIUI 10, and MIUI 11. Additionally, the system underneath was also upgraded to Android Oreo and Android Pie.

As far as any standard Android flagship smartphone is concerned, it is more likely to receive two platform updates and three years of security patches. In Mi 6’s case, it has already received support for 3 years and should not receive any update further if it has to follow the above tradition.

However, Xiaomi’s update tradition is different than other OEMs as it is known for supporting devices for up to 6 years. But sadly, the company has been changing as certain new MIUI features cannot work on old Android base and its a tiring job to update the platform versions of older devices.

On the other hand, phones released in the past few years are more capable than those launched before that. So, it was confusing why Xiaomi did not include Mi 6 for MIUI 12 update when Mi 6X was eligible for it.

At that moment, the MIUI Head took it to his Weibo to remind users that MIUI 12 Beta is indeed available for Mi 6. When we looked a look at the Mi Community post, we came to know that the company is yet to decide on providing a stable update to the device and thus it was not included in the official eligible list.

If Mi 6X is getting a stable MIUI 12 update, then Mi 6 will most certainly receive it. But for now, it is only guaranteed to get beta builds until the brand officially adds it to the official list of eligible devices, which we believe will happen soon going by the history of the company.

In terms of percentage spread, Apple smartphones accounted for 29.54% of the fake phones recorded while Samsung accounted for 26.44%. Xiaomi accounted for 9.83% and Honor accounted for 6.10%.

A few things that are common with the cloned smartphones is the presence of a 720p display resolution, as well as MediaTek MT6589 processor bundled with a Mali-400 MP GPU onboard. Although the components are not necessarily fake, they are starkly different from what the OEM included in the original version. Interestingly, China’s tech hubs of  Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Beijing ranked among the top three cities where most of the fake smartphones are used in China.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 is finally getting a stable MIUI 11 update, but it’s different from the MIUI 11 that the other Xiaomi devices are getting. While all the other devices getting the beta update are being updated to Android 10, the Mi 6 will unfortunately be stuck with stable MIUI 11.0.2.0 based on Android 9 Pie, though it still retains all the features of the new UI.

The phone got an update to Android Oreo last year and also got Xiaomi’s own MIUI 10 update but there were no plans to update it to Android Pie when Xiaomi released the list of devices getting Pie back in October 2018. It eventually got Android Pie beta in April (global version in June), but that was confirmed to be the last major OS update for the device.

While it is a bit disheartening, it’s still great to see the Mi 6 getting MIUI 11. It’s a big update that changes up a lot of things for the popular Android skin. Starting with the visual aspects, you get slightly softer icons, a system-wide dark mode, new Mi Lan Pro system font and improved always-on display functionality. There are also new animations, themes, wallpapers and improved notification system.

Xiaomi has confirmed the list of smartphones that will be treated with Android 9 Pie OS update. Before rolling out the stable update to as many as 10 smartphones, the Chinese manufacturer will be releasing the global beta edition of the update. Among them two are scheduled to receive the beta version by the end of this month. Five more will be getting it in the next quarter and there is no timeline decided for the remaining three phones.

The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Y2 (known as Redmi S2 in China) are scheduled to be treated with Android 9 Pie beta edition within this quarter. In the second quarter, it will be coming to handsets like Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Mi Note 3.

The Android 9 Pie global beta update status for Redmi Note 6 Pro, Mi 6X and Mi 9 Explorer Edition is still in development stage. For Chinese audience, the update will include MIUI China ROM whereas the global users will be provided with MIUI Global ROM. Once the beta edition is available, the company will announce its arrival through its forums and app.

The aforementioned list had surfaced on the official MIUI forums site. An administrator on the discussion board claimed the that the list is incomplete. He stated that once existing devices are provided with Oreo update, the list will be updated with newer phones that can be upgraded to Android 9 Pie OS.

Xiaomi has always come out with impressive products that cut across the smartphone category as well as other smart home products. However, if you still intend to use the original glass panel again, it is best done by an expert. Tools used for dismantling phones such as the suction cup, prying tool and glue will be needed. After the replacement, the translucent glass panel doesn’t look so bad but it’s not as beautiful as the Mi 8 Explorer. That because what we see is the original internAls of the Mi 6. Just over four months after the MIUI 10 Custom ROM was announced in China, Xiaomi has commenced the roll out of MIUI 10 Stable ROM on the Mi 6 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Redmi Note 5 Pro is India’s own version of the Redmi Note 5 that was announced earlier this year. The disclosure of commencement of MIUI 10 Global stable on the Redmi Note 5 Pro was made by Xiaomi India’s head, Manu Jain via Twitter. While that of XIaomi’s 2017 flagship Mi 6 was announced on the MIUI forum.

The new Custom ROM is available for download from Mi India website. On the other hand, the Mi 6 will get its own update via OTA push. The new ROM will also be available for download on the MIUI forum.

Xiaomi first announced the new MIUI 10 Custom ROM during the Mi 8 launch conference held on May 31. In essence, the new ROM comes pre-installed on the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE and Mi 8 Explorer edition. Since then, the new Custom ROM has been rolled out to a number of eligible Xiaomi models but the ROM in question is the beta ROM. The first batch of beta ROM was released on June 19 and since then three batches have been released covering a total of 37 Xiaomi models. The Global beta was also made available recently for up to twenty different models.

Xiaomi has now started the rollout of the MIUI 10 China stable ROM and the 2017 flagship Mi 6 is the first to receive the OTA upgrade. The new upgrade includes Google August 1 security patch and the entire update package is about 589MB. Users of the Xiaomi Mi 6 in China may not be able to access the update just yet as it is a Stable beta ROM. Thus, the OTA update is being pushed randomly to select Mi 6 users. We expect the full rollout to happen in a short while.

Xiaomi has released the 367th-week update for its MIUI custom ROM and among other things, the update adds facial unlock to two Xiaomi models. According to reports, the Xiaomi Mi 6 and Mi Mix 2 has now got face unlock feature as a result of the update.

Xiaomi had rolled out Android 8.0 Oreo beta update for Mi 6 users in the previous month. Today, the company has rolled out the latest MIUI 9.2.3 Global Stable ROM that brings along the Android 8.0 Oreo OS. The update can be installed through OTA update as well as by manually installing the ROM. The Chinese manufacturer has also released the kernel source code to the public.

Xiaomi has confirmed on the arrival of the MIUI 9.2.3 flavored Oreo update for Mi 6 through an official announcement on MUI Official Forum. By this, it becomes the first Xiaomi phone to be blessed with Oreo update.

As of this writing, Xiaomi has not confirmed on the other phones that will be getting the MIUI 9.2.3 update. However, it is speculated that the Mi MIX 2 smartphone may receive it in the near future. The upcoming Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and Xiaomi Mi 7 flagship phones are rumored to come pre-installed with Android 8.0 Oreo OS.

Compared to other smartphone OEMs, Xiaomi is usually slow at releasing kernel source codes for its smartphones. It has recently released Android Nougat based kernel source codes for Mi A1 and Redmi 4X. Now that the Oreo kernel source code has been released for Mi 6, developers will soon release custom software builds for it.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 was launched with MIUI 8 based Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It features 5.15-inch FHD display. It is powered by Snapdragon 835. It comes in 64 GB and 128 GB storage options and 4 GB and 6 GB RAM options. It includes 12-megapixel camera sensors on its rear whereas its frontside is flanked with 8-megapixel selfie camera. The Xiaomi Mi 7 flagship phone is expected to get unveiled in the first quarter of 2018. Fresh information suggests that the Mi 7’s dual rear cameras will be equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) for stellar photography experience.

During the ongoing World Internet Conference in China, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had claimed that the company will be focusing on AI in 2018. It was reported about a week ago that Xiaomi has started recruiting Closed Beta testers for Android Oreo update based on MIUI 9 but there wasn’t any official confirmation for that news. Xiaomi has officially announced the commencement of Android Oreo Closed Beta program for the Xiaomi Mi 6 only. The tech giant has listed the requirements for applying for the Closed Beta. Of course, it is meant for the Mi 6, so you must own one.

This is good news is that the commencement of the Closed Beta is an indication that Android 8.0 will soon be available for Xiaomi models. After the Closed Beta program,  an Open Beta program will commence and thereafter MIUI 9 Development ROM based on Android Oreo will roll out for Xiaomi Mi 6 models. The statement also disclosed that the MIUI team have been working on adapting Android Oreo for Xiaomi models since after the announcement of the ROM in August.

Earlier this year, in April, Xiaomi launched Mi 6 smartphone in two variants — 6GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. Now, the company has launched another variant of the smartphone which comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

Last month, this toned-down model of the Mi 6 was spotted online and was reported to be a special edition for China’s Annual Singles’ Day sale on November 11.

The new 4GB RAM variant of the Mi 6 smartphone is priced at 2,299 Yuan — about 200 Yuan cheaper than the standard 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model priced at 2,499 Yuan. The smartphone will be available for purchase from November 11th later this week.

Apart from the memory, all the remaining specifications of the smartphone remains unchanged. It flaunts a 5.15-inch Full HD display with screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor, with 6GB of RAM. The phone was available in two different models, based on the internal storage — 64GB and 128GB.

The smartphone comes with a dual camera setup at the back, featuring a 12-megapixel 1.25μm wide-angle sensor with a f/1.8 aperture, 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization and 6-P lens and the second sensor of 12-megapixel 1.0μm telephoto lens with a f/2.6 aperture, phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and a focus range of 52mm. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel camera that records 1080p videos at 30fps.

Xiaomi is speculated to debut the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones in this week. Also, the company may unveil the Redmi Note 5 smartphone in the next month. Apart from these phones, it is also rumored to be working on a full screen edition of the Xiaomi Mi 6 flagship phone.

Other reports claim that it may be mid-range chipset like the Snapdragon 652 since it is speculated to be built with 16nm manufacturing processor. It is rumored to feature four cores of Cortex A73 clocking at 2.2 GHz and four cores of Cortex A53 working at 1.8 GHz.

Fresh information suggests that this phone would be debuting with a full screen design. It is expected to arrive with 5.65-inch display that will be delivering an aspect ratio of 18:9. The smartphone may either launch as Mi 6C or Mi 6X.

The rest of the specs of the alleged Mi 6C phone is expected to be same as Mi 6. Hence, the upcoming full screen version of the Mi 6 is speculated to arrive with a pair of 12-megapixel camera sensors on its back panel.

The Kirin 970 chipset is an 10nm chipset that is integrated with an exclusive Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for handling AI capabilities. The AnTuTu benchmarks of Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro that have surfaced recently indicate that the performance of the Kirin 970 is on par with Snapdragon 835.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro AnTuTu Benchmarks

The above image seems to show the AnTuTu benchmarks score of a Huawei phone with a model number of BLA-L29. The same model has been spotted with 6 GB of RAM multiples times on Geekbench over the past week. The BLA-L29 is the Mate 10 Pro and it has recorded an impressive score of 173,757 on AnTuTu.

The Mate 10 Pro has a 6-inch FHD+ OLED screen that offers an aspect ratio of 18:9. It includes 128 GB of storage. It has a 20-megapixel + 12-megapixel Leica certified dual rear cameras and is fueled by a 4,000mAh battery.

Huawei Mate 10 AnTuTu Benchmarks

The above image seems to belong to the regular Mate 10 as the model number of ALP-AL00 has appeared with 4 GB of RAM on the benchmarking site numerous times in the recent past. On AnTuTu, it has managed to score even higher with 176,174 points. Also, the listing shown in the above image seems to be authentic as the official AnTuTu site has the same listing sans the scores of Mate 10.

The Mate 10 has a 5.9-inch LCD screen that supports QHD resolution. It also features the same dual camera system and 4,000mAh battery that is available on the Mate 10 Pro.

Coming to the AnTuTu benchmarks, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro have managed to list among the top 7 best performing smartphones. The Apple A11 Bionic chipset powered iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 are respectively leading AnTuTu benchmarks with respective scores of 212,728 and 205,386. The Snapdragon 835 powered OnePlus 5 and ZTE Nubia Z17 that have respectively scored 181,410 and 177,770 are ranking ahead of Mate 10.

The Mate 10 Pro is not present in the above list, but its score of 173,757 should land it behind HTC U11 that has a score of 175,970. The Mate 10 and 10 Pro are also ahead of SD 835 powered Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ on AnTuTu

The above ranking shows that the Kirin 970 powered Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are scoring similar benchmark scores as Snapdragon 835 on AnTuTu. This indicates that Huawei has managed to create a beasty chipset that can rival with Snapdragon 835.

An industry insider has revealed on Weibo that the Snapdragon 845 chipset would be powering the Mi 7 flagship phone. And it will be featuring a 6-inch OLED display from Samsung. As far as Xiaomi Mi 7 release date is concerned, it may get unveiled in the first quarter of the coming year. Like the Mi 6, the Xiaomi Mi 5 had gone on sale in April 2015. However, the Mi 7 may arrive between January and March 2018. Some of the other 2018 flagships like Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG G7 are also rumored to debut earlier in 2018.

As mentioned above the Mi 7 may come with a huge display. Going by the current trend, it may feature a full-screen display which means that there won’t be enough space for a frontal home button that is embedded with a fingerprint reader. It may feature an in-screen fingerprint sensor. However, since it is expected to launch earlier in 2018, it may not feature an in-screen fingerprint reader.

Xiaomi Mi 5X was announced back in July to cater the needs of a cheaper dual camera smartphone in the market. The idea behind the smartphone was simple, use a similar dual camera setup as the Xiaomi Mi 6 flagship and put it inside a mid-ranger, with decent specs. So, the Mi 5X (full specs here) isn’t as powerful as the Mi 6, but its camera is still quite capable, thanks to the sensors inside. The cheaper price also makes it available to a much wider crowd with a limited budget.

On first glance, the dual camera setups on both the phones seem identical. But the setup is much more different than what you may realize, as the sensors inside the Mi 5X are not from Sony or Samsung, instead they are from OmniVision (OV). The basic specs remain the same, like one 12MP sensor with 1.25µm pixel size and another one with 12MP 1.0µm pixel size. But the sensor manufacturer, as well as the apertures, are different than what’s used inside the Mi 6.

The Mi 5X’s primary OV12A10 comes with a slightly larger 1/2.8″ sensor as compared to IMX386 (1/2.9″). The aperture on the Mi 6 is bigger though, f/1.8 vs f/2.2.

When it comes to the real life performance of both the handsets, it’s quite similar. But there are a few differences seen in these samples as well. For example, on most occasions, the Xiaomi Mi 6 had much sharper images. It was even more evident when you zoom into the pictures. But interestingly, the Mi 5X managed to take brighter images.

In terms of color saturation, the Mi 5X seems to be better. However, sometimes, the pictures look over saturated, different from what it looks in real life. So, if you are someone who likes images which are closer to reality, the Mi 6 is a better option.

Portrait mode is better on the Mi 6 as the object tracking on the Mi 5X is not as good as its elder sibling. The colors on the portraits are much more natural, unlike the Mi 5X which captures somewhat whitish images (kind of what we see in beauty mode).

Low light images are much sharper with the Mi 6. The f/1.8 aperture lets in more light and therefore we get more details as well. However, once again, the Mi 5X tends to take brighter images, although they are not as sharp as the Mi 6.

To conclude, the Xiaomi Mi 6 does well in this comparison but so does the Mi 5X. Despite being almost $150 cheaper, the Mi 5X manages to keep up with Xiaomi Mi 6’s camera on most occasions. It won’t be as sharp as the flagship model, but it’s capable of capturing high-quality images, making it one of the top camera phones in its price segment.

Xiaomi doesn’t officially sell its products in Japan but somehow, the products find their way into Japan just the same way they do enter other markets where Xiaomi is yet to officially launch. In this same manner, a set of pictures of the Xiaomi Mi 6 Ceramic Edition being sold in Japan has surfaced on the internet. Not that selling we have an issue with Xiaomi products being sold in Japan but often times they usually come with an astronomically high price tag, at least the ones we have seen. In this case, the Mi 6 Ceramic Edition carries a price tag of 64,800 Yen which is equivalent to 3918 Yuan (~$587) at the current exchange rate.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 Ceramic version is the top-most model in the Mi 6 range. Apart from coming with a ceramic glass body, it is available in 6GB RAM + 128GB storage version only. The device also has a 18K gold-plated camera ring which adds to the already beautiful design, coupled with the powerful Snapdragon 835 processor as well as a dual-lens camera at the rear it features. Despite all these features, it comes with a 2999 Yuan (~$435) price tag which means it sells for over 1000 yuan higher in Japan.

Earlier this year, the Mi Mix was found in a second-hand store in Tokyo that specializes in the importation of devices, with the 6GB RAM variant selling for 109,800 Yen, roughly ¥6700 ($974). That was way above the official retail price of 3999 Yuan (~$581) for the 6GB+256GB. Also, about three months back, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Hatsune Miku Edition was discovered in a retail shop in Japan with a price tag of  49,800 Yen which is about 3,066 Yuan. while the device launched with a 1,299 Yuan ($189) price tag. Even online retailers ships Xiaomi product overseas at costs that are sometimes way higher than their official prices in China.

All these, perhaps, underscores the importance for Xiaomi to diversify its sales dragnet outside China and other regions where it presently sells its products officially. Qualcomm announced its latest Snapdragon 835 chipset earlier this year and the flagship processor made its debut on the Samsung Galaxy S8 in April and the Xiaomi Mi 6, Nubia Z17, OnePlus 5 and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. The SD 835 chip is built on the 10nm process and is said to be 27% better in performance when compared to the Snapdragon 820 chip. Also, it uses about 40% lesser power, so the new processor is better with performance and battery usage. Despite these and many more features, the SD 835 chip is yet to be featured in so many flagship models even as the smartphone releases for the year is reaching its peak. 

Industry analyst, Pan Jiutang has come out to reveal why the flagship chip is yet to be used on a large number of smartphones. According to the analyst, the 10nm processor is more expensive than the SD 820 and is even 3-5 times the price of the Snapdragon 600 series. From the look of things, the lack of a flurry of SD 835 smartphones isn’t due to the slow production process as was earlier thought but the cost of the processor.

By this time last year, the Snapdragon 820 processor has seen a good number of patrons but presently, among the Chinese OEMs only the Xiaomi Mi 6, Nubia Z17 and OnePlus 5 feature the processor. The Snapdragon 835 was produced by Samsung’s foundry and the cost of the Galaxy S8 wouldn’t pose any problem for Samsung to make its profit. But its profitability for Chinese manufacturers who don’t have the leverage of fixing a very high price tag on their models, using this processor may pose a problem in terms of profits, in the long run. Except Qualcomm drops the cost of the chip, which we don’t know presently, the processor might end up not being used on a lot of devices before the release of the next-gen SD 845 next year.

Xiaomi launched the Mi 6 flagship in April this year and the device was announced to come in four colour variants which are Black, Blue, Silver and White. While the Black, Blue and White variants have been on sale, the Xiaomi Mi 6 Silver edition has been out of circulation. But during the launch of the Mi 5X recently, Xiaomi revealed that the Silver edition was going to go up on sale on August 3. Before that happens, we came across cool hands-on photos of the Mi 6 Silver edition and here you have them.

Just in case you’re unaware, the Xiaomi Mi 6 Silver Edition is a limited edition, call it super limited edition if you like because Xiaomi did disclose also that only 100 units of the Mi 6 Silver edition will be made available on August 3. This is as a result of the fact that the production process is cumbersome, especially the electroplating process. Lei Jun put the yield at 6% due to the special electroplating process where in an entire batch can be rendered useless by a spec of dust inside the chamber.

Design wise, the Xiaomi Mi 6 Silver Edition comes with a special design which like the others is made of stainless steel frame but its own glass covering is a special ultra-reflective mirror finish. The Silver edition is said to come with a different feel from the other variants. The Silver Edition is equipped with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and would carry a lofty price tag of 3,999 Yuan (~$592), a thousand yuan higher than its black coloured contemporary. The Xiaomi Mi 6 comes with a  3350mAh battery which is one of the largest you will find in a flagship this year. For a phone with a 5.15-inch display, that should be sufficient. Nevertheless, a bigger battery is always welcome.

If you are willing to take the risk, you can triple the battery capacity of your Xiaomi Mi 6. Some sellers on Taobao are providing battery modification services.

The battery modification involves taking apart the back of the phone and replacing  the battery with a bigger one the sellers say is from “Sony” and “much better” than the one it comes with. You can choose from three different capacities. There is a 6700mAh one for ¥220 (~$33), a 7000mAh version for ¥260 (~$38), and a 9000mAh variant for ¥340 ($50).

Bear in mind that your original rear plate won’t fit anymore, though you get a custom rear shell. You will also be left with a massive battery bump.

Xiaomi Mi 6 was introduced in China on April 19 and the company had confirmed that it would be coming four colors. However, at the beginning, only the black variant of Xiaomi Mi 6 was available for purchase. The white edition of Xiaomi Mi 6 was made available on July 14 and it sold very quickly. Few weeks after its launch, its Ceramic Edition was made available briefly. The other color variants of the Mi 6 would be going on sale tomorrow in the home country of China.

The four colors like Bright Black, Bright White, Bright Blue and Ceramic Black of the Xiaomi Mi 6 will be available for buying from July 18. The above poster does not provide any information on the timing of the availability of the Mi 6 color variants. It only states that these models will be priced at 2,499 Yuan (~$369).

Since white variant was exhausted within few seconds after its launch on July 14, it seems that the other variants will be sold out quickly. Xiaomi has not given any information on the number of units of each color variants of Mi 6 that will be available for buying tomorrow.

Xiaomi Mi 6 is one of the bestselling flagship phones of 2017. It will be the first smartphone to get the MIUI 9 update. However, there has been no confirmation from Xiaomi on the arrival of these color variants of Mi 6.

Xiaomi Mi 6 is available with a screen size of 5.15 inches that supports full HD resolution. It is fueled by Snapdragon 835 and 6 GB of RAM. It comes in storage models like 64 GB and 128 GB. Recently, a Xiaomi official is credited to have hinted that the company’s next-gen custom ROM MIUI 9 would be released before August 19. A new rumour has now emerged that Xiaomi’s latest Mi 6 flagship will be the first smartphone that would be updated to MIUI 9.

This detail was revealed on MIUI Forum in a group conversation by one of the forum administrators identified as Mushroom bread. You can find the screenshot of the conversation at the end of the post. The admin revealed that MIUI engineers have been working intensively for more than a month so that the MIUI 9 will be released on time. He went further to disclose that the first batch of the custom ROM will only support the Mi 6 and thereafter, other Xiaomi models. He didn’t disclose more than these details but we expect.

MIUI forum administrator didn’t disclose more than these details but we expect the MIUI 9 to be released at the end of this month or early next month. The Xiaomi Mi 6 is barely three months old and already we have started seeing renders of the next generation Mi-series smartphone which should be the Xiaomi Mi 7. A newly released video shows us a fan’s idea of the concept design of the Mi 7, which most likely should be launched early next year. As stated, this isn’t an official render of the Mi 7 but a concept design by a third-party concept designer.

Taking a closer look at the design, the phone features a nicely designed, bezel-less display but retains the metal body covered with glass that was used in the Mi 6. The video shows a device that has a flat display instead of a curved one but there won’t bezels at all four sides. For one minute, you might think this is the MI Mix 2 render but it isn’t.

The rear design, however, shows some curvature and there is a dual camera setup, which is not surprising, considering dual cameras are the rave of the moment. The dual camera setup also has a dual-tone LED flash located on the left side of the cameras. There are capacitive keys on the right side of the phone. The concept designer gives the Mi 7 a 16MP rear sensor apiece, with both OIS and PDAF. The phone also comes with a 16MP front camera and an iris scanner located upfront.

The Xiaomi Mi 7 (if it will be called that) will most likely not feature a design similar to this one but if it does, it won’t be a bad idea. Every month, AnTuTu releases a list of the overall top 10 smartphones. There is also a list for each operating system (Android and iOS). The lists for June have been released and Android takes the lead again with the OnePlus 5.

For the month of May, the HTC U11 was the king of smartphones, however the OnePlus 5, released last month has dethroned it.

The OnePlus 5 claims the top spot with 181879 points, making it the first device to cross the 180k mark. It is followed by the ZTE’s Nubia Z17 and not the HTC U11 as it was released in June too and packs 8GB of RAM. The U11 claims the third spot.

The Galaxy S8+ comes in at number four with 171703 points while Xiaomi’s Mi 6 takes the fifth position with 170255 points. The iPhone 7 Plus is still on the list and sits at number six and the iPhone 7 is number eight on the list losing the seventh spot to Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium. The Galaxy S8 takes the ninth spot and the Snapdragon 821-powered OnePlus 3T is the tenth.

For the next few months until the new iPhone(s) release, expect to see Snapdragon 835 phones take the lead.

The top ten iOS devices sees the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro take the lead with its Apple A10X Fusion chip. The iPhone 7 Plus is second and the iPad Pro 9.7 comes in at number three.

Xiaomi has announced a Jackie Chan Limited Edition of its latest Snapdragon 835 powered flagship – Xiaomi Mi 6. The new Mi 6 Jackie Chan Limited edition is released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Jackie Chan stunt team. The initial team was first reunited after a long period in February this year and the new Edition of Xiaomi’s best smartphone yet is meant to pay tribute to a legendary martial arts actor.

The new Mi 6 edition doesn’t really come with a lot of differences from the regular version but it has a unique gift box which is designed with Jackie’s autograph at the front. The Mi 6 wasn’t unboxed for us to see if the autograph is also stamped on the back of the Mi 6 itself but a group photo of Jackie Chan and his entire stunt team has the “Shot on Mi 6” watermark. In addition, the configuration isn’t revealed but the new edition could have the same specs as the Mi 6 as well, with perhaps, a Jackie Chan themed set of wallpapers onboard.

Jackie Chan is a well-known celebrity actor popular all over the world. He was awarded an honorary Oscars for his works over the years in November last year. In the previous week, an industry insider, Kevin Wang had claimed that the 2017 second quarter result of Xiaomi appears impressive. In the first quarter of this year, Xiaomi sold 13 million smartphones and in the second quarter, the company is expected to exceed more than 20 million units.

The substantial increase in sales is not only because of the high popularity of Xiaomi Mi 6 flagship phone in the home country of China but also because of the stupendous popularity of mid-range smartphones such as Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4A and Redmi 4 in the Indian market.

Today, Kevin Wang has again claimed that the sales of Xiaomi phones in this month has been even more impressive. He has revised statement on second quarter sales. Previously, he had stated that Xiaomi may sell more than 20 million units in Q2 and his today’s Weibo post states that Xiaomi is expected to sell 23 million units in this quarter. Moreover, he has also forecasted that Xiaomi may sell 28 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2017. Here is the Weibo post:

Considering the fact that Xiaomi recorded a sale of only 13 million units in Q1, the company seems to have rebounded very well in this quarter. Xiaomi is expected to continue to impressive sales till the end of the year as it is rumored to launch couple of “start products” in the remaining half of the year. It seems that it won’t be difficult for the company to cross 80 million units sales mark by the end of 2017.

Rumors have it that Xiaomi has several smartphones lined up to release in this year. The Redmi Pro 2 is speculated as the first Snapdragon 660 chipset driven phone from the company. It is also rumored to be the cheapest smartphone with full-screen display design like Galaxy S8. Speculations also suggest that Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus may debut soon.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 and Mi MIX 2 are also some of the most awaited smartphones from the Chinese firm this year. Also, before the end of the year, Xiaomi is also pegged to announce the budget-friendly Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 smartphones in China.

This year we expected to see phones launch with fingerprint scanners embedded under the display. Sadly, no manufacturer has been able to pull it off. Samsung ended up putting the scanner at the back of the Galaxy S8 even after thinning out the front bezels. The Xiaomi Mi 6 has an ultrasonic scanner but it is not directly under the display or is it?

A new video posted on LeTV shows a Xiaomi Mi 6 that is unlocked via fingerprint by simply pressing on the display. Now that is weird considering that the Mi 6 has its scanner under the glass below the display. So how does this user unlock the phone using the fingerprint scanner and pressing on the display instead of swiping the scanner at the bottom?

The only logical explanation is that he modified the “hold down/press to unlock phone” message on the phone and replaced the message with a fingerprint icon. Some say he achieved this by installing a custom theme.

We have already seen a teardown video of the Mi 6 and we know it doesn’t have its scanner under the display. Whichever way, this is a clever trick and I’m sure he/she must have gotten some people confused.

The rumor mill had predicted that Xiaomi would be unleashing the Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus smartphone alongside the smaller Xiaomi Mi 6. However, the Chinese manufacturer only debuted the Mi 6 flagship in April. After the release of Mi 6, rumors claimed that Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus has been cancelled and the next flagship from the company would be the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 that will launch in September. Now, a leaked image showing the rear panel of the Mi 6 Plus phone has surfaced which has reignited the rumors that the larger Mi 6 would be arriving in the near future.

Industry analyst Pan Jiutang had speculated that the Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus would be launching around two months after the release of Mi 6. Jiutang had even blamed the Galaxy S8 for the postponing of the launch of Mi 6 Plus. It seems that the analyst’s prediction may come true since a leaked image of Mi 6’s rear panel has surfaced which shows a similar design that is available on Xiaomi Mi 6.

In the above image, the rear panel of Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus can be seen placed on the left side of the back panel of Xiaomi Mi 6. Both of them sport the same design and the only difference is that the Mi 6 Plus’s rear shell is bigger.

The bottom side of Mi 6 Plus’s rear shell has the Mi logo and there is no fingerprint reader available on it which indicates that it will be placed at the front. Interestingly, a leaked image of the protective case of the Xiaomi MI 6 Plus that appeared in the previous week also suggest that the device actually exists and may launch in the near future.

Previous rumors have suggested that the Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus would be coming with a 5.7-inch screen that will carry support for full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. It is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 835. It is expected to come with identical specs that are available on the smaller Mi 6. Hence, it is expected to come with 6 GB RAM, 64 GB / 128 GB storage, MIUI 8 flavored Android 7.1.1 Nougat and 12-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual rear cameras. It is rumored to come with a bigger battery of 4,500mAh capacity.

If the Xiaomi Mi 6 Plus really exist, more leaks are expected to surface in the near future.

ZTE Nubia Z17 v/s Xiaomi Mi 6

Design & Display

Talking about the design, both these phones, as expected, sport top-notch slim design that’s elegant on the eyes and feels great in the hands. Talking about the dimensions of these phones, the Z17 measures 152.6 x 72.4 x 7.6 mm whereas the Mi 6 measures145.2 x 70.5 x 7.5 mm. As you must have already noticed, both these devices are almost equally thin however, the Z17 is a meager .1 mm thicker to the Mi 6 measuring 7.6 mm. In terms of weight, the Mi 6 is slightly lighter at 168 grams to its counterpart – Z17 that weighs 173 grams.

Display:

Both the phones come with IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with Corning Gorilla Glass display, however the Nubia Z17 sports a slightly bigger screen that’s – 1080p 5.5″ screen with ~74.7% body to screen ratio and ~403 PPI pixel density. On the other hand the Mi 6 1080p 5.15″ screen with ~71.4% body to screen ratio and ~428 PPI pixel density.

Color Options:

The Mi 6 comes in four body color options namely Black, Blue, White, and Ceramic Black; whereas the Z17 comes in five color options to choose from i.e. Obsidian Black, Solar Gold, Black Gold, Flame Red, & Aurora Blue. Also, as we had reported earlier,  Xiaomi has axed the 3.5 mm audio jack in the Mi 6, and now ZTE has decided to go with the same decision as well.

Winner: It’s a tie between both these devices considering both the companies have chosen their own design language which is appealing to its own set of users.

Hardware Specifications

Processor & Storage:

Both, the Z17 and Mi 6 are powered by Qualcomm’s newest and fastest Snapdragon 835 processor and interestingly enough, these are the only two devices to come out of China that are powered by this chipset. It has octa-core chipset which includes four 2.35 GHz Kryo & another four 1.9 GHz Kryo processors coupled with Adreno 540 GPU.

Coming to the storage and RAM in these devices, the Z17 comes in two variants i.e. 64/128 GB ROM + 6 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM + 8 GB RAM. It is important to note that the Z17 is among only a handful devices to feature 8 GB RAM on board. It makes the Z17 a powerhouse in terms of processing speed and capabilities. On the other hand, Mi 6 comes with 64/128 GB of internal storage option with 6 GB RAM.

Both these devices do not support storage expansion slots so it’s important for you to decide which variant to go for depending on your future storage needs.

Battery:

Despite having a larger 5.5″ screen and increased RAM on the Z17, it has a slightly smaller battery of 3200 mAh whereas the Mi 6 comes with a 3350 mAh non-removable battery. So if you are someone who’s a power user and remain on the go most of the time, we would recommend you the Mi 6 over the Z17.

Winner:

After reading the above paragraphs, it would be obvious to most of you that if you’re a power user but can manage with the slightly smaller battery then you should be undoubtedly going for the ZTE’s flagship of the year.

Camera

Another important yet overlooked aspect for all the smartphone buyer is the Camera capability. Thankfully, both of these phones come with dual-lens. The Z17 has a 12 MP lens with f/1.8 and another 23 MP lens with f/2.0 and face detection, auto-focus, 2x optical zoom feature. On the other hand, both the lens for the primary rear camera on the Mi 6 is loaded with 12 MP lens with f/1.8, and f/2.6 aperture. Needless to mention, both these smartphone cameras have the common features namely geo-tagging pics, touch focus, face detection, click on smile, and so on.

For snapping selfies, the Z17 has a 16 MP lens while its counterpart Mi 6 has only a 8 MP sensor.

Being the flagship devices of their respective brands, both, the Nubia Z17 and Mi 6 comes with most of the features seen on high-end smartphones these days including support for 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, a fingerprint sensor, etc.

In terms of OS, both of them are loaded with Android’s latest Nougat v7.1.1 operating system out of the box with the brand’s proprietary UI on top of it namely Nubia UI 5.0 in the Z17 and MIUI 8.0 in the Mi 6.

Both the phones have been launched in the Chinese market already and the 64 GB and 128 GB versions of Mi 6 are priced at 2,499 Yuan (about $367) and 2,899 Yuan (about $425) in China. Xiaomi‘s Mi series is the company’s flagship models which usually come with one upgrade on the other. Right from time, Xiaomi has always improved on the series’ cameras right from the Mi 2 to the dual camera packing Mi 6. The Mi 6 isn’t the first dual camera phone manufactured by Xiaomi. It is, in fact, the company’s third dual camera smartphone but the phone has turned out to be the Xiaomi’s best dual camera flagship till date.

The Xiaomi Mi 2 was released in 2012 with a 4.3-inch display. Despte the size, the device featured an 8MP camera with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus, 27mm wide angle, back-illuminated CMOS and LED flash. The camera also features Geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, HDR and can shoot Full HD video 1080p@30fps. The Mi 2 also packs a smallish 2MP selfie camera  which can also capture 1080p videos at 30fps.

The Xiaomi Mi 3 quickly followed the Mi 2 and was introduced in 2013. The Mi 3 came with a more powerful 13MP ExmorRS main camera with f/2.2 aperture, 28mm wide angle, autofocus, dual-tone LED flash.  The camera also comes with features such as Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, HDR, Full HD video capture at 30fps. Xiaomi touted the Mi 3 camera as the first domestic mobile phone to support RAW format. The secondary camera is still a 2MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture which seems to suggest Xiaomi was focusing on the main camera during these years.

Xiaomi Mi 4 was announced in 2014, taking the rein over from the Mi 3. The sleek device is said to be the first Mi phone to feature real-time HDR and also touch focus. The Mi 4 packs a 13MP camera but with a smaller f/1.8 aperture. The Mi 4 also saw a huge leap from 2MP selfie camera to an 8MP selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture, signalling a shift towards better selfie cameras.

Xiaomi took things to another plane on the Mi 5 which feature a four-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) found in professional cameras. The Mi 5 camera is a powerful 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash which the rear camera was reduced to a 4MP sensor for whatever reason best known to Xiaomi. The company spent two years before releasing the Mi 5 in 2016 and it was worth the wait.

Xiaomi released the Mi 5S also in 2015 and it also had some improvements in its cameras. The main camera is a powerful Sony IMX378 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The Mi 5s also features a 4MP camera. The Mi 5S Plus was aso released with dual 13MP cameras at the rear and a similar 4MP sensor at the front.

Now, with the Xiaomi Mi 6 which also has a dual camera setup, the company have taken things to another level, using a similar setup as the iPhone 7 Plus, a 12MP wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephone lens. The two rear cameras on the Redmi Pro were far from impressive but the setup on the Mi 5S Plus turned out to be quite good. The two cameras at the back managed to capture good-looking images especially in broad daylight, but the real difference due to the dual cameras was seen in the low light images. The stereo mode helped take pretty good low light shots, better than previous generations. Indee, with the Mi 6, you get two times lossless zoom and also better shooting.

The Redmi Note 4X Jingdong Special Edition was recently added to the family with a slightly reduced price and a lower 3GB + 16GB memory. Apart from the reduced memory version, the Redmi Note 4X Jingdong Special Edition features exactly the same design as the normal version which was released last year. The price tag may likely be the reason why it sold more.

Surprisingly, the Xiaomi Mi 6 is the second highest selling product in Xiaomi’s lineup and this can only be explained by the assumption that there was enough stock of the flagship Mi 6 for the sales. Other products like the super cheap but classy Redmi 4X and Redmi 4A also recorded successes. The Mi TV 4A 55-inch version was also on sale at a 400 Yuan discount price and its performance was impressive. The 59-inch and 65-inch models were also on sale and performed well.
